Air travel with my puppy

Hey guys,

I would like to bring my puppy from Louisiana to NJ by plane. The pup is gonna be 2 month and a couple days old, I need help and recommendations what airline to use and considering the age and weight of 2 month old americam doberman puppy is that gonna be a cargo or carry to the cabin. Has anyone ever did this before?! What airline is the best for transporting the pup?!

Any info can help, i am a bit stressed myself advice me on this one!

Hi! It sounds like your breeder does not have a recommendation on this. I've not had to have a pup shipped. I imagine tomorrow some folks will provide a couple suggestions for you. I know there is also the option of ground transport services. So far, I've always driven to get my pup, but again, I know some here will be able to share their knowledge with shipping. You sound stressed, so I just wanted to give you a reply.

Hi. I got Rose in May 2020. I was going to have her shipped to me(from Georgia to Colorado) unfortunately at the time the airline wasn't shipping animals as cargo due to COVID. I had to pay the breeder to fly out here with her. At 2 months she fit in a carry on bag. My thought is you should probably be able to do the same

Yes thank you do you remember what airline they flew ? Is it safe to give them calming pills before flying?

Have you thought of having the pup shipped by vehicle?

I had my pup shipped by a professional transport from Michigan to Prairieville, Louisiana. They were very professional, very courteous and a lot more inexpensive than I thought it would cost.

I even gave them the option of me driving 3hrs North to meet them and take a load off them driving so South. He insisted on dropping the pup off at my doorstep. They did a great job. A husband and wife company that transports show and competitive dogs from region to region.

All of our pups have flown Delta without any problems. I also work at an airport who has Delta as a carrier and I see pups come through with their owners all the time. I think the big kicker is that they need to fit in a carrier that fits under the seat and that can be tight depending on how big the plane is. Since it isn't a super long flight from LA to NJ it might not be a bigger plane.

If you're just going there on vacation it probably wouldn't pay to hire ground transport for the pup but if you're moving there it would be beneficial to look into it. We had our last pup delivered directly to our door with the same carrier that was mentioned above.

One other thing that would make me cautious about flying with a pup that hasn't had all of it's shots yet is that it could be at risk for something like Parvo.

Thats a very long drive over 22 hours! If you had a positive experience with them can u tell me more about it what campany is it and how to contact them, there are a lot of companies doing this I just dont think they are all trustworthy!

Covid has changed a lot of peoples lives.
I sent him a text to see if they were still doing his trips.

If he is, I highly recommend him. Just a good ole fashion courteous man. When he says he will call, he calls. Very polite, manners…. He was recommended to me by my breeder and @JanS.

Michigan to La is a long drive also but they fed my pup and stopped at rest areas for potty and fun play.

He transports “Show” animals from different regions of the country, like from New York to Cali. Like the AKC and Westminster dog shows.

I totally agree there. Even when he called me to tell me he was an hour out he called me ma'am and was very polite and pleasant the whole time.
It cost a lot less than flying a pup too.

Thanks Jan for your response, I am waiting an update from @Ddski5 but if you also could tell me how to get in touch with him would be nice!

I sent out a text to Mr Tyson but no response. I am not for sure what is going on.?.?

A shame, a missed opportunity if he no longer provides this service.

I will try again later today.

I agree to try to go with the ground transport option if possible. I would think that would be less stressful for a pup versus a plane. That said, it also depends on how long the flight is.

We've shipped a dog and a cat via plane and everything was fine. All the airlines have different rules and usually the breeders are familiar with what will work from their local airports. For us (in Canada), Kaiser had to be shipped in a hard plastic carrier that had enough room for him to stand and turn around. The only crate size permitting all that movement wouldn't fit under a seat, so he travelled in cargo despite my hb being a passenger on the same flight. The flight attendant confirmed if Kaiser was his dog and that he was loaded before the plane took off which I thought was a nice touch. That was a 1 hour flight vs a 16 hour drive. When I was waiting for them at the airport, I stood by the oversized baggage area and I could hear whining and howling just before Kaiser showed up 😆 so I think a 16 hr drive with all that noise would not have ended well for one or both of them :spit: In hindsight, it might have been a good road trip had I gone along to manage the pup and I now think that was a missed bonding opportunity before all the puppy mayhem started inside the home, so that may also be a consideration for you.

Thank u for your concern so much, i was able to book ground delivery for my pup. She is coming with a lady who transports dogs and pups for over 20 years very much recommended by the breeder. After considering all opinions/ advices I decided to get her service to deliver my pup even tho it was more money than plane! I would be very happy if she makes it safe and sound to me! Delivery is scheduled on 4/5 of January i will keep you guys updated once she arrives!

Yay!!
Awesome.

You are getting a pup from here in Louisiana?

Would you mind telling the breeder and location? That would be very interesting to me.

Since your pup is only 2 months old, it's likely that they'll need to travel in the cabin with you rather than as cargo. Different airlines have varying policies and requirements for pet travel, so it's essential to research thoroughly and choose an airline that prioritizes the safety and comfort of pets. Delta Airlines is one option to consider, especially if you're looking for a business class experience.

However, it's crucial to check their specific guidelines for pet travel and ensure that your puppy meets all necessary requirements. Additionally, consult with your veterinarian to ensure your puppy is healthy and fit for travel, and consider measures to help keep them calm and comfortable during the journey.
