Axel starts posting!

Well we made it, got the sutures removed and begun posting. The vet said would usually just let the ears breathe for a week but since axels ears looked so good he went away and started the post!

Is this the best way to post? I just have a feeling that he will shake his head(as he did before) and will get these out. I like to be proactive and wondering IF he does shake these off should I reuse this method or what?

He’s getting big(IMO) he gained 6lbs in 10 days. 25lbs at 11 weeks almost 12 :)

You post that or the vet? Looks nice and clean but too much stuff.

How long until a re-change? Should be 3-5 days and only out no longer than an hour.

Personally, I would lose the blue vet wrap and the tape closer to his eyes.

Just post/tape his ears and add a bridge.

A lot of folks will say to not use so much tape around the ears but I liked to cover the ears to prevent dirt and water to get in there. Ragnar was always into something.

The vet did this today! We were told to keep it on until 5 days then 2 days to breathe and we go back to re post on the 7th day.

He may have used the vet wrap because axel got all of his other stuff off prior
To suture removal. Added photos to explain “other stuff” - was suppose to keep it all on for 10 days but 5 days in his ears were free.

Woah... way too much stuff with the blue and forehead thing. Search for backer rod method on this site. I also taped all the way up but used Elastikon tape.

I think the whole 5 days in 2 days out is old school. Most of us just keep them out long enough for the ears to dry after removing the posts and cleaning the ears. Typically about an hour some do it for less but not more than 2 hrs out.

For me, the posts would not make it for 5 days and I would think you’d risk infection with them being taped up with no air circulation.

Also if they get wet they need to be changed but I’m sure your vet told you that.

Interesting contraption although I think the taping is way overkill.
We like much more minimal on the ears and letting them breathe. We change out the posts every three to four days and only leave her unposted for about 2 hours

I actually like the halo method but you should be able to start the regular backer rod posting method now that the edges are healed; using less tape and nothing under the chin. Oh and you don't need the cone anymore either since that can be miserable for the pup and push the ears in the wrong direction when they sleep.

I think the whole 5 days in 2 days out is old school.
The 2 days off is definitely old school and will make you lose progress so I don't recommend it either. I wish vets would stop saying that since it sets people back so far and they give up. Going 5 days with the halo is okay, but it isn't with backer rod.

I did my first posting ever the other day. The backer rod method everyone says to use really is easy. You should try it :) I only had the bridge on for a day or two before he was able to control his ears. From my understanding, once the bridge looks loose you can remove it. 20190302_105618_HDR.webp

Agreed with too much stuff on the ears. Those babies need to breath in order to heal and air flow will keep them from stinking as well. Ears look good though!! My wife and I used the "backer-rod" method but substituted the backer-rod for tampons lol. Search on this site for other methods, this forum has honestly been a God send!!

Zeus has a flip on his one ear but I think it suits his personality!

Wow 2 days without posts on?! Even when Rex's were out for the hour I let them breath I was still paranoid.
The main time ear cartilage strengthens is during sleep, and it's very common for pups to sleep with the ears folded. That would delay the process for months.
Posting yourself is a big struggle, but you'll be a pro in no time! When I first started posting I went to throw in the towel and called my vet asking if he could do it. Unfortunately he gave me the advice everyone else does on this forum, and I'm so happy he did!

My main problems in the beginning that I think a lot of people have trouble with starting out are:
1. Backer rods. Once I switched to tampons to these, big game changer. They mold nicely to the base of the ear.
2. Do NOT be afraid to get the rod deep in the base of the ear! That is key!
3. Trial and error with tapes. I got mine at the medical supply store, it was soft on one side with the sticky side on the other. Super easy for ears to breath. But to wrap the backer rods I just used basic waterproof adhesive tape.

Here was in the posts and all healed up! I was done posting at 6 months, but I think he could've been done at 4ish honestly. But always post through teething to be safe! :)

Backer rod method is easy to do yourself and that will save you trips to the vet. Small piece of tape at the top and st the base is all you need. Show crop might need a third pc in the middle but any more than that is a waste and added weight to the ear. Good luck
