Throw Back Thursday

Dang it! I'm not going to let another week go by LOL

This was our cat Alex or Alley (for Alley Cat since we found him.) Totally an indoor cat but he really liked to go outside once in awhile. If this screen door was not locked, he learned how to open it. One day I went outside and watched how he did it.

Back in the '80's I worked at a thoroughbred farm where they had broodmares, stallions and babies, then the up & coming youngsters to start on their private track before they went to the real racetracks. Horses were always my passion, but this job sent me over the moon. My hobby with my personal horse was endurance riding and that picture was us coming across the finish line in 3rd place after 50 miles cross-country in about 7 1/2 hours. Helmets were mandatory at the farm, but not at endurance events, but I learned the hard way to start wearing on all the time whether required on not!

I've never been into any type of showing, dog or horse. But endurance riding was one area that always peaked my interest. Of course in those days I didn't actually have a horse! LOL but I always thought that that would be a fun thing! You really need to have a competitive nature to Show. But to me endurance riding competition was more about my personal best with just me and my horse. I guess that's why I was more interested in that than any other venue. Too late now! Both my horses and I are too old! 😕

Exactly! I tried the (horse) show stuff and I lasted about 6 months. Endurance was all about you & your horse. Any breed allowed, any kind of tack & clothing, Vet checks for soundness before, during & after and it's 100% on you to pace your horse for the terrain and its condition. And not get lost. Vet will pull you if there's any lameness or if the heart rate doesn't recover in the allotted time. Their motto is "To Finish is to Win". Plenty of riders go with plans to be at the front, but about 3/4 of the entries go to have a good time and to finish. I wish I could have done it a lot more, but it's an expensive hobby. Over the years I think I did about 6 or 8 50's and several 25's. There's 100 mile rides too (you have 24 hours to finish), but I wasn't even tempted for that.

Squeaky was our 1st Pomeranian. I think I posted the story about getting her at the same time we were buying a Pomeranian for my husband's mom. I named her Squeaky because she was just like a little squeak toy! So little and such a little voice. This was in 1984 according to the picture. She passed in 1985.
20221208_160659.webp Heartbroken over her passing, I contacted the lady I got her from. She wasn't breeding them anymore. 😔 One day my husband and I drove out to a big pet shop called Noah's Ark. Believe it or not, there she was! A female cream Pomeranian just like I wanted. While I was playing with her she grabbed my purse and started to walk away with it and I said, She's Mine! My sister was so mad that I bought a dog at a pet shop. :nono: But she was a great little dog! Never had any health issues in her life until the end when we think she had a stroke. And she lived about 17-18 years! Here she is a 1986 when we first got her. I love this picture! She was so small and she looked like a little Bathing Beauty or something! 😆 She was the only one to live in all three of our homes. Mostly our last one. By the time we moved here she was pretty frail. She lived here only a couple of years. I loved her fiercely.
