DPCA membership???

Here's a statement I grabbed from one of the board members. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
James Barron statement edited.webp

So how many total members are there?

They keep talking about not letting ARA folks infiltrate as members….if a person becomes a member and does some crazy shat, is there no way to de-member them?

Can’t they come together as a governing body and vote them out secondary to conduct unbecoming to the DPCA mission and philosophy?

Right? Maybe having a "rescue" dog is a red flag? Like @Rits has said many times she didn't get her puppy because she had two dogs already and may have mentioned that they weren't purebreds?

 the first time I read this I saw it as "dis-member" them. I happen to be reading a John Sanford novel right now (cops/murder/who-dun-it) and the first murder victim was dismembered to fit into a small fridge. Oh dear. Been a long day.

My friend I mentioned previously that is me to the T that was accepted has a natural eared rescue.

I keep trying to come up with generic reasons why clearly qualified applicants were denied and nothing sticks. Have you come up with any answers? As in: what are they looking for in a new member that you and other recently denied apps are not providing? What sense does it makes that they just want to keep out any new people, especially over-the-top Dobe enthusiasts?

Nope. If you look in an earlier post about the associate membership not being approved, you can kinda make the connection. I hate to make theories but the huge lack of transparency causes that to happen. Telling an applicant how they don't qualify can help them improve their potential the next time, so they can learn from their mistake and be a better candidate. It can be anonymous, they don't need to say who voted what.

So there is a governing board over the members? How many are on the board?

Is there a President or chairman that is over the board?

How many official members are in DPCA?

The board are the only ones who can vote in members right?

Gotta figure out a way to divide and conquer those tyrannical zealots!!

There are 6 board members.
Is there a President or chairman that is over the board?
Yes but apparently if the vote isn't something like 75 - 80% approval it's in the bylaws that they can't get in whether the president or vice-president say different or not.
How many official members are in DPCA?
I'm not sure of the exact numbers but there are close to 90 pages of members listed in the resource directory.

Applicant Voting Concerns

Members,
There has been much discussion regarding the latest round of votes for new applicants. The board would like to clear up some of the concerns that have been raised regarding the latest voting.

Some people received a copy of their application with a response letter that showed portions of information on the application as blank. Michelle Kramer went through all of those applications and verified the applications given to the board were as submitted. There was merely a glitch within the response letter that left the impression the entire application was not received.

There are some applicants that did not receive the required affirmative votes who are currently serving as Chapter Club officers. One should become a DPCA member before a run for office. It is clearly outlined in the Chapter Club expectations as well as on the Chapter Club renewal form that all officers and the delegate must be a DPCA member to serve. This has been a long standing policy. Chapter Club service is not the only indicator of whether someone might get a positive vote and is not, nor should it be a guarantee.

This board takes membership very seriously. We are currently redoing our application form as well as the entire application process. The intent is to give the applicant as well as both sponsors a much greater opportunity to provide information prior to voting. It will also inform the applicant of a clear expectation of membership. With this additional information the board will be able to make a much more informed decision.

The application process should not be confused with the manner in which votes are cast by the board. The Bylaws are clear. 10 of 14 board members must vote in the affirmative for an applicant to be accepted. Each board member has their own criteria for decision making. Each board member votes in private per our Bylaws therefore we do not know how they voted nor how they came to their decision.

While we understand that not receiving enough votes for membership can be something taken personally, the intent of this process is to protect the club and the breed as a whole and to satisfy some basic expectations. Anyone is welcome to reapply. If any member or sponsor feels strongly that an applicant who did not receive enough affirmative votes be reconsidered, the bylaws are clear about the next step in bringing the applicant before the membership for a vote at the annual meeting held during the national.

This Board is open to applicants contacting us and introducing themselves. We can only vote based on the information provided to us by the applicant and the sponsors. It is not possible for board members to know everyone therefore it is up to the membership to help this process by providing additional information. All monthly applicants are posted prior to the vote. We welcome any and all comments positive or negative.

At that rate, I may as well wait the month between the nationals meeting and when I can reapply. I'd need 75% of the members to vote yes. If I can't get 10 board members to vote yes, how the hell am I going to get 75% of DPCA members to vote yes, they also don't know me LOL.

So. Disappointing. Some transparency of why I was denied would be incredibly helpful in my year of waiting. The reasons can remain anonymous. Otherwise, I'll never know what I did "wrong" to make me an ineligible candidate and the reasons can easily be hidden as personal or incredibly inaccurate

What is the point of getting sponsors if what they say isn't good enough on qualified and more than qualified candidates? It cheapens the entire process and is insulting to everyone involved.

Some nice current members were getting a petition/proposal organized to bring forward to the board. I was able to gather 7 active and long standing DPCA members to speak on my behalf and write a letter of endorsement to reconsider my membership to include in the petition. One even directly sent his to a board member and texted them about it. Last I knew that was going to be turned in on Friday. We will see what happens.

For now, I'm joining a localish all breed club that knows my character and my husbands and gladly will welcome us with open arms. Its about an hour away from us, actually there is a closer club to us but we already know a lot of the members in this club and I know they could use the help! They just ask us to attend two meetings a year and help out at their annual conformation/obedience show in the summer. :D

Wow the 2022 member resource directory only lists 6 board members but there are lots of other elected officials and I don't know if they can vote or not.

That has honestly been the most rewarding thing to me and I am a board member after a couple of years of helping as much as I can at events, whether I compete in them or not. We have a Zoom meeting every month or 2 and all new member applicants are voted on by all members present. This one isn't a specific breed club but it is just as rewarding.

They should have never processed the applicants while in the middle of this in that case.

Just kind seems really uppity and snooty to me. I would not last long in their presence for I have a very hard time masking my facial expressions with how I feel inside.

Be best to not even get involved with their charade and circus. It is a shame though because the present and future Doberman is what will suffer.

THIS is what pisses me off. they are "ONLY voting based on the info provided by the app & sponsors" yet there is nothing you or your sponsors said that indicate any problem so there are board members that look at a clean slate and say "no" ???

I'm with @Ddski5, if they are that kind of people and that kind of snooty and that kind of exclusive club, I don't have any interest in joining them. @ Rits, I hope you get in and can speak for and represent us little people who actually love & want to better the breed, not play politics and
"who's good enough". We obviously need some young whipper-snappers in there & I'm too old & cross to be of much help.

That's exactly why I renewed my membership.

Ya and my sponsors word wasn't good enough so you *secretly* also need additional members to say something. Again never stated anywhere or asked of you to provide more members to vouch for you! I would have gladly done had I KNOWN my sponsors word wasn't good enough to THEM. Where's the feedback!

From the denials I've seen, most do seem to be younger people in their 30-40s that are doing everything right with their first doberman and going above and beyond... 🤔

Besides David, I don't know why he was denied. This will probably be my last word on this unless there is an update. I'm sure this forum is being scoured right now.

WOOOW! I am straight up shocked that Ravenbird and Rits you two were denied! That is absolutely nuts to.me, you.guys both do SO MUCH with your dogs! The DPCA board seems hopelessly out of touch (and clearly not wanting to improve themselves!). I.hope good members (like Jan and obbanner) can wrest back control from these guys! Like, gilly and I could never be dpca members, but you.guys should both be shoe ins!!!

Kind words, and we thank you. Just to be clear I did not apply/get denied, but @Rits did. But with all the very very active people that recently got denied I surely would not have passed whatever scrutiny they are using. 😝

I was totally ready to drop this subject, but then by happenstance found out that Asha is eligible for a "Versatility Award" but only if the dog is owned, trained, or co-owned by a DPCA member. Because its a "team award" and if for whatever reason the human half isn't a DPCA member, evidently it doesn't matter how good your dog is. So we can work our buns off, be denied a membership and the very dedicated HOT (handler owner trainer) and the very talented dog are passed over because they cannot be a member of DPCA for unknown reasons. Again, this is not about me, or my dog, it's about the club that represents the breed, recently denying any applications for no apparent reason as well as denying applicants with excellent credentials. You current members need to ask the board what the purpose of this club truly is? What about the "really dedicated owner" who is denied membership. Or can't even apply because membership is closed and they don't come back? What good is that for promoting the breed?

OK rant over.

Yep... Ripley is eligible too. Hurts to see friends receive recognition but we don't. Hard to be happy for my friends accomplishments when we feel rejected.
