7 week old puppy adjusting to new home

See he's not distracted he just sits next to me or in between my legs. I wait 10-15 minutes outside at the same spot as always. He'll get it eventually. Should I just reward with praise or with treats? I've just been making a big deal out of it verbally

With Kobi it was verbally and I made a HUGE deal out of it. But it's entirely your choice.

They have to learn how to tell you (this will come in time!) It is the repeated praise when they are passing their urine, taken to the same area to eliminate, and barriers such as baby gates and crates that helps them learn the places and times to go out.

Wow so night 3 in the crate. What a change, doesn't cry out unless he needs to potty and he knows when I take him out and say "go potty" that its time to go. Picking up on lots fast. Getting muuuuch better on the leash for walks and seems to be more confident not timid like before. Caught him trying to chew on the crown molding today though

Glad to hear that things are going better! Yes, they are chewers. I found that if you redirect to appropriate things to chew it makes everybody happy. I used cow ears and bully sticks ( not everyone will agree - but my furniture is not destroyed - so pick your battles) and of course all sorts of toys. I should add never leave these types of things in the crate as they can be choking hazards.

Yup, redirection for chewing is what I do as well. But like My2Girls said, do not leave these in the crate with him as any chews/toys should be given with supervision only at this young of an age.

Great improvement! :thumbsup2:

I only leave a large stuffed animal in the crate with him while he sleeps because he likes to cuddle with it. is that still a choking hazard? I've been redirecting him to pig ear slivers and his Kong when he gets mouthy at all.

Unfortunately, yes it is. Personally, I would remove it just to be safe. Choking aside, foreign body ingestions are no fun and can lead to costly emergency surgery.

I'm glad he's making progress and really 3 days is pretty good. I still praise our dogs to this day when they go, out of habit.

I do too!...He's probably like, "Umm...really not that big of a deal, Mother...you embarrass me sometimes!"...Well...if he could think like that!...but I think my baby talk would embarrass him FAR more!! It sure made my Dad and brother feel sorry for him!!...like a mom of teenagers still insisting on kisses at school drop-off...which I would DEFINITELY do if I had human progeny!
