i am an absolute wreck. I had to leave boomer with a friend due to an emergency back east and when boomer pulled out his post, our friend went against our wishes and took him to a vet to get it re-posted. a vet we have never taken boomer too. I unwrapped his ears and this is the result. there is a chunk out of his ear on the side that wasn't even cropped! please help I don't know what to do I feel absolutely horrible and can't stop crying. I feel terrible that it hurt him. image.webp image.webp

No not yet I literally just picked him up and took off the tape. they put tight athletic tape right on his ear. I feel like I'm going to be sick.

I would be too!! I hate that so many vets know next to nothing about after care of a crop. I don't want to give any type of advice since I don't know anything about crops, but I'm sure someone will chime in soon!

Wow they must have wrapped it way too tight and I don't blame you for being upset. On the brighter side, it won't be as noticeable after the hair fills back in. I would definitely show those pics to the vet.

If you're still posting, be sure not to wrap over that area so it can breathe and heal.

Yes, they definitely wrapped too tight. I'm taking him to see our vet in the morning but she doesn't have much dobe experience so I don't know how helpful it will be.

Do you suggest putting any sort of ointment on the wound to care for it? and anything to clean it? I have a micellar solution that I use for the inside of his ears. I also have neosporin and Krudzapper. Thanks for your advice!

I'm not entirely sure but I'm sure @Archer could offer some suggestions. I like Vetericyn for wounds, but I'm not sure how it would work in a case like this.

I'm so sorry that happened. Cut yourself some slack though, you were just doing what you thought was best for your boy. I can understand being upset. I'd be kicking myself too. It's not your fault.

That is indeed from wrapping too tight. The wound will heal and the skin may not granulate all the way back in, so there ay still be a divot there, but like Jan said the hair will grow back around there and it won't be as noticeable.

You can put some neosporin on it, but you don't have to. It will scab over and heal. The scab may be very dark, but that is normal

I'd be calling the posting vet and giving them a piece of my mind!!

Oh man, darn it! Well, first, I would not say you hurt your dog. They are so tough! Dogs lose pieces of ear in various ways. I know of one that got it caught on a barbed wire fence. The Dobe didn't hardly notice it.

Second, I don't think that will look bad really. Most people won't even notice! You will always be aware of it, and yes it is unfortunate and maddening, but it will blend in pretty well.

Vets and vet techs need education on this!

Dang that tape must have been TIGHT. No worries it will heal, probably have a small notch, only noticed by you. ;) Just FMI how long was that ear taped up? I WOULD take the vet bill (if you take him in) to the OTHER vet and have HIM pay it. Bring photos as well.

It will heal and you'll barely notice it after time. I wonder if they used scissors to cut the tape and cut the ear instead - that's my guess.

the ear was only taped for 2 days.... it was definitely too tight and I feel that they may have cut his ear and just bandaged it back up. we are going to go
up to that vet just to show them how horrible of a job they did and now this as the result.

it's so stressful taping the ears let alone having to monitor this on top of it. but as long as he isn't in pain I'm happy!

Thank you I will definitely do that!

I would be on the phone with the bad vet immediately! Hopefully it heals well and isn't too noticeable.

My last guy had a notch at the end of his left ear. He nicked it on the corner of a glass coffee table. He wouldn't leave it alone, shook off every bandage, cone, etc... Finally after 2 vet visits I duct taped it to his head until it healed.
Sleepy.webp

Trust me that is enough for tape...when tight it turns into a knife. My baby girl had her first set of posts done by an idiot (prior to her coming to us) and they taped too tight and she has a slash on both ears near the base. Can't see it but I know it's there and I still get mad when I think about the DA who did that to my baby!
