Doberman Ear Crop Information

Longer show crops can take well over a year to stand. That equates to reposting every five days for literally up to two years.

A medium crop can average from six months to one year.

And the plus side this is great bonding time with your puppy, after he or she gets used to the posts which takes a few weeks normally. This can all be complicated and frustrating in the beginning but it gets easier over time and actually becomes a bonding experience that is both good for you and your puppy. After just a few weeks you will normally get pretty good at posting ears and get so proud of yourself you feel like you should be offering classes LOL

Watch lots of videos on Youtube. I enjoyed this because there are many ways to post ears and the original way you were taught may not work.

Watch taping too tightly, you can literally cut off circulations and lose the entire ear!

Things I've learned:
Tape lightly and then firmly press it so it sticks.
Also don't allow the tape to get moist or wet, it basically turns into cement.
Don't allow the dogs to scratch at their ears.
Lastly, be prepared to tape up to 7 months(this was the biggest shocker for me), sometimes the ears stand but teething makes them fall.

Good luck, it's not fun but it's soooo worth it!

For many of us with long crops that number goes up to 12+ months, but we knew what we were in for going into it.

I'm quite partial to the info we have here since it seems that most people have the best results using one of the methods we have posted.

@JanS you're quite right the info. here is great! For me, I needed to view videos and multiple ones to really "understand" what I was doing. And that was after the breeder showed me and I read online.

If this helps, Prada is in the middle, she is just over a year old and I still have to post her ears on occasion. The boys are on either side both posted 6-7 months and were done.

I`m from Namibia, and I think it should be left to the owner to decide what they want, as there are pro`s and cons on both sides. It is Illegal now in Namibia as well, and I so wanted a Dobie with cropped ears and now will never be able to own one. It is just unfair as they look so beautiful with the cropped ears and docted tails. They do not look like a doberman without it done.

Have good news for all you that were supporting me while I was getting frustraited with my dobs ears. But she is now holding them up with just a small tape on the inside of the ear. Hoping soon she wont need the tape either. Going at 9 month old on the 21st. Thank you all for the support. Cant name each one of you but you all know that you all had part in the help.
