Backyard Chickens?

Just out of curiosity I called the inquiring on what it would take to have a chicken coup on my property.

All neighbors within a 1000 foot radius have to be notified and in agreement in writing.
Then about 300 dollars later you have To request a hearing with the city council planning committee!

LOL! City life isn't for everyone I guess.

There's that much to it?I thought it was pretty much either you are or are not zoned for animals?
Here on the hill I live on we are zoned for horses and chickens,no roosters.
I would imagine we could have a goat also.

Oh yeah i heard its a pain in the a** for city ppl. Luckily, we already have the permit, but we live out in BFE anyways, so they'd never even no LOL

They are beautiful! I don't know much about the different kinds and what makes each one unique but they all seem to be very pretty!! I look forward to seeing more of your new 'pack'!! :D
 
Well, duh! I look at these just about every day and kinda forgot that I have them! See?? I DO like chickens !! These are in my laundry room....I actually picked these two up at a garage sale. :rolleyes:

My sister gave me these a long time ago and they sit on top of the cabinets in the laundry room. The two on either end are hard to see but they are hens. :D

On the plus side, I haven't bought eggs for many years because I know enough people who raise chickens. Chickens are zucchini with feathers and you'll have more eggs than you can eat.

I started chuckling...we have the Hmong here who try to raise chickens in basements...hiding them from their land lords and city council rules. The only time our shelters see a raise in the crops (so to speak) is when a house gets raided. Personally, I would love to have a coup that I could rotate around my yard...I would have the best grass in town and fresh eggs and plenty of frozen birds for winter. We only eat chicken, turkey and fish here so cluck cluck gobble gobble have fun on your new adventure. Ps...remember the fertilizer hint ;)
 
I wouldn't forget to check zoning laws first. Some places have limits on chickens and my require a permit for more than 3 of them.

I don't have them but was really surprised at how much these things poop! My thinking was it's a bird so how bad can it be? It gets almost cat or small dog sized and more often than either poops in a day. If you have to keep them in an enclosed area in the winter, the smell, cleaning and possible heating of the coop is something to think about.

LOL, one of our co-workers had a rooster in a crate last week and in an hours time before his wife picked him up the crate was loaded with poop. I do agree that it's great fertilizer though.

Like I said before, I'd love to keep them, but cleaning out the coop with my allergies would not be a good thing and the frozen water and all the rest in the winter is more than I want to take on.

haha there coming!!! our new neighbor has them in her backyard, so hopefully she'll sell me some chicks soon!! :)

This might sound gross but we don't clean the majority of the chicken coops in the winter months. The poop actually heats the coop in cold winter months. If you clean the floor right down to the floor boards it's too cold for them. We insulate the coops and just hang a light bulb, doors are open during the day for them to run around. Chickens don't like fresh snow and when it's -20c or colder we keep the doors closed
