Doberman average life span

My boy is 2years old this month, I met few people who had dobes before, most of them lived between 9-14, one is alive at 14, one is at 18 going strong, I think it depends on their life style, how we look after them.

I give my boy, fish oil everyday, salmon twice a week, herbal mix once a day with seaweed powder, organic apple cider vinegar in his water daily and teeth cleaning before bed, and of cause plenty of cuddles and daily walks, just trying my best to give him a heathy happy life.

Anyone else has any good suggestions?

Jake the snake I believe that keeping teeth tartar free is a big help. Bacteria can get into the bloodstream and it does affect the heart and other internal organs.

Good for you Jake! I've never heard of seaweed powder but I do know it's the oil on the seaweed (and oil may not be the right term) that's the best part.

I'm reading a book currently that talks about the health benefits of certain foods. I supplement fish oil once a day and coconut oil 1-2x a day. I also started adding some berries (not strawberries), veggies and greek yogurt a few times a week.

I am bad about brushing, I think I should buy an electric as that is what all of my club members use. I do brush once a week but I need to increase it I suppose. @Dobs4ever how often do you brush? Do you do professional teeth cleanings as well?

Hi @Stephanie Atwood and welcome! you should introduce yourself in the new member forum!

Hi Gretchen, I clean his teeth every day apart from when I'm away (he stays with a friend on their farm), I use teeth wipe and do it when we are chilling out watching tv on the sofa, he is too sleepy to struggle by that time lol. The seaweed powder suppose to help his teeth clean, although I'm not entirely sure the science behind it. Never tried to have his teeth cleaned by the vet, as they will have to use anesthetic which is quite harmful, I think if you do a good brush once a week and give him bones through out the week ( my friends dad had 5 border collies and they all lived healthy long life, he told me to give him bones to keep the teeth clean and breath sweet lol), just need to make sure the bones are the type which is safe for them , I'm sure you already know that. :-)

My first male died at 8 yrs from CDM. Second female suddenly dropped dead one night at 5 yrs from CDM Im guessing. She had regular checks but developed an odd cough 2 days before which I thought was only a gag due to her health. She was a little pocket rocket and chasing birds that day. Picture of health. That is why it caught me unaware. I always said that if she had it I hoped she just dropped dead. My first boy lasted 9 mths from diagnosis. Now my third girl is 11 & 3 mths. She is a rescue. Heart is good but she is in renal failure, She has uremic pruiritis which we cannot control. Otherwise she still chases lizards and possums and is in good condition and shining. Im so sad that this itch is what is going to probably be the end of her. My heart aches. I said after the first 2 that I coudlnt go through it again. All I can hope for is that we do all meet again one day.........

How sad. :( What are the odds that you'd deal so much with DCM? I'm so sorry. I would certainly understand your heartache in not wanting to chance it again. My cousin had their first Doberman die suddenly like your female. At that time none of us had even heard of DCM so they were left bewildered. And they chose a different breed for their next dog. :( All of life is a gamble. My last two lived to 10 years old and died of cancer. But this is such a special breed! It's hard to chose any other.

I have heard they can live quite long, when we went to choose my pup from the breeder, she had two females there as her pets, one was 12 and the other was 14, and they both looked really healthy.

My "first" dobe (my parents brought the puppy home when I was about 9 months old) lived to be about 10. I can't remember what took her. They had another when I was a kid, she passed around 5 years old to cancer. Their last dobe was about 14. She collapsed in the backyard, losing control on her back legs and they decided at her age, it was best for her to put her to sleep. A neighbor had a dobe, they just lost him around the time we got mischa, to cancer at only 3 1/2 years old.

The Doberman I grew up with was 13 when she had to be put down for health reasons. It was hard on all of us but for the best.
Kai is approaching 10 months.
My Dalmatian was 12 and was having uncontrolled seizures. We all cried the day she died.
My Coonhound is 10 and has slowed down significantly.

Illness can happen and can't be helped. I have always the opinion that if they are feed a solid diet, get regular exercise, and lots of love most dogs, even large breed dogs, can live happy lives till at least 10 or 12.

I think once you own a Dobe you are hooked for life. I was meaning no dog at all for a while but you know I said that after the last 2.

We just lost our beloved dobie Blaze (10 years 10 months) to osteosarcoma Saturday
