First heat with white discharge

Stromy has started her first heat cycle. Her vulva has started enlarging. We have not seen any sign of bleeding. However she is having white discharge. Of course Google is only finding puppy vagititis and pyometra when searching for the white discharge. I have called our vet waiting on a return call to see if they can get her in for testing. Has anyone dealt with pyo? Does it look like this?

Vet tech called back. The soonest they can see her is Wednesday. They said if she is not sleepy, lethargic, or acting differently they are not too worried about it. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Dogs have different discharges during heat cycle. As long as it isn’t greenish yellow and smelly I wouldn’t worry. The discharge will most likely turn clearer as she advances in her cycle with a tinge of blood. Some will bleed heavily and others barely bleed.
I would not get yourself worked up over it. Just keep an eye on her and mark dates on calendar as the discharge changes.

@Tropicalbri's thank you for replying. I truly appreciate your expertise and all the knowledge you share. I will keep an eye on her and track her cycle, and try to relax. It's been about 12 years since I had an intact female and she just discharged blood, so this other discharge is a new experience to me.

Thankfully no experience but I have educated myself because I have an intact female. Pyo usually rears its ugly head about 4-6 weeks after a season.

While pyometra can occur in young dogs it is normally seen in older dogs. The uterus goes through a lot of changes after repeated heat cycles without a pregnancy and this change in the uterine lining can contribute to the the beginning of pyometra. I don’t think this is something to worry about with her first heat and at this age.

Pyo they can have a temperature and drink lots of water.

Talk about different discharges. Our female it looked like a white string about 8in long. I thought at first it was coming out her butt. But know it was coming out of her vajayjay! I hurried up and took a photo and texted our holistic vet!!!!!! LOL

Discharges can be different especially during the first heat. What you are seeing can be normal, but can also be abnormal so best to see the Vet.

I have dealt with open Pyo. It can happen with the first heat.

I've been keeping a close eye on her, and she has been her normal self. Well, other than being twice as velcro since the heat started. Last Saturday when I spoke to the vet tech, I booked an appointment for Wednesday morning. I think Rocky is actually having a worse time than Stormy.

Looks like she is going to be needy the way Bacall use to get. But...if Bogie got too interested in her butt she put him in his place quickly.

Thank you to everyone that replied to this. Stormy had a vet check up yesterday. They did a smear and checked it under microscope, and everything looked normal for being in proestrus. Rocky is being sent to a board and train for a week or two, so he wont be tortured by Stormy.

As for Rocky, I know members on here use chlorophyll to help with the scent when females go into heat. You can do a search on here and pull up information.
