Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

Is it chilly there? Sometimes they get extremely lethargic when the temp cools off.
I don’t think it’s too cold but maybe it is for them lol. It was almost 50 last night, which is a little cooler than it’s been overnight recently.

Whoaaaaa boy, it's that time again! I just saw these two big coyotes walking across my pasture!

Just a few days ago when I was talking with my neighbor next door she told me she saw a coyote following her and her dog. They were walking all the way in the back of our properties and a little more on her side which is very wooded. She said she turned around and saw a single coyote, a large one, following her and her dog. Her dog thought it was another dog and was pulling her toward the coyote. He finally pulled her down! She still had a hold of the leash, thank God. She got up and grabbed her dog by its collar and kept walking. And that dog pulls terribly. She said, you know how hard that was? I said yes! It's hard to hold a big dog by the collar when they're pulling you. She said that coyote was not afraid. Just keeping his distance but not running away. She finally turned around and faced him. I think they stared at each other for a moment and then he finally turned around and walked away.

She said I wanted to tell you to be safe. I said, you too! You should be walking with a firearm! She said, yeah I thought maybe a BB gun. I said nope. You need a firearm. And I'm telling you right now if I get a chance, I'll be shooting at them! If you hear something you'll know it's me.

I was talking to my friend on the phone this morning and just happened to look out the window and saw these two walking across my pasture. I quickly grabbed my phone and took a couple of pictures. No time to go out there with a firearm. But now I'm on high alert.:guns:

Holy cats, that's a wild story. Was that the Bullmastiff? As I recall, your neighbor is not a big strapping person either.

The picture is awesome. Thanks.

From what I hear, Coywolves are a real thing. This, in my mind, might account for them being larger than Coyotes.

I wish I could lend you Zephyr for a few days – ha.

Yes my neighbor next door with the bullmastiff puppy. He's a few weeks younger than Annie. Hopefully he develops a little more skepticism toward the coyotes as he ages. Right now he probably sees them as a plaything! She said the last couple of bullmastiffs we're very wary of the coyotes.

And yes, my neighbor is not a strapping woman. 😁 She's pretty 'slight'. How she holds that beast is beyond me! Although at 56, she's a lot younger than me. 😊

Coywolves, huh? 🤔 I wonder! There were quite large, weren't they? My husband thought so. I sent him and my son the photo right away. Both said, get a firearm!

Ha, between Zephyr and Annie we'd be a menacing sight! :bat:

Coywolves, a cross between a coyote and a wolf, are rare in Illinois. However, there have been reports of possible sightings in the Chicago area.
Explanation
Coywolf vs eastern coyote
The term "coywolf" is sometimes used to describe an eastern coyote, which is mostly coyote with some wolf genes. However, the term is disputed in the scientific community.
Possible sightings
In August 2023, there were reports of a possible coywolf sighting in Burr Ridge, Illinois. The animal was said to have been seen near 83rd Street and County Line Road.
What to do if you see a coywolf
If you see a coywolf, you should stay away and call 911 if it appears aggressive. Coywolves can be larger than coyotes and may look like German Shepherds in low light
.

Funny that my neighbors husband asked her, are you sure it wasn't a German Shepherd? 😁 With my picture, that of course I sent her, she now has proof! 👍

They actually do look larger than the regular coyotes around here. It's hard to get a scale of the actual size but they still look a bit smaller and different than our timber wolves.

It's breeding season now so you will probably have more sightings these days.

Yes! It is breeding season. Did you hear about the coyote they found in an Aldi store? It was up North somewhere from me, closer to Chicago. I thought I posted about it; maybe not. They warned people that it was mating season. They actually pulled him out of what looked like a cooling shelf. Like where you would have cheese and stuff.

Found it

ALDI Safety procedures chapter 39 paragraph 86: what to do after a Coyote Saunders in and hides in the cheese section. :green:
