Dog Jolly Ball vs horse Jolly Ball

When I used to go to the dog park often, a guy would occasionally show up with a hard jolly ball. His dog would just push that ball all around the park with his snout having a great time. He was in his own little world.

We have a blue horse jolly and Doctor has about a hundred punctures all over it. He still plays daily with it though.

I am confused though, I thought that the horse ones are supposed to be the more durable one, by reading the posts it seems the dog ones are the harder ones?

From What I gather, the dog ones are a harder plastic. The horse ones seem more durable imho though. Mischa isn't too interested, but I have found absolutely NOTHING that Scooby couldn't destroy. Cuz balls, gone in under 5 min. Invincible snake, lasted about 2 mins. He's even got some spots chewed off the black kong. It took him 3 months to put a (small) hole in the horse jolly ball we got for Christmas! And he loves it. We often have to put it up because he won't go to the bathroom- too worried about playing with it!

This pictures reminds me so much of Buddy and his horse Jolly Ball!

He played with that thing, deflated like that, for a very long time! I think deflated was better because of how he could grab it. But, alas, one day we couldn't find it! I don't know what the hell happened to it! We rarely lose anything on this property. Sooner or later we find it! I walk the property so much! And this was so big! My only thought was that he carried it somewhere on my neighbors property in the back. They do not mow much of that area and if they do mow it, its with a huge tractor type pulling a big deck behind and I wonder if he possibly mowed it over! lol He might not have seen it in the tall weeds and that big deck could have eaten it right up. Or maybe that's why he had to get it fixed a couple of times? :P

In any event, we lost it and haven't replaced it yet. We have a couple of smaller ones and they play with them once in a while. But give them a bored moment and Kali has chewed the handle like the others have posted. :tap: Once I see that happening, it's taken away. :nono:

Hi! I am new to this page, and am posting on this thread bc I came across it on a google search. Has anyone had issues with their dogs teeth (specifically the lower k9s) being worn down? I have a German shepherd that has had significant wear on her enamel (looks like they were ground down)
I believe this ball is what’s caused it. Wanted to see if anyone else has noticed any wear on their pups teeth like this? (She had the bigger red ball that has little white flecks in it)

No I haven’t noticed any tooth wear. But I don’t let her chew on it. She just throws it and swings it around.

I've never noticed any wear on the teeth from these either. I've heard antlers and other things like that can cause it though.

Does your dog ever play with tennis balls? A lot of people don’t realize the material is really abrasive on dog’s teeth and can wear them down.

My last Doberman had one of those balls and I never noticed his teeth being worn down. I mean it's just rubber. I can't imagine it would harm their teeth.

But as I'm thinking about what you said about wearing down their teeth it kind of jogs a memory of someone here posting about that and I think it was their dog gnawing at their wire crate! Do you keep your dog in a crate? Have you noticed anything with him chewing on it?

@Oh Little Oji wasn't it your last dog that wore down their teeth? Maybe it was at a doggie daycare?
It was at a boarding facility when my wife and I went to Nashville, TN for her to interview for a job and us to check out the city.

Oji, to accompany other things that left scratches, and pee and poo, on him and caused him to partially lose his voice and lose 11 lbs. of weight, apparently was yanking on chainlink fencing and yes wore grooves in his teeth. 😥

They said they'd call me if there were any concerns. No call.

Tennis balls are known to be as abrasive as sandpaper, but not much info on jolly balls. My friends Dutch Shepherd had both as a puppy and her bottom teeth started wearing down before she was a year old. The balls were discarded except for human interaction time. The thing I saw happening with the jolly ball is the angle and bite and gripping & regripping to try to hold it. The Dutchy was never content to pick it up by the handle it was pressing it to the ground while biting over & over. Also if the ground was damp the dirt would stick to the ball and since dogs don't care she was pressing her teeth into - again - a sandpaper type surface. Despite taking these out of the picture and only playing fetch with a ball for the next 9 years (no balls left out to chew on), her teeth at 10 years are extremely worn down. There is also a genetic fault of "soft" teeth that wear excessively. I can't recall what it's called but it is a thing. My Doberman has never had a jolly ball or a tennis ball and her fetch balls are that spikey rubber or the rubber balls on a rope, yet at age 5 she no longer has points on her canines. She did a little bite work with pillows and sleeves but nothing like a working dog would do, just every now & then for fun. How old is your GSD? Has she had the Jolly ball a long time and does she bite the whole ball rather than the handle end?

Hi! I just found your post. My friend's German Shepherd had pretty significant tooth wear. One thing that dog liked to do was pick up rocks. He'd get a bit obsessive about it, and pull the rocks toward/under him (rocks like the size of a softball up to maybe football sized or a bit larger) and eventually get a bite on them. He'd even dive under water to grab rocks and bring them up.
