Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

Do rats count as wildlife? My shop and property is overrun nowadays with no farming happening within a mile of me. No farming means the ground isn’t being turned up and breaking the cycle of rodents and keeping the population down.

I heard Stassi drinking out of her water bowl and then a rat screaming. This being the result.

Good Stassi! Rodents are indeed wildlife, but nothing I want more of. I don't do poison for many reasons but get quite a few in my water bucket trap - usually just mice, but sometimes rats. And a live trap for the bigger rats and rock squirrels (ground squirrels/rats, not tree squirrels), which I just drop the cage in water and they gone in a minute. Reckless will kill them if she can catch them, Asha probably would too, but so far has only nailed a mouse.

Lots of coyotes here in our sub-urban area.
We've seen three trotting up hill at use from 50 to 15 meters one night whilst I was admiring the stars.
Had my bright flashlight so I surprised them and they bolted.
Bonnie had t yet noticed but was wondering what was going on...so, I got her paying attention, not digging in the dirt for a beetle or something on the long line.

But noting as in past night walks with other dogs, there is often one that circles back...curious.
So I says to myself,
"Self: so theres one, two, headed up the next hill moving on, I see by their eyeshine.
Hmmm, where's number three?"
Self: Poking his head thru a gap in the weeds on a game path...10 meters away.
So...I had to push it, again, with light and voice. "Boo! Beat it!" (Loudly)

And it Just.Stood.There.
By now Bonnie is whining and dancing around saying either "let's go see that dog" or "WTF is THAT!"

So I've gotta get this one songdog turned ond gone, as I see over the on the other hillside that the other two have paused...start drifting back...probly thinking..."dinner"!

So I stomp my feet and take a couple steps while shine the light, and holler "GIT! GRRR!"
And the eyes blink and disappear.

So we then breathed a sigh of relief and decided discretion was now better part of valor and walked (not RUN!) away...
Of course, Now Bonnie has decided she is the guardian of the area and trails, since.
Barking at the howls, etc. And gets very watchful and excited walking back that way at dusk.

Just a couple days ago she alerted, and I looked down the hill at a very healthy two foot tall tail waving vertically....

Bonnie was on the job, wanted to stomp her feet and growl,
And run down to tell that big black striped cat a thing or two...

But, thats another shaggy dog story for later...

I was just walking Remy and saw this Barred Owl fly up into a tree. I literally turned right around and ran home to get my camera. 😂 I had to quickly swap the lens and get the SD card out of my laptop before running back. Thankfully it was still there! More great photos! I have a good camera but never learned how to use it, but even the auto setting takes better photos so - reminder to self to get it out now and then!

You lucky dog! I would love to see an owl in one of my trees! What time of the day was that? Was that just now?

It was about 6:30pm! I’m assuming it was eating something on the ground before it got startled by us and flew up into the tree. I hope I can see another one soon! I’ve only ever saw one once and it was very brief as it fly overheard (in the dark).

One nice thing is that you will see barred owls out during the days. Great Greys too but they don't go much south of here.
