Fight against the ear cropping ban in B.C.

I live in BC. I'm fortunate, I live out in the country where people tend to be a little more realistic about 'animals'...I get teased about spoiling my pup and rarely receive any flak re: crop and dock. When I do my response is that I'm willing to discuss the issue if they can talk from experience as owners or are in the veterinary field and/or can present their position in a manner that suggests research into the procedure because...I can! This usually shuts them up, has, a couple of times, resulted in conversation and education. The mouthpieces/do-gooders...heh, I tend to shut them down fairly easily.

Ironically, I didn't care if my pup was cropped or not, now that I know what it entails and have lived through it I wouldn't have it any other way. I despise people who think they have the right to demand we all live according to their expectation. What a crap world it's becoming...when everything we do is examined by others.

Ok, 'nuff said. I'll end this by asking that we all do our part...that we fight this. I'm in!

I have one, VERY good friend, who differs on this with me. She doesn't give me any argument about the usual "Pain" or anything. She just makes it sound like I lopped off his ears and tail for fun or something. No knowledge about standard. I mean, I get the "What'd they do to your ears/tail, Buddy?" Like I'm horrible for 'removing body parts'. Ugh. It's the one thing we don't really talk about. lol Agree to disagree, I guess. But its a bit irritating. lol They have labs, so you can imagine.

Here are the links for the BC Cropping Coalition website and Facebook group. You can sign up on the website for the newsletters and/or ask to join the private Facebook page. It looks like they have a nice start on the fundraising which is good news.

Edit: I'm having trouble with the FB link - maybe because it's a private group that you have to request to join. There is a link to the FB group under the Doberman Pincher Club of America FB page:

I love that there are other c/d breeds shown there! Sometimes I wonder if people realize how many there are and how it will change everything. Breeds just won't be breeds anymore. :(

And isn't that Harlequin Dane gorgeous! Wow.

I love the photo with all the different breeds! :)

I'm also a big fan of Great Danes. I called a breeder a number of years ago and came very close to getting a black pup but decided ultimately that we weren't ready at the time due to kids sport commitments. Shortly after we brought Luna home I saw an absolutely gorgeous 3 month old puppy on the Humane Society FB page that was half Great Dane, half Newfie. She was black (as you may have noticed there is a theme here - I love black dogs! lol) and cute as a button. I was soooooooooooo tempted to run down to the Humane Society and pick her up but didn't think I could handle two 3 month old puppies on my own. I wonder about her all the time though. I'm sure they had a ton of people apply for her and she was in a good home quickly but I would have loved to adopt her. I also wonder how in the world someone ended up giving up a 3 MONTH OLD beautiful baby like that?! I have trouble coming up with a scenario where that would happen. :confused-alt:

I tried to hold my tongue with all the stuff going on about the opposition of the BC cropping ban but have been following various articles, FB postings, etc with interest. I finally had my fill of the holier than thou comments from uneducated posters and posted a comment. I think I finally couldn't hold back any longer after being approached by a woman today at the dog park with some totally passive aggressive comments about Luna's crop. Seriously I hate passive aggressive crap! If you want to be aggressive, then be aggressive so I can respond in kind! lol And no I didn't take it lying down - I did my best passive aggressive imitation back and eventually walked away with the upper hand! :D

Anyway, apparently "Dr. Dobias Natural Healting" is angry and "fired up" about about the opposition in BC and has made some inflammatory comments on his website thus inflaming the masses and the BC Cropping Coalition asked for pro-cropping comments on Dr. Dobias' FB page. After reading a few particularly offensive comments (like people who crop ears should have their own ears cropped first - I already have my ears pierced thanks!! :sour:). Here's my comment (again with my best passive aggressive imitation which does not come naturally for me since it is my nature to be openly aggressive when necessary!):

"I had a floppy ear dog that had a number of painful ear infections with abscesses that required lancing, medication, and coning. My pup really suffered each time. I actually spoke to a man at the dog park this week with a dog with floppy ears with the same chronic issues. He is considering getting his adult dogs ears cropped (not a breed that would typically be cropped) to prevent future problems. There are in fact legitimate benefits to cropping. I truly hope that none of the naysayers have circumcised their sons because that would be incredibly hypocritical (circumcision involving cutting off a piece of the body of a newborn male baby with NO ANESTHETIC, unlike ear cropping where the dog doesn't feel a thing during the procedure). If you circumcised your baby son you are hardly in a position to object to cropping/docking. It is wonderful to see people interested in protecting dogs and they should be commended for becoming involved but I would suggest that their efforts would be better spent trying to help the plight of all of those abused and homeless pups out there."

I had never really thought about this issue until a close friend of mine who has 3 GSD told me in no uncertain terms that c/d was cruel, unusual, and should be against the law. She berated my daughter (since she was the original purchaser of Katie) as someone who should not be allowed to own a dog. I was so shocked that i was almost speechless. I pointed out to her that i had worked for vets as a tech for years, and never ONCE had seen any repercussions from c/d... Is the dog in some pain right after surgery? yes, some...nothing like the pain presented after a spay, or a cat being declawed. Are there some surgeries that dont go well and result in infection? yes, there are those situations, although i can honestly say that i never saw one in the vet practice where I worked. I also pointed out to her that without a doubt the cruelest thing a dog owner can do is have unruly disobedient animal that cannot be trusted around either people or other dogs...hmmm fits the description of 2 out of 3 of her dogs. She recently moved from a several hundred acre farm in a very rural area, to a small farm in a rural neighborhood, where one person has already told her that someone will shoot her dogs if they continue with their super aggressive behavior...now she has to keep them in her fenced yard (another cruel, unusual punishment in her mind since dogs are descendents of wolves and should be allowed to roam free.) sheesh.... she is a NUT JOB, but many agree with her. I just keep on with the fact that the animal world has MUCH bigger problems than c/d.

DID YOU KNOW THAT DOCKING TAILS AND CROPPING EARS AFFECTS MORE THAN A DOG'S APPEARANCE?
POSTED BY MING-MING-LY | JANUARY, 25 2016 | 9:54AM

For hundreds of years dogs were subject to surgical procedures to alter their ear shape and shorten their tails. The fact that it still goes on today is an unfortunate truth. Not only is it cruel and unnecessary, but it also affects the dog's ability to communicate with other dogs.

Historically, ear cropping (the removal of part or all of the dog's pinnae) and tail docking (the removal of portions of an animal's tail) was performed on working dogs in order to decrease health complications, such as ear infections (although this is not medically proven). It was also performed on dogs that may need to fight, while either hunting or protecting livestock, and fighting dogs. Ears are typically an easy target for the opposing animal to grab and tear, so this minimized injuries.

Tail docking was also thought to be beneficial to the animal. It was thought to prevent rabies, strengthen the back, and increase the animal's speed. It was also used to prevent injury such as when the dog was ratting, fighting and baiting. In 17th century England, there was even a tax levied on any working dog whose tail was not docked.

In modern times, these practices still exist sometimes for sport and work, but mostly for aesthetic reasons.

Today, the process of cropping and docking is usually done with a veterinarian, with the puppy merely 7 to 12 weeks. Ear cropping uses a scalpel that removes approximately 70% of the ear pinnae (or the exterior ear). Although it is done under general anesthetic, the procedure is extremely painful after the dog wakes up, as the ear contains many nerve endings.

Docking is can be done many ways. Sometimes a breeder will use a rubber elastic or ring, and tie it tightly to the tail of a puppy, only days old. The tight band cuts off the blood circulation of the tail, causing the remaining tail to atrophy and fall off. The procedure can also be done by a veterinarian with a scalpel. Other times the tail is simply cut off with a knife or trimmers with no anesthesia, and with great pain to the dog.

Both surgeries are unnecessary and are often driven by the need to follow a breed standard and aesthetic.

happy-dog.jpg

Although the American Kennel Club say they have no breed standards that require tail docking or ear cropping, in their breed standard description of the Boxer, they note that 'an undocked tail should be severely penalized."

With pressure from breeders, most owners agree to have their dogs subject to this, or don't even have a choice in the matter, without any knowledge of the how it may affect their dogs future interactions with other dogs.

Unlike people, our canine companions cannot communicate with just their voices. Body language also plays a pivotal role in communication.

When meeting new dogs, body language is the key to a great friendship or a dog fight. A dog approaching with erect ears are shown to seem alert, which could also come off as aggressive.

Dog tails have even more communicative responsibility, especially with humans. With a dog tail alone, we can determine whether a dog is happy, afraid, aggressive, curious and tense, based completely off the movement and position of the tail.

The tail also acts for balance, and certain breeds use their tail to their advantage for swimming, running and other activities.

The practice of tail docking and ear cropping is illegal across most countries in Europe, but is still widely practiced in the United States and parts of Canada, with approximately 130,000 puppies in the United States thought to have their ears cropped each year.

So why subject our dogs to such painful and unneeded surgeries? Tradition? Fashion? A breed standard?

Next time you are given the choice, choose natural ears and tails - your future pup will thank you for it.

Did You Know that Docking Tails and Cropping Ears Affects More than a Dog's Appearance? - Three Million Dogs

For lots of info Go to Facebook BC Cropping Coalition and APPD Association For The Preservation OF Purebred Dogs

A Big Big AR NUT Case on this issue and how cruel it is Dr. Peter Dobias H*** in BC.

He says things like anyone who wants to Crop their dogs should get Cropped first! But he is Very much for Spay/Neuter. That its not cruel. He is a Dr. and he should know dogs need these hormones for growth and can lead to a lifetime of Endocrine issues.
So AR's will pick and choose issues.

Did You Know that Docking Tails and Cropping Ears Affects More than a Dog's Appearance? - Three Million Dogs

Hahahaha what a load of bull some one tried to say that it affected communication to me so I said please explain how standing ears would affect communication ? Wouldn't floppy ears be harder to read. As for the tails my dogs nub is just as easily read as a full tail. Stupid AR EXTREMIST ! I have busted every single myth they like to project as fact it's hilarious to watch them squirm. Throw out the fact that no animal ever has floppy ear and it was a human bred in deformity and they go nuts hahaha ! Then ask them if a spay and neuter is cruel, and how c/d is cruel and they can't give you an answer. If cropping and docking is not necessary then fact of the matter is neither is spaying and neutering!

Or AR's answer to the spay/neuter that it is nessesary for the betterment of unwanted dogs in shelters. So its ok those dogs go though cruel pain and suffering and a lifetime of Endocrine sickness issues.

Or be a responsible dog owner and or breeder !
Note: I'm not against spaying and neutering as long as it is done correctly and at the appropriate time, this is also a choice of the dog owner and is an elective procedure, so they shouldn't make a huge stupid fuss over c/d.

I just saw that the Province of Quebec is jumping on the bandwagon. I believe that leaves only 2 provinces in Canada (Ontario and Alberta) that permit cropping/docking.

Avis d’interdiction de l’Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec concernant les chirurgies esthétiques sur les animaux

"Effective January 1, 2017, veterinary medicine practitioners in Quebec will not be permitted to practice the following surgical acts for aesthetic or breeding reasons and will consider these practices derogatory:

* cropping and docking in the cat and the dog
* docking in bovines
* docking in horses"

ok...LOVED the demo man clip...thats where we are headed, for sure..but....while on the 'other' topic of ears, I have another :ot: observation. we have a friend in our choir who has a standard poodle,,(a MOST cool dog, I have to say) He shows his poodle in some local shows...nothing big, but LOVES the poodle pom-pom clip...Now, I am not a fan of this clip but, hey, its not my dog...here is the thing: this dog HATES being clipped...always has, probably always will. He is a very sweet natured dog, and does not get mean or aggressive, but has clearly not accepted the fact that the grooming parlor is not run by Dr. Mengele.. (hope i spelled that right, but you know who I mean) Is it cruel to have him undergo this procedure? He does give the dog some Ace, and that has gone a long way to smooth out the situation, but someone said recently that the guy should stop torturing his dog. keep in mind that this poodle lives WAY better than most of the worlds population, and has not seemed to have had any alteration of his mental status. (by the way, the groomer is excellent, and will go to any length to help with the dog)

Another person we know has a super snarky, hostile, always looking for a fight, Schnauzer . I really dislike this little canine prick. He consistenly attacks his groomer, and has been uninvited to every grooming parlor in the southeast. :machinegun: Ace helps, but hasnt helped nearly as much as it helps the poodle...that has not stopped the owner from making nasty comments about c/d, and my sweet Katie.

my observtion: there are a lot of subjective issues in petworld..I dont judge a person who clips their dog, and i dont want them to judge me,,,,,I also dont want the AKC, or any legislative body to make random judgements about how an owner wants their dog to look,,,, If they insist on outlawing c/d, then hey, lets just outlaw ANYTHING that makes a dog look different from its normal stature..Ill bet that would illicit some hysterical responses from some dog show handlers:pullhair: !!!!! , (as well as those who feel that not being able to take Fifi to get her hair and nails did, is akin to dog fashion mutilation..)

And that's how extreme it's getting. I guess we need to stop trimming their nails or doing any other necessary maintenance because they don't like it. If those idiots win, our animals are going to suffer.

It looks like those tree hugging (don't get me wrong I love trees! lol) dog lovers from B.C. should be devoting their time and energies to more important dog issues.
Ugh no kidding. C/D is cruel but this is okay?

They are just apart this social justice "movement" and blindly follow the loud mouths that preach this idiocy with nothing to back it or justify why then think it's cruel. It's just something else to :censored: about. They always say "well the vet says." For me it's like ok was this an ear vet ? Cuz I wouldn't go to my primary doctor for a dental procedure. I don't know they are pretty ridiculous and I'm getting real sick of people trying to make up my mind for me and tell me how to think and take away my choices. If I don't care how your dog looks and what your preferences are then you should have the same respect for me and my choices, don't go running your mouth at me and preaching about something you have no knowledge about. That's what drives me insane now a days everyone feels they are entitled to say something to you. I'll fire right back and they don't like it or know what to do when someone steps up.
Cropping and docking has been around for a very long time. Why is it now all of the sudden a cruel thing ? Cuz people have to much time on their hands and are bored and need to :censored: about something. Shoot enough with the first world problems. These people want to "fix" something go help a country in need and I mean really need.
