I feel like I'm failing...

Welcome! Kindred spirit here. Lived thru divorce AND doberteens! Our Sasha is now 3 1/2. She is incredible, but once seemed posessed by demons. Folks here helped me through it all. We still use the ecollar, as @Ravenbird says. Sasha just sometimes needs a beep to remind her that all the commands are not negotiable. I wish you all the best!
Thank you for the reassurance! We are starting e-collar conditioning tonight after the hike. I've already noticed a slight difference since I made this original post, so we are getting somewhere! ❤️

Not sure how I'd get a Doberman in a tub, lol. We live in California, hose baths.
Rocky didn't like going out into the rain to do his business, I gave him the reward of a good towel down massage the princess seemed to really enjoy.
Followed by all 4 paws wiped of mud. He got to the point after the towel massage and sprint around the garage once he would just lift a paw for it, he knew it was coming.
We tried a coat with him, he hated it more than when my daughter and wife dressing him up for Halloween. And he only tolerated that for treats, so:rofl:
His brother is WONDERFUL with bath time. I point to the tub and Bruce just hops right in. Barry on the other hand, I point at it and he gets the zoomies LOL. For now, I'll be sticking with the garden hose and avoiding mud puddles as much as possible.

I had him wearing a sweater the last time we went camping as it rained the whole time and Princess Boy acted like a shaking chihuahua so he enjoyed the sweater! We will see how it goes putting a pull snow suite on him while he has the zoomies ha-ha 🤣

Be carefull what you wish for as far as Dobermans and water. They come pre-wired to be afraid of it. Once they discover how fun it is? The challenge is keeping them out of it at inappropriate times, like Thanksgiving day while visiting moms house....a pool!:gun:
No No No!!!
Notice the avatar, thats the one, lol. She learned from Golden Retrievers, pool=fun.
Rain? No problem
Puddles? no longer avoided
A creek to cross? no, it's a creak to run up and down.
On the bright side, the short clean coat dries in a fraction of the time the thick or double coat dogs do.👍

It's so funny that he HATES bath time, but if he sees a body of water he has to play around in it! Dobermans are such goofy goober's that's for sure!!

Wow…
A lot of great advice given.

Yup…smack dab in the Doberteens and he is just trying to do what he wants. Really have to double up on the obedience training and if he gets rebellious, then put a 2-3ft lease on him. Make him go everywhere you go all the while putting him through obedience commands- pocket full of kibble/treats and reward him when he is successful. May seem kind of mean or dictatorship here but you are reestablishing yourself as the leader and giver of all good things. May need to do this for hours one day and then the next day he runs free…all depends on how he is responding.

He is gonna continually test you and if you don’t put your foot down then he will backslide into rebellion and disobedience.

Be careful not to compare him to your doodle…I have always said a Doberman is not a dog but is a Doberman. They are just different- act different, demand different, think different, etc….

Read this site back and forth- lots of great stuff on here and if you are serious about Barry….you train him daily and get him right? He will become the best partner you could have ever imagined. It’s amazing what mine has become.

Good luck

Sorry I am late to the game here, but :dc: ! Welcome! I like all the advice written here.
Another thing, he will NOT let me give him a bath. He jumps in and out of the tub and fights with every available muscle he has.. any advise on how to curb that?
I don't know how folks feel about bribery for training purposes, but I will tell you what worked for a successful bath time for my late (and very large) Bernese Mountain Dog: natural peanut butter spread around 3 walls of my shower. It got him in, and as he finished licking the smear of peanut butter, it also made him turn, so it was easy access to wash both sides of him. It was like he was on his own self-propelled turntable.

But, whatever it is you find that works for him, go ahead and do that. It's said often here "train the dog in front of you". Peanut butter in trade for a peaceful bath may be more bribery than training, but if it helps and increases the peace level around a time that used to be a fight, I would do it.
