Critters and wildlife in your area - post your pics

I've yet to see an owl in the wild and would really like to!! He's pretty cool!

And speaking of Merlin App...
5am this morning and out with the dogs there was lots of chatter!

This is fascinating to me because this looks like what I would see at my old house. I moved 40-45 minutes south and it's so different. I do still hear/see most of these birds but we added so many to the list.
Like I rarely saw a Indigo Bunting but now they are a common sight! I never saw a Crested flycatcher but I see them daily now. I would see an occasional woodpecker, usually a red headed woodpecker. Now I see 6 different varieties on the regular. We had a pair of pileated woodpeckers nesting in a tree on our property earlier this year. I really wanted to watch that process but Mom and Dad weren't having it! So I decided to just let them do their thing. It was pretty freaky to have one come after you. Those are some BIG birds!

This is exactly what happened to us! I just have to believe it's because we moved further and further out to the country. More trees, more Forests, more Woods. Right? Our first house was in the suburbs. And I was always interested in the birds but didn't get a chance to see a large variety. When we moved to our house in Lemont we were out on a wooded acre. I have a bird book where I listed every single bird I saw on the back blank pages and the list is very long! Then when we moved here and the list got longer and some of the birds that I actually saw one or two times before, now I see frequently! I'm sure it has to do with the amount of trees and the more rural area. But it's great.

The indigo bunting was my favorite story. I never even heard of that bird when I lived in Lemont. A neighbor was over and she exclaimed, You have an Indigo Bunting at your birdbath! It was beautiful! She said that's very rare here. I don't know if it was but I took her word for it because I rarely saw it after that. But out here I see them much more frequently.

Or even the bluebird! So pretty! I don't know if I ever saw it before living here. He was at the bird bath the other day and I told my husband, LOOK! The bluebird of happiness is here! 🤣

I was always amazed with the difference in birds between here and the airport when I worked there and it's only 2 or 3 miles as the crow flies. But of course It's heavily wooded here and pretty wide open there.

More trees, more Forests, more Woods. Right?
I think that's true but I think it's people also. People tend to move in and destroy an environment by whacking down trees and bringing in chemicals that wipe out nature pretty quick.
It's funny to me that humans think they are the smart ones. Yet we can't figure out how to coexist in nature. We are born and almost immediately start destroying things around us. On the other hand, animals are born, raise families and die without leaving a mark. Seems to me we have some things to learn from the creatures we share this planet with.

100%
And to add insult to injury seems like people can't even learn by looking at their mistakes and the damage they've done.

Love the owl video! I have not seen an owl in the wild....the only owl I have seen; was at Mendards garden center years ago....a family had nested up in the rafters, and they caution taped the area off....probably to protect the customers! You could look up and see one of them staring down on humanity....

Wow that's cool! Was it the indoor garden center or outside? I would assume outside but I've seen so many birds inside and I always worry about them. Sometimes they get into the store area and I wonder if they survive. But if that all family was at our Menards? I would be there everyday! Okay maybe not every day but I'd be there a lot taking pictures and just observing!

This was actually from July 18th. I was at the kitchen sink when I realized that there was a Wren building a nest inside this birdhouse! I was watching her and him both bringing pieces into the opening. I was very surprised because first off, I thought it was kind of late in the year to be having babies. Second, nobody touched it all summer. When I put the both of them out, somebody immediately went into the wooden one. I figured they just liked that one better. But now they are going in and out of that ceramic birdhouse all the time. So looks like we're going to have more baby Wrens!

I've heard a lot of birds like those coco liners for nesting material. I see something pulled so off one of ours too. They're on clearance at Walmart right now so I should grab a couple extras.

The last time I was walking in the pasture behind the run-in, I saw this and didn't look closely. I have often seen a snake or two back there when I'm mowing and thought this was a dead one. I was mad because I thought my husband ran over it. I was ready to give him hell when he told me it was just a snake skin. I was like, well, you're lucky. LOL. Don't kill my snakes! :tap:

At a gas station on the interstate a thousand tiny frogs going across the parking lot.

Looks like our property. We have a zillion of those teeny tiny frogs. They seem to really like the strawberry beds. It can look like an earthquake with all the leaves shaking as they move around.

Has anybody felt like there were more butterflies this year? We seem to have so many! More than I remember from previous years. And talking to a few other people they've said the same thing. My husband said when he was working outside they were landing on him! It's crazy! When I walked to the barn or through the garden sometimes it's like a flutter of butterflies. I love it!
