Elusive Chipmunk

Asha has learned that doing CPR on the wood pile drives the chipmunk out. You can see it at the bottom of the video at about 1:17 and again at 1:34 as he makes good his escape. This has been going on daily for a while. It always goes up the tree in the end. Between the CPR, the barking, the nub wag and the chipmunk getaway I'm getting a daily belly laugh.

lol she’s so darn adorable!!! 🥰

That is an awesome video! So cute!

Before I watched the vid, I thought that by CPR you meant breathing into the wood pile with her nose. I've seen a Dobe or two do that to the soil in an indoor potted plant.

 Jazz does CPR on grass tussocks trying to flush out mice or lizards. Yes, that same thump and tail going crazy. Does Asha get her back feet in on the act sometimes too? As in front feet smash followed by back feet stomp.

She does the sniff-snorts in the pile also. I got that CPR term from somewhere here on DChat - That punching with the front feet.

I bet Jazz is good at flushing them out! What's so funny is when she backs off the woodpile to look it over. Nope, no back feet involved... yet. 😅

Love it!!! Love the photo of your Della to @JanS We don't see chipmunks as often here....but in Illinois we had a ton. My husband would trap them, and we would "DRIVE" them to a forest preserve! ;) he was sure they would come back if we let them go too close.

We need to do that. We have a trap. Personally, I'd kill them, but my ladies want them released on the woods – probably at the park a mile away. They're darn cute, but it seems they can actually dig up through the concrete pad of the garage from the bottom!!!

My 4 foot-something mother, at the age of 70, had it with squirrels. They were rampant and destroying her house. She went and bought a live trap, trapped them, let them go into a pillowcase, then bludgeoned them with a hammer. Body count in the 30's. She quit catching squirrels. We still talk about that as her children/grandchildren. It's hard to imagine that coming from her, still to this day.

That's hardcore 😆

Yes, my husband wanted to end their lives, because they were digging up around our concrete patio. I was the one who made him trap them.... and to drive them to the forest preserve  You know the saying; Happy Wife, happy life :)

I like chipmunks so we let them be. The red squirrels are the destructive ones so when they start getting too thick, I ask hubby to go pick a few off (shoot them) when they won't stay off the deck and feeder.

That's kinda what we almost still say with very wide eyes when we talk about that episode in mom's life. I'll add a pic of mom with Katyusha for reference

If I could discharge a firearm in town....

Here's little mom with Katyusha. You don't wanna be a squirrel in her hood but apparently being a Dobe is just fine.20230513_193435.webp

That nub!! Going a mile a minute!

We've never seen chipmunks here, though we did at our last house, only 50 miles North of here. 🤷‍♀️ But we exchanged them for moles and gophers! 🤦‍♀️All of them rather destructive.

Yes, cute and destructive! They can undermine lots of stuff. We never had anything truly damaged at our last house and our Doberman at the time did chase them. But I don't think he ever caught one.

When we moved here this land was just a prairie and it was filled with these huge mounds of sand. We used to think they were moles. And then a friend of mine was here and said I think those are gophers. 😳 I don't think I'd ever seen a gopher and to me that seems so odd. And kind of big! LOL

So I changed my method of trap and the first year I caught 17! The next year maybe 8. And the next year only a few. And then suddenly I didn't see any! It was rather incredible. I was kind of getting known as the Gopher hunter. And I wasn't happy about killing anything but these things were digging up everything!

My girlfriend was still having problems and I said you know when I trapped one I would put the body right back in the hole that he dug. Hoping that as the next one came down the underground tunnel and ran into his dead buddy he would run for the Hills saying, " RUN!!! They got George!!" :sonic: 🤣

And maybe that's what worked because so far for the last few years I have not seen a gopher. Now moles are a different story. I'm still seeing some but not near as many.
