My 10 year old still has soft poop after 2 mo on pro plan sensitive stomach. Complete physical ok. What ideas to firm up his stools?

Sorry you and your dog are dealing with this. I think I’ve become the poop master after the many issues my girl had. Pro plan did not work for Pepper. If you see my threads which I have many related to loose stools. Which pro plan are you using?

Stool sample ok?

We tried many different kibbles until we finally found hills ID digestion recommended by my vet. Many people would disagree because it’s hills, but believe me we’ve tried everything and we’ve come to the conclusion that my dog is extremely sensitive to a lot of fat in her diet and just in general, has a sensitive stomach.

How much kibble are you feeding him and are you feeding him anything else treats add-ons toppers things like that?

And is he getting anything in the yard or the house that he’s potentially consuming and causing the loose stools?

We finally found a kibble that works for my dog, daily she takes psyllium husks along with canned pure pumpkin plus a probiotic. Do you give him a probiotic?

How long has he had loose stools? Is it firm at all? How many times a day? Any blood?

A lot of resources and info on this forum.

What is your vet saying? I’m assuming they’re aware of the loose stools?

Changing kibble I’m sure you know will
Upset their stomach too, but after 2 months he should be doing ok. Others on this forum have had issues with pro plan too- loose stools.

We went to 5 vets before we were able to find a solution. Different kibbles, prescription kibbles, probiotics, stool sample, vegetarian diet, elimination, diet you name it.

I have always had success after transition failure by cutting the feed rate by half and after a few days you will of course have less poop but I get the good scooping poops.
I always make the slow transition to a new food. The last time was recent with a move away from pro-plan to Inushuk(?) The new food was dense so you do not feed the same volume as PPP so this was accounted for in the shortened rations.

My last boy Hanno could not settle on a kibble w/o diarrhea. I finally started him on slippery elm powder (you can get it at the local health food store, or online), 1/2 tsp. sprinkled on his food daily. Since it's good for constipation as well as diarrhea, it's hard to give too much. It worked very well for Hanno.

My current boy is raw fed (mostly) and the kibble he does get is Nutrisource chicken and rice. His breeder recommended it and I like it well enough (as does he). He's had diarrhea maybe twice in his 3 years and that was not due to his food.

Hills I/D is way over priced at $7/lb and its garbage, ie full of corn filler and chicken which lots of dogs are allergic too.
Oh thanks for your input @Daveone23. Not sure you understand what we’ve been through, feel free to check the forum though! My girl is thriving on Hills and so therefore, she’ll stay on it. She’s not allergic to it one bit. 😃

And add to above I just realized you were the one that is the original poster when I was trying to help you! I would suggest to not come on the forum and ask for help and then be rude in response. I think that’s just common sense in general 🤷‍♀️

And you think pro plan is better than hills?? lol Pretty sure they’re in the same boat.

So good luck to you!

Maybe I’m missing something said on another thread?
I don’t believe it’s rude to point out corn and fillers in dog food? Or the over price of said food?
I copied this from Hills ID, it’s not the total of ingredients, just the top .

Chicken, Cracked Pearled Barley, Brown Rice, Brewers Rice, Whole Grain Corn, Corn Protein Meal, Chicken Fat, Chicken Meal, Egg Product, Chicken Liver Flavor, Pork Liver Flavor, Ground Pecan Shells, Lactic Acid, Potassium Chlorid

Ground pecan shells??

I know I’ve tried several foods on my dogs over the years, it can be frustrating.
One food produces a quality poop for one dog while the other is blowing mud out the backside.
Even with a slow transition.

Once I find something that works well for both of them I’d stick with it and add things to boost the nutritional value.
My last female was allergic to corn.

If hills is working for your dog, great.

Typically when someone offers advice you respond I would think not like above.

Thanks for pointing out the ingredients, I have a bag at home that lists the ingredients as well.

Maybe you can post pro plan too?

I was simply giving advice never did I say feed your dog hills. Apparently, I struck a nerve with a few folks. Hills is garbage I get it.

Lesson learned on giving advice and experience.

I don’t disagree with your take on Hills or Pro Plan.

Don’t know what they put in it but the Pro Plan Sport does deliver on their claims of endurance and stamina.
I think this sites founder FredC described it as feeding your dog crack😂

My base food for any dog is PPP=sensitive skin and stomach / salmon or Kirkland (blue bag). If I believe I need something better I try but if failure happens then we are back to PPP. I trust Purina for some reason but do feel like something changed with the formulation recently so I moved away.

We don't feed PPP or Hills but everyones dog is different so when you find something that works for your dog, stick with it. Our vet doesn't push either brand but he did put Phoebe on Hills K/D before we lost her. It wasn't the food that took her but we did it, trying anything.
