E collar recommendations

Slowly turn the ecollars up nicking her about every 2 numbers increased. Once you see her look down or can tell she just barely felt it, that is where you train. Pair that with your prong collar and correct with the prong and ecollars at the same time. Once you have trained this way for a while you can eliminate the prong collar.

I purchased a basic ecollar training video from Leerburg.com. I believe Michael Ellis also has an ecollar training video. I'm a visual person so I needed a video to make sure I was using it correctly. It covered - conditioning the dog to the collar, finding the right setting, and timing/proper correction.

Yes he has 2 videos on training the e-collar. First one is education and how to use and set it up properly. Second is more in depth for training things. Very good

We just got a cheap one from amazon and will let ya know. I wanted the educator mini but you can't go wrong trying a $29 amazon special (50% off) with 968 reviews and 4.5 stars. Granted the range is short but we have a small yard and can upgrade later too.

Make sure you put it on yourself and see what it feels like before putting it on your dog. I have all the people I train do this, my wife even wore it to see. They can be a great tool but can also become abusive so know what you are doing to your dog before dialing up the number.

We did the same thing when we got ours. I tested it on my husband LOL. I would also add... and I know it sounds weird but test your garage door opener near it. I've heard with some models remote control devices can interfere with signals and cause the ecollar to go off.

On thing I think of when considering a brand of ecollar is quality – will it ever possibly malfunction and zap my dog inappropriately? The thought of that is quite scary. Note: I've never heard of it happening, but wouldn't it suck if the thing malfunctioned and just started zapping your dog non-stop? I guess it's even more scary to think of this happening with an underground fence collar with the owner away.

I agree you get what you pay for and I would be upset if my dog was in a dangerous situation and then the collar malfunctions, whether shocking for no reason or just simply not working and leaving me without control. I need a reliable tool for what I train so don't mind spending the money on quality. Mine also have lifetime warranty.

I dunno about anyone else but I read through all negative reviews nor would I ever buy an ecollar without over 500 reviews. People generally can't wait to say when things dont work. For this reason, I couldnt find a bark collar (non-spray) that didnt have a burnt dog in it. To be honest this collar is for barking and whining, not training for us anyhow. We dont currently have plans to be off lead in an unsecured area but that can be a concern obviously and a good point to bring up. Longer range collars would be ideal if thats the plan. More likely it wouldn't work especially as a rechargeable though.

Just so there's no misunderstanding: I wasn't casting aspersions at your collar choice. I was just reminded of something I had thought about.

Thank you. I think it can be an issue with bark collars so not a bad thought. :)

That happened to us :( we had purchased a cheap bark collar of ebay and every noise, it zapped her. That got swiftly tossed in the trash! The door slammed, zap. Yelled at the kids, zap. Hubby coughed in the same room, zap. We ended up with a $60 one from petsmart and have been very happy with it so far!

Question: I was doing some poking around the Garmin, Sport Dog, and Dogtra sites, and saw that Garmin had a collar that is a training collar but also includes a "BarkLimiter." I asked a sales rep with Dogtra if they had a two-in-one and he swore that a dog would get confused if one collar was used for both bark correction and training. So he then offered up $300 worth of two different collars - one bark corrector and one training.

Is this true or are they just trying to sell more gear? It seems silly to me but what do I know!?

We teaching barking for the bark and hold and reward, then sit and be quiet, then reward. Giving them both commands and the dog will learn to cap itself to get rewarded, no bark collar needed and your dog will have less anxiety.

She's good about an alert bark at home and then calming when we do our "OKs" and put her on her mat but when we've gone camping or traveled and had to stay in a hotel, she is just constantly on alert and hearing things to bark at. It would be more for occasions like those and less in and about the house.

We are just finishing our spring break with the pups and we use a white noise machine in the hotel - its on all night and kinda loud. Worked really well but the dogs were also super tired from our hikes and adventures.
So you like your white-noise machine? We need to get one and are looking for recommendations. A battery backup would be awesome!! We are a family that is addicted to having fans on in order to sleep – a box-fan outside our daughter's door, which blocks noise in our small house. But it takes a lot of electricity, and Lord help us if the power goes out!
