How does your Doberman sleep?

So I sorta have a sleeping problem- Restless Legs Syndrome. Some nights it’s no issue at all and some nights I have to wake up and move about to get my calves to calm down. So I start by falling asleep in bed and then wake up to legs going crazy and go sit in living room recliner, fall asleep here to wake up again- move to couch- move to spare bed room- then back to recliner, on and on, it can be this bad at times.

So when Ragnar was around, he followed me everywhere and got up when I got up. I would be super quiet but yet he would immediately wake up with me. Wherever room I went to at 2 am at night, he would go too. I swear he slept with one eye open all the time.

Freyja, on the other hand, is a very deep sleeper. Generally, she sleeps on a soft ottoman at the foot of our bed. When that girl sleeps, she sleeps hard. Even when you push and shove on her, it takes her minutes to wake up and figure out what’s going on. At night if I move from main bedroom to recliner or another room, she does not wake up at all. But sometime through the night, she wakes up and does her check and finds I am not there and she will come find me and lay down beside me.

Amazes me how Rag slept with one eye open and very easily arouseable and then Freyja is like a damn zombie.

I’m sorry to hear about your legs that is something I have to and I’m sure running/ activity makes it worse.

Have you tried a weighted blanket? That always calms mine down. Also, natural calm magnesium, I drink it daily.

Pepper had been scratching her crate bed like a maniac at night- recent thing she’s started. Woke me up this week in a panic, I tell her go to sleep and she’s does. Then hours later back to it and then she goes to bed 😵‍💫 she is also a very light sleeper which is a pain. I get up to use the restroom and I get a stare down and sometimes a peep- she makes bird peeps 🐥 we call her tweet.
I hope to put her in our bed someday when we get a king bed lol and I can trust her.

Sounds like she’s simialr to Ragnars sleeping 😴☺️

Katyusha is a relatively light sleeper, although she doesn't move around a lot even if she is awake. She doesn't get up to go check on things in the night or anything like that. I usually am awake before my alarm, and she is aware that I am awake. This is the primary time we get snuggle time, because neither of us feel compelled to go anywhere other than just stay put and enjoy each other's company. If I am needing to get up and leave the bed in the night, I have to very carefully whisper to her "I'll be right back." and if I do that, she stays right where I left her. If I don't, she's coming along. After the alarm goes off, then I swear she knows as soon as I even think that it's probably time to get up. Sometimes I think she knows my thought before I think it, and at that moment she bolts out of bed and starts doing what I admire as her morning yoga routine: Everything gets stretched, front legs, back legs. She makes a small vocalization to me, as I am clearly not fast enough at getting out of bed, then she goes downstairs and looks out the glass in the front door and sounds the alarm. Every. Single. Morning. I am never there to see what she is alarming over, but she is done by the time Toby and I get to where she is. Maybe she's just telling everyone who will listen that this house is protected before we get there. I could see her doing that.

Both of our dogs are very good sleepers. Olive goes to bed with hubby and sleeps all night and Elroy sleeps with me on the couch for a good share of the night. Elroy alerts as soon as I stir and if I run to the bathroom, he's by my side the whole time, then settles right back in and goes to sleep again.

Jazz sleeps well.......but.......she sleeps with all her senses primed to detect anything that needs seeing to. Some nights it's peaceful and some nights she's growling and alerting every hour! Well it feels like that. If she is cosy in her bed and I get up she will stay put, even when camping. I used to make her get up and come with me if it was a longish walk to the facilities but these days I leave her be to keep the bed warm!

Same with Kaiser.
Even when you push and shove on her, it takes her minutes to wake up
This is amazing. I wish Kaiser was like this lol.

That's nice that she doesn't move around a lot. Once Kaiser is awake the Dobernado has started and you better hang on!
have to very carefully whisper to her "I'll be right back." and if I do that, she stays right where I left her.
If Kaiser is snoozing, I'll tell him to 'stay' so he doesn't bother to follow me when I know I'm coming back quick. Sometimes he will stay, but usually he is too interested in what I'm going to do so he wants to be there for it.
Sometimes I think she knows my thought before I think it, and at that moment she bolts out of bed and starts doing what I admire as her morning yoga routine:
Kaiser does yoga too! So does the cat. I love how they stretch themselves out before any major moving around. There's a lesson in there for us humans too! I do think they read our minds and Kaiser can tell when we're sleeping vs starting to wake up.
Restless Legs Syndrome
Interesting! A coworker has this and there's a fairly easy fix for it: Gabapentin! Your Dr prescribes it and you take it before going to sleep so the legs do not twitch as much. He said it completely changed his sleep because the movement would constantly wake him up. His wife is a lot happier about the sleep situation too.

Running does make it worse at times. Blankets make my legs hot, thus increasing it.

Yes.
Gabapentin or Pregabalin seem to help a lot of folks and it would prob help me but I just don’t like taking medication.
I know…sounds stupid but that’s just me.

I try to manage it naturally with supplemental magnesium complex and iron. Some nights are good- some are bad.

Stavros, Revel, and Trendy sleep in their crates. They are all too young, and two are intact males. A few times Trendy has been allowed to sleep with us like at a hotel. She's snuggled right up next to Dad. I think Trendy is a deeper sleeper too. She always smashes her face into her bed and snores 🤪

Ripley earned her house freedom shortly before she turned two so she always sleeps with us. She sleeps really well and stays in bed with me even when Dad gets up for work in the morning. If I get up, she's with me. If I dont come to bed until later, she typically waits for me or she will go with him then come back out to stare at me like, why aren't you in bed?? 😆 if I got up to lay on the couch, she would follow. No matter what, she's always pressed up alongside me.❤️

That’s me too. I don’t like to take anything if I can help it. I’d rather suffer through it lol. The coworker had tried magnesium in multiple forms to no avail, but I always wondered if he needed to up the dose for his problem. Something to consider if you want to keep the treatment more natural.

Asha was allowed to make a choice between my bed or her bed in my bedroom at about a year old if I remember right. Now her routine is falling into a really deep sleep while I read, sometimes snoring, and she'll be snuggled up next to me. The instant I turn the light out she gets up, turns a circle and lays further down the bed by my knees. If I have to get up in the night she wakes up but doesn't follow me. If it's time to get up she is almost always awake before I am, and if I don't wake up at my usual time she will start whining, which makes me double-down and be totally still until she stops, then I'll get up.

I have an X pen around her bed and the door is always open so she can go sleep in her own bed if she wants to. I do lock her in when she's in heat so she can sleep without pants on. Then after her cycle is over and the door is open 24/7, she does go to her own bed in the couple of months after a heat cycle, and @MichiH, she scratches up her blankets and pillows until it's what I call a "big nesty pile". She's following her hormones for nesting. When that phase ends she sleeps on my bed 90% of the time.

Funny stuff, if I sit at the computer past my normal time to go to bed, most of the time she will sleep on her bed in the office until I go to bed. Sometimes though she will leave and get on my bed in the bedroom to wait for me. Then she proceeds to moan and whine and make the strangest Pity Party noises you've ever heard. I have a video from standing in the hallway to record the noises, I'll have to see if I still have it.

I've never had to get up and sleep somewhere else in the house, but I have no doubt that Asha would go where ever I went.

I am going to look into this. Summer is arriving soon and it’s always worse in the heat than in the cold winter.
Has anyone tried natural calm magnesium? I swear by it for many aliments.
Yes.
Didn’t work for me. I think I’ve tried every natural supplement via Google, YouTube, TicTok, etc… nothing really worked.

Clarke was the best....he would be glued to me in bed always. If I got up, he got up....followed me to another room or the couch if I could not sleep. Glory just stays in bed with dad....she sleeps up against me, under the covers, and if I get up and leave, she moves to dad. We never had the dogs in bed with us, until we had Clarke with Glory. 1st time she went into heat, I had him in the spare room (The bed they WERE allowed on) and Glory stayed with my husband...and HE started letting her in our bed. So when heat was over; we were ALL in our bed!
Falcon currently in a crate at night, and I do not forsee that changing for awhile! Glory was crated at night till she was 1 1/2.

Apollo is not allow to sleep in bed with me but he has 2 bed next to my bed. He sleep well and won't wake up with any sounds but if I wake up during the night he will wake up so quick to follow me and can continue sleeping again when I go back to bed.

My husband travels for work once a year and is gone for 3 months, June's sleeping patterns depend on whether he's home or not.

When hubby is home: June falls asleep on the floor next to my side of the bed and then moves onto the couch at some point during the night. She sleeps pretty peacefully and rarely wakes us up for anything (except fireworks, she hates those!). She'll sleep until right when the sun comes up, which is always around 0615 or so.

When hubby is gone: June is on guard 24/7 it seems and alerts to the smallest thing day or night. She also ends up getting into bed with me most nights, which normally isn't allowed but I have such a hard time resisting her puppy eyes. 😊 Letting her in the bed also used to equal sleeping in a little bit, but that's gone out the window with Crank being home.

I'm curious to see how Cranks sleeping patterns turn out and when he'll earn his freedom from the crate. June didn't get hers until she was almost 2½.

Pepper is still in her crate at night, but now waking at 4:15-4:30 am… not into this new behavior.

I don’t say a word and take her to her downstairs crate and I go back to bed.

Could this be a phase? She’s 22 months now gets plenty of exercise and training. We all go to bed around 9-9:30, but after dinner she is lazy, sometimes we take a late walk too.

I know she wants to be in bed with us which also may be what she’s trying to get at?

Oh please no. No more sleep-deprivation phases! Has she ever been in the bed?

lol I know like when can we just sleep?! It’s like having a newborn for years 😆

Yes, she will nap on the bed sometimes and at night we all cuddle, then it’s crate time for the night.

So totally possible I’ve created this monster and she wants to be with us at 4:30 am

We've been letting our pups sleep in bed with us for quite a while as long as they behave. They will sleep until the cows come home as long as they're next to one of us. That said, hubby is an early riser and feeds them, then lets them out so they're happy to come back to bed with me and stay there until I get up a couple hours later.

I am working on my husband…he’s such a light sleeper, so he keeps saying no. She would for sure sleep soundly and never get out of bed if he’d let her sleep with us.

Fingers crossed 🤞 I can make it happen ☺️
