Doberman average life span

My first doberman was relatively healthy at 14.5 when he ate something he shouldn't have. He probably had another year in him. My new one just turned 1 and is way more active and has a much higher energy and drive level. He is also a lot larger, so I'm not sure what to think. I always said anything past 12 is a gift.
That is awesome that you had your Doberman live that long. I would say that anything past 8 is a gift. That's 33% less than the figure in your quote.

Our family Doberman just recently passed away from Dilated Cardio Myopathy, but she also had joint problems which were making life hard for her, but she did get to the ripe old age of just over 9
Welcome. I'm sorry for your loss and we all understand how difficult it is.

Average life spans for dogs are closely aligned with genetics, weight and health...sound familiar. AKC standards (not bigger is bigger) could lead to a good life span...weight and diet like humans lends to a good long life...and health/vet care, including oral hygiene will also extend a dogs life. My last Doberman passed due to eating stuffing from a pillow, however she was 7yrs old 75lbs and looked live a 3 year old with the care she received. A friend of ours at the park has a female who is 14 and walking everyday and looks fantastic.... My new girl is only 10 months old and I hope she lasts that long too... ;-)

I agree with your thoughts on keeping your Dobe – or any dog – in shape and keeping their teeth clean! So many people let their dogs get overweight, and worse, think that in so doing they are showering love on their dog. My first Dobe had his teeth brushed by me once a day. I also applied Bag Balm to his elbows. The vets actually doubted me on his age.

My sincere condolences to you on the loss of your 7 year old Doberman. That really is a tough one to hear. It reminds me of when I hear of a married couple that gets divorced after like 10 years or 20 years. It's like: You'd think things would be set and safe by then! Hope that makes sense.

I just Googled this topic and came across this post. I am glad to hear that others have got to experience more time with their dobermans than I have.

Last week we lost our second doberman to cancer at the age of 2 years and 8 months. Our first one was also taken by cancer, but at the age of 6 years. I love the breed, but my experience with them has left us heart broken, especially our most recent loss as he hadn't even reached the age of 3!

I'm so very sorry for your loss and that's way too young to be taken away from you. :(

On March 24, 2018 we lost our Doberman Austin. He passed away from a Bloat. He lived an great life and we care for him and loved him very much. We miss him so much and it’s hard to believe that he's gone. He was going to turn 8 next month (April 15th). Rest in Peace Austin. We love you and miss you very much.
I wish you comfort and peace. The pain will pass. I lost my previous Dobe to bloat. I never got to say goodbye except when I dropped him off at the boarding place, when I told him my standard "I'll be back for you."

Thank you so much. It hurts so much right now. It’s been a tough couple of days. I appreciate your works of comfort and for also sharing your story. May both of our Dobes (and every Doberman that has passed on) Rest in Peace. Love you Austin.

Also average lifespans are affected by over vaccinating, large use of Flea and Tick and Heartworm Pesticide use, early Spay/Neuter and bad pet food choices!
When 1 in 2 dogs today will get Cancer in their lifetime is very bad odds!
