Whoa~! Rein 'em in here and show your horse! 2026

I love it! I like unique names and it just rolls off the tongue. That’s really cool you’ve had him since a yearling, I’d love to and I’m used to green horses but I’d rather not start one on my own.
Well I first saw him as a yearling. But I bought him as a 2-year-old and brought him home at two and a half years of age. The guy I bought him from broke him and put training on him for me. I was over there a lot so I got to be a part of it. He did a good job with him. I've never had a problem with him. 🥰

This is just a shameless plug but has anyone here ever looked into infrared/magnet therapy for their horses? Facebook ads got me again but I ordered an infrared magnetic poll pad to put on Nachos halter and bridle and it’s amazing the difference it’s made, pretty much immediately. He’s not a particularly nervous sort but he is a young Thoroughbred so he would be looky on our rides and sometimes a little antsy being tied for grooming, with the poll pad this man is CHILL when standing he yawns, licks, chews, and practically takes a nap. He’s also relaxes considerably under saddle. The first two times I had him trimmed he was a little difficult, I did have a chiropractor come out and adjust him (his pelvis was out of whack and a sore SI) so while that was detrimental this most recent time he was 80% better. It’s the best $40 I’ve spent on horse gear and I have a lot 😅. I just thought I’d let yall know in case you were curious or had never heard of it before, horses can hold a lot of tension and this is such an inexpensive and simple tool to help.

Wow! Yes, I've heard of this and saw one used in a horse blanket on YT. I was mildly curious since I believe a lot of stuff that some folks feel as "wacky". So to hear your experience is really exciting! Can you give me a link to that poll pad? I just might like to try that on my boy, Stilts. I just wonder if it would give him a little more relaxation now that he has one eye!

I haven't heard about it for horses but I have for dogs. Good to know it helps if needed.

The one I bought is from a brand called Benefab, you can find them on Amazon but they also have an actual website and a number of other products. But if you’re wanting the one with magnets it’s the “Smart” version as they’re impossible to tell apart visually otherwise.

Found it! Thank you! I'm going to try it!!

It was a beautiful day to go for a horseback ride. Barely 70° , Sunny with a light Breeze. So my girlfriend and I took her two horses and went about three miles down to the state park.

Her 3/4 Friesian (left) and Tennessee Walker that she adopted from a friend of hers that was moving. I rode him. I always wanted to try a Walker and it was pretty neat!
20260521_161624.webpWe had a great time but it's always a bit disappointing that they don't maintain it for the horseback Riders like they do for the hunters. There was mowing that really should have been done and they really need to widen the trails. Kick back all that wild brush! And there's so many trees down in the forest. But once in a while you'll see it right on the trail. This one didn't seem like it was hanging on by very much as we quickly ducked and went under it!
20260521_141123.webpAnd then this one that we couldn't even pass. We had to turn around.😮‍💨

My very first time in a helmet! I've never worn one. I was either in a baseball cap, a cowboy hat or nothing. But after a few concussions ( only one from a horse) at my age, which is old, I figured I better protect my head. My son told me Mom, if you fall off, you're going to die.🤭🤪 Could be I guess. So to satisfy everybody else I wore a helmet. Hey, I never thought I'd be on a horse at this age, so. Forever Young, that's what I say!

My very first time in a helmet!
Every concussion I've had came from a horse - two incidents would have been fatal or worse, living the rest of my life with little brain function... never feel stupid for wearing a helmet!

I've only ridden a gaited horse twice and man, they are different & smooooth!

What beautiful woods! Does the walker gait? I know he’s mostly walker but just curious. Down here in Florida it’s been too hot to ride, up north winter is the off season but here it’s the opposite! I’m spending time instead just bonding with my new horse, grooming and just hanging out mostly. I also always wear a helmet now, he’s a pretty sensible guy but he is young and green. Even on a bomb proof been there type, they can always trip and I’ve even heard of horses having sudden heart attacks. I want to invest in a hit air vest at some point as well, I’ve been told it’s like falling into a pillow.

Mine were mainly from Falls. By myself! LOL One was when I was very young and stupid (Maybe six?) and stood up in a wagon while a boy pulled me. Of course I fell backwards. All I remember was opening my eyes and seeing my mom running toward me, sideways. (I was on the ground) I think I was momentarily out for a while.

The one from the horse was about 1983. I was on a green horse, bareback, while a guy walked the horse. (Is there a pattern here LOL) He said the next thing he knew, he turned around and I was gone! I was face down on the ground and out. Next thing I remember was an ambulance backing up into the area.

Next one was here, helping my husband stack hay. I was two rows up and if you've ever walked on hay, it's very unstable. I was talking Non-Stop, excited about something and just not paying attention I guess. And I went face down onto the plywood on the ground. It felt like someone hit me with a 2x4 ! That was one of my worst. Could have broke my facial bones. Or my nose. Just a huge black and blue face. A week or so later I was sitting at my computer and feeling dizzy. Couldn't get up without feeling like I was going to pass out. Called a friend who called an ambulance who took me to the hospital. It was just part of the concussion and sitting in front of a computer, which is bad after a concussion, (I didn't know that) and not eating that morning. But I was in there for a few days while they checked out every other freaking thing. It was awful. I think their main concern was why I fell in the first place. They thought I passed out. Like maybe it was my heart or something. I said, Nooo! Go walk on some stacks of hay and tell me how easy it is.:tap:

Another time I looked outside in the back and the Sun was making a beautiful picture on the trees that Frosty morning. I grabbed my phone and quickly went outside for a picture not realizing the deck was icy! Fell backwards onto my head once again. Almost knocked me out. I felt nauseous and I knew it was bad. I was starting to recognize what a concussion is! LOL

And the last one I remember was here again, running into our sunroom to close windows during a storm. We had forgotten about those windows and it was like a tornado in that room! Rain was pouring in onto the floor, the wind had knocked out the screen and blown down the TV...it was chaotic! But I went flying in there in my panic and, of course, slipped and fell on the wet tile floor, hitting the back of my head. Are you starting to feel dizzy yet?? LOL Yeah, there's been several so I guess I got to learn to slow down. :whoop: That's why my son said, if you fall you're going to die.

I had one mare that was half Arab/half Tennessee walker and she was one of the best game horses around but boy was she flighty.
This horse is 24 years old and what you might call bomb proof. Of course any horse person knows, no such thing as an actual bomb proof in every situation. But this one is pretty much there. 😆 Doesn't get excited about anything and sometimes need some good prodding to get him to go faster! I haven't even gotten him into a Canter yet. But that's okay because how he is on the trails is exactly what this old lady needs. If I want something a little more challenging, I'll get on Stilts LOL.

What beautiful woods! Does the walker gait?
I've never ridden a Tennessee Walker before but I am sure that he is in his 'walker gait' many times. I can feel it! It's really cool! Very different from what I'm used to, but a good different. :thumbsup2:I'm used to a regular trot so this is pretty neat. Sometimes if you push him he goes from that gait to a faster, bouncier trot! And like I said, I've never even gotten him into a canter. But that's okay! I love that gait! Its very smooth. Even his walk is faster than my friend's horse other horse. I reminded my friend about the time a group of us met up with two girls on Tennessee Walkers. We rode together for a while but it was difficult to keep up with their stride. As they were walking we had to trot to keep up! 😅

And all that is good bonding and teaching them good ground manners. That's just as important as riding as far as I'm concerned! I've done a lot of that with my three!
I want to invest in a hit air vest at some point as well, I’ve been told it’s like falling into a pillow.
I've heard of those and actually seen a few videos about it years ago. If they have one for my head, that would be great! 🤣

What beautiful woods!
It is is nice place but us riders wish it was kept up better for us. The parking is OK but could be larger. When there are several trailers it can get crowded. But there's a few picnic tables and a spot to grill and an out house too. The trails can be rocky in spots and there is an area that gets you to the river. It's shallow and we've stepped in a few times.

But its the mowing that doesn't get done enough. Some areas of the trail get to be very narrow, allowing only single file and the side branches of some of the honeysuckles and other weeds are practically in your face. And then you get the trees that fall like that one.

20260521_143435(2).webp20260521_143435(1).webpWe were completely cut off. We had to turn around. It's one big loop so going the other way we would have ended up at the same place on the other side. But we ended up only going so far in the other direction. Somebody will probably call on it. Maybe even my friend. She said she might. But next time we're going to go to a different area that she likes even better.

Here's my wake up call that I kept as a reminder. The horse I was riding was galloping at a leisurely pace, took a misstep and fell to her knees, I went over her head and in her scramble, somehow hit me in the head with a hoof. People who saw it happen said I was out before I hit the ground, hit like a sack of potatoes and stayed there. My next memory was in the ambulance and then a brief memory of the MRI machine then a few hours later I "woke up" with friends from the racetrack and my other half around my hospital bed. I thought why did they let these people (other than my boyfriend) in my room while I was unconscious!?! But to them I was awake and talking, the doctors were observing me like a normal conscious person, but to this day I don't recall but those few snippets out of 6 hours. I joke that I've never been the same since, but deep down it's kinda true.

It was almost a week later I pulled the helmet cover off to wash it and saw what my helmet looked like. That's when I truly understood how bad it could have been.

And that can happen so easily! Doesn't matter if it's a bomb proof horse or not. Sometimes like you, it's a misstep from the horse. You're both in motion and when the horse suddenly takes a different direction, you're still going the other direction! A misstep, or stepping in a hole is always scary. Even at a walk. When I first got Cheyenne, I was riding off the side of the road when my son drove up alongside of us. He said, how about you run her and I will clock alongside to see how fast she is. I was like, oh boy.🙄 Okay but for a very short distance. Because that's what I was afraid of. Running on uneven ground at a fast pace. I don't even remember what we clocked her at and she did fine but I was well aware of something happening like you! 😵 of course I wasn't wearing a helmet. But the gods were with me that time! 😉

My friends and they were talking about the time that she and her horse were doing a nice Canter when suddenly a crane flew out of the brush in front of her! Her horse went left and she went right! It reminded me of the time I was on Cheyenne at the park. We were just walking when she stopped and hesitated. I didn't see anything so I urged her forward when suddenly a large bird, could have been a crane again, flew out in front of us! She didn't freak and I didn't fall because she was anticipating it. But I always thought you have to listen to your horse!

We've ridden the roads around our homes a lot. Sometimes a group of us. Sometimes only two of us. There's no real traffic but you have to watch for everything. One time going over the creek Bridge by our home my friend and I were just walking along, chatting it up like girls do. 😅🤪 when suddenly Cheyenne took a quick side step because she saw something in the brush by the creek. I promptly fell off the other side! Lol I wasn't hurt but it just shows you how easily it can happen!

That cracked helmet is a good reminder what can happen to your head!

Anybody else with fun horse stories? 😁

When I was looking at Icelandic horses in 2010, one horse I tried bolted in the indoor arena. I panicked and bailed off, hit the arena wall w/ my elbow and then head. A week later I was in the ER w/ a concussion, and that was with a helmet. If I hadn't been wearing the helmet, I think I'd be drooling in a wheelchair about now. Happily, I tried a little mare after that horse, and she was the one that came home with me. 🥰 I wear a helmet on every ride, no matter how short. I've had enough years as a nurse in neurosurgery and the OR to see the result of every stupid thing you could do to your head.

I have a young Walker (just turned 5) who is with a trainer right now, who is just starting to gait! He's on the trotty side, so I wasn't sure what gait he would show (trotty is definitely better than pacey), but it looks to be a very nice saddle rack.

I had a fall off of him a year ago when he was still very green and unsure, just a freak accident that wasn't his fault, but I broke a vertebrae. I broke my confidence too, so he will stay w/ the trainer until next year, and I think by then she will have most of the kinks and squirts worked out for me.

This was maybe the 5th time she'd worked on gait w/ him, so he was still finding his balance w/ it. You can see him alternating betw. a soft gait and trot during this clip. The trainer is not a gaited trainer, but she's done a lot with classical dressage type lateral work, and with this horse's natural inclination to gait, he has picked it up very easily.

I contacted Stubben about this saddle, they didn't have ANY info on it.
It is most likely a Siegfried model but can't say without seeing the whole thing, and of those there is a close contact and an all purpose... The name in large letters is probably a former owners horses name, it's not a model name. Here's a good informational conversation about a Stubben, the photos don't load for me, but you can read through and get an idea. Krefeld is a town in Germany so probably indicates where it was made - I think they had several places in Germany. One thing I've heard is their best saddles were made in Germany, vs some made in England.

Hope this helps!

reminds me of an Arab I trained and he did a normal walk/trot/canter/gallop but then he had a "running walk" as well. Not sure what it's really called but smooth as butter, a very fast ground-covering walk.
