Backyard Birds

Wow Gel, we have them in the yard all the time but I don't think they've ever nested so close before.

I have a bunch of photos I haven't gone through of different birds but the Indigo Buntings were back for a while again this year.

This year they have managed to bring up two chicks. Both doing well and I saw them making a quick flight this morning.
It’s the first time I’ve seen them out of the nest.
So those are the babies? That's pretty cool because I've never seen babies when we had a pair nest in our gutter several years ago. But maybe it's because we just don't recognize the young ones.

We put gutter guards on now so they don't nest there anymore.

These are Doves;)

These are Doves;)
Yeah I know. Dumb thing. Every time I Google it it gives me pigeons! I finally got this....

The chicks make virtually no sound (soft cooing, no chirps), so that’s why you don’t hear them.

Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and keeping the chicks warm (and hidden) under their wings.

The male takes the day shift and the female is on the nest at night. They make the switch very quickly and if you don’t see it happen, you get the impression that one bird stays on the nest and never eats or drinks.

When the youngsters can fly, they take off and rarely linger. Unless you’re there when it happens, you never get to see them.

These two are lingering, lol.
They were out again this morning making test flights between the fence and the neighbors roof.
They are currently hanging out in the nest.

I hope they make their way away from the nest soon.
There’s a cat been lingering around a few days now. He’s caught in the conundrum of squirrel or bird? He’s been leaning towards squirrel because yesterday Rocky almost had him, chased the cat to the top of the tool shed, where I promptly shot him with the garden hose:D

Uggggh!
They always land here!

Lame or premature birds.
This time a sparrow.
I noticed him as I was out the door to the market, so I pawned this one off on the women folk:D
He seems to have ill formed feet and lower legs?
They are not right.
They got him in a box, gloved up and washed him(her?) with soap to get off mites.

Started feeding him hydrated Canidea dog kibble of all things.
They forced it down him with a small syringe the first couple times.
He’s now eating of his own will from a tooth pick.

We have him out on the porch where his parental units can service him should they hear him.
I’d imagined he spends the night in that box in the house under a heating pad.

I’ve named him Ivar the Boneless Sparrow. Google it;)

And an update on our doves.
The kids are gone! Flown the coupe!
Saw them hanging around a few days then, gone.

The other parent is back!
And they are fortifying the nest.
Looks like they are expecting again, lol

Ivar is in a box in the living room under a towel.
He ate. A lot!
And he’s a mouthy bas:censored:ard! Lol.

To be quite honest, earlier I told Sam the best action would be to extinguish him, quickly.
It’s the most kind way to end the suffering of a creature close to death.
Ivar has me impressed a little.
The will to survive is strong, no matter the species.

If they have the will to survive, I believe in giving them a chance.

Every year my little wren goes into the little house I put out for her. And she's here for a long time. I read up on it and they do make at least two nests a year. I saw her taking more nesting into the little hole after I was sure she had already raised a brood. I have never noticed the baby's coming out or seen them around. They are so small as an adult, that I'm not sure I'm seeing a baby or not. But you can hear them in there and they're so cute. I love that little Wren! Their song is so pretty and happy. And I enjoy watching them go in and out of the little house. All you have to do is put a house of some kind out there and they take over. I take it inside over winter every year so it doesn't break. One year I was a little late in putting it out. When I did, she was in it within hours! I actually thought about putting out another one but I read that they can be very competitive. I don't want them fighting! LOL I better stick to one.:thumbsup2:

We've had a Phoebe nest above the stall where I keep the feed and hay. The nestlings came out a couple weeks ago and I was getting worried because they'd start flying around when I went in there but they kept hitting the sky lights like they couldn't figure out how to get out. I see they were finally gone yesterday so maybe they were just staying in there until they could fly better.

Birds (and probably a lot of other animals) will fly towards the light. In your case, a skylight. Did you ever have a bird in your garage? They just seem like they don't want to fly down and out.

Ah-ha!!!! I learned something new today!!!!

Oh all the time and you're right about that. A hummingbird followed me in the kitchen when I went to refill the feeder and it took forever to get it out. I finally had to pull all of the shades and lured it out with a hummingbird carving I had since it kept going to that.

Ivar is still with us.
He went to see a vet on Saturday
$85 later he came home with some tape splints. And some sort of powder to mix with water, supposedly for birds....
Apparently it’s not for his type of bird, he prefers the dog food, lol.
We picked up a container of meal worms today. Going to start the gross process of mashing them up, remove ng exoskeleton, and adding the worm mush with the dog food.

His one leg tape came off.
The girls re-applied.
We had to fiddle with it again today and it’s apparent his joint above the foot is lame:(
He has a lot of spunk though, lol.
Bit me a couple times holding him on his back so the wife could try and the-tape.

It’s very difficult, lol. His lil feet are so tiny!

Lol.
And 2 minutes later the wife got a call back from a local bird rescue who’s willing to take a look at him.

The first two bets they called Saturday either didn’t deal with birds or didn’t deal with “wild animals”.

So, at least someone out there is willing to give him a look see.

His family probably won’t be thrilled.
The whole clan hangs out with him on and off through the day.

Aww it's great you're giving him such a chance when he does have the will to live.
