How much protein is too much for an 8 week dobbie

Hi everyone,

So I’m finally about to transition out of the Eukanuba small breed food the breeder was giving the pup. I’ve fed him the same food for about two weeks in, and I’d like to get him into a better option. My choices are suggested on the forum, but I am finding that most of them have over 28% crude protein. The Eukanuba has 32% crude protein and 21% fat, I’m finding lots of members suggesting to be below 28% crude protein and about 10-12% fat.

Dry options are,

1) Nature’s Logic.
2) The Honest Kitchen
3) Fromm
4) Orijin

the issue is some of these have peas and or potatoes, and most are above 28% protein, and the recipes that aren’t, have high fat.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is ONE that is going to be everything you need/want. You have done lots of studying and now you'll have to find what works for you and that cute puppy. Some of us have gone through trial & error (we like the ingredients but the pup doesn't like it or it causes allergies or soupy poops etc etc) Get smaller bags to begin your change so if things go south you won't have a lot invested. Another reputable place to look up ingredients is Dog Food Advisor website. Non-biased & will send you emails if there are any recalls in the pet-food world.

Thanks for the advise, definitely makes a lot of sense. Sounds like
I’ll have to find one under 28% protein, transition into, and trial and error after.
Also appreciate the link, I’ll check it out!

Oh my, those eyes! Wow what a color! Capture all the pics before it changes! It's tough to find a good kibble that meets all the criteria, but I agree with Raven's advice, gotta try a few before going with one. I thought I saw somewhere you were confused by the raw feeding, try premade raw. They balance it all out for you - no thinking involved.

He sure has a pretty color to him.

I think you will find varying opinions on the protein%.

It does seem that the majority of kibble that I researched and really liked had a protein% higher than 30. I would try it anyway and it would be okay at first but would up causing mine to have cow patty poop.

I found that Fromm and Victor purple are a couple that fair real well with mine.

Fromm Gold (black bag) has been awesome with my boy. He has been eating it since I got him as a pup. Now at two years old I mix it with a higher protein food but he never had issues with Fromm.

Haha thank you! Yes they grow so fast!
I agree about the pre made raw, but I’ve seen very expensive options and trying to keep the budget between 100-150 a month. Some of these companies will get into the 300+ for pre made raw once he is a grown boy. So I may stick to Fromms, Nature’s logic, or the Honest kitchen for now until I can figure out the homemade raw situation with all the supplements to make sure he has the right phosphorus/calcium ratio. Thanks for your input!

Thank you! Fromm is definitely a contender, I continue to hear great things about them, even from the local holistic pet store I visited. @strykerdobe has been extremely kind and helpful and has provided lots of information to help me make a decision, thanks again Jim! He suggested reading info from the Great Dane lady, and she has very good blogs and charts showing you great holistic food options, and she also sells the supplements. While this may sound like a lot of work, I am actually having more trouble keeping him from biting everything under the sun dobershark madness stage is by far the hardest. Thanks again everyone for all the input and advise, much appreciated!
