I need to share something with you

Hi All

I have only been a dobie owner for a week (Zeke came home at 8 weeks). He is such a special little guy. I've always wanted a Doberman because I've heard only wonderful things about them.

Zeke is not from a breeder but from a family that bred their pets. A friend of a friend of a friend had a litter and I just couldn't resist..... ​

I feel that by being upfront and honest with everyone I can post in confidence and not be chastised. There are other forums out there that I no longer frequent because I just did not feel comfortable enough to share this information.

P.S. Anyway you know the ages of the parents and their health history?

My only suggestions are to look into DNA testing from a lab like VetGen. The doberman is not a healthy breed so being aware of possibilities is crucial. My other suggestion is looking into pet insurance because the diseases dobies are prone to are not cheap!

I've said it before: Doberman Chat is, in my experience, a unique place in all of the internet. I don't know what it is. It's like magic, but there is very little hostility here. Not that there aren't disagreements, and I certainly have been part of some; but you don't see the needless, senseless insulting behavior that is so common on the web.

Notwithstanding, I still would not berate you for getting a Doberman from a source like you did. I do believe in the wisdom that says one should buy from proven breeders who health test and put titles on their dogs and so forth, but:

I've shared that with my first Dobe, I literally got a Minneapolis newspaper, looked in the classifieds and picked one of the less expensive ones. I was paycheck-to-paycheck like I have been most of my life. I know I was fortunate in that I wound up with a healthy animal, but I also would like to think I exercised some good judgement in that I went to meet the "breeders" at their home. They offered to meet me in a parking lot or their home and I liked the idea of going to their house and meeting the sire and dam and see their home. They were nice people and the wife was a vet tech. Their home was, compared to my means, a very nice place (frankly, they were rich compared to me). Their Dobes were family members and lived in their home, of course! So yeah, anyway, that $300 dollar Doberman was overall the best one I've had yet! Lived to 8 1/2 years old. My next one, that cost more like the typical going rate and came from respected working lines died a few months younger than that.

So, congratulations and enjoy bringing up a Doberpup!

Didn't know whether to hit funny or agree. Lol

And yes, DCF is like it's own little magical spot in the Cyber world. My boy is a mutt and most definitely would not be a welcome addition to the typical doberman forums, but here? He's accepted as one of the pack :) there's actually several of us with mixes and dogs from less than stellar beginnings. We're not picky, we just like dogs.

I feel very good about Zeke after meeting the parents, the owners, seeing how they live and how well taken care of they are. Thanks for your input:)
 
Awwwwwww as long as the parents are health tested and he’s is healthy I wouldn’t be bothered at all by that ! I don’t think just cuz they aren’t a big named kennel doesn’t mean they weren’t responsible:)
Some of most unhealthy Dobermans come out of big name kennels. Erebus has certainly not been on the up and up and I’m glad she is exposed.
Can’t wait to see pics of him :)
 
Welcome to DCF! The most wonderful group of dog lovers and just good people overall. I have a Doberman GSD mix who I picked up at a gas station as a four week old pup in the middle of nowhere Georgia. I bought my now ten year old pit bull at the age of 19, I found her because I went to a local shelter to adopt a pit bull but they wouldn’t adopt to me because I didn’t live in the county, and they required home visits for adopting pit types and would not come out to my house! So I went to the nearest Walmart and bought a newspaper, I saw an ad for ADBA registered chocolate and white APBT pups. She’s been the best dog I’ve ever had.

Then my most recent puppy who is now five months is a full blood GSD. My boyfriend surprised me, he pulled into the breeders drive way where we were greeted by the dam and sire. I had NO idea what he had planned, and to say the least I was super excited! He is AKC eligible but since I have no plans on breeding we paid a pet price of $200. She originally wanted $700 but apparently was going through a divorce, life changes and with four pups left she wanted/needed to move them. They were also almost ten weeks so getting past the “puppy puppy” stage.
