E collar recommendations

Well, I was looking at the Dogtra iQ CliQ and it sounded like it was run on 'button cell' batteries. I checked a few reviews and people were saying there were 'going through a lot of batteries.' Hmmm, not rechargeable? Not for me. I get it that it probably is smaller for the smaller dog and I WAS looking for something like that. But, eh, it's gotta be rechargeable.

So I'm looking at the Dogtra IQ Plus again. The same was what I have now and saw this review. I never had to 'pair' mine after a charge?? WTH

The remote training collar turned a Monster into a Teddy Bear. Like night and day. First time using it and worked much better than expected. I think the collar should be used in conjunction with a professional trainer to get the best out of your pet. The one drawback is after charging you do have to remember to pair it again with the remote.

I wonder if they mean turning it on? I have to touch my remote to my collar to turn the collar on.

Does anyone have a trusted source for batteries? I need to replace the battery in the remote, and it's a DC-16. So far, I only found it on WalMart dot com and it's through some seller, not WalMart. So I don't know if I should trust them with my credit card number, and if there were to be a problem if it would be hard to get a positive resolution.

I'd prefer to not buy from Amazon.

We just bought new Dogtra ARC 2 dog model. Like them a lot!

Do your dogs go swimming in salt water with them at all?

I have had a Mini Educator for years and never had an issue. It has been submerged under salt water every summer for about 4 seasons. Now that is time to replace the old thing, I am considering these Dogtras (mainly because they look sleek).

Jazz has the Dogtra arc one dog system and has used it almost daily in water, mud and a couple of times in salt water fully immersed. She's had it for about a year now and absolutely no problems whatsoever. Very happy with it!

I have the Mini Educator and used it for about a year. Only critique I have is the battery seems to be dying after a year of use. Other than that, does the job and also has good distance coverage. Once this one goes, I'm hoping to try the Dogtra ARC!

@Oh Little Oji Im guessing its a lower end model than the Arc. I notice the range is very low too. It says only 100 yards which is really not enough for for leash training.

I bought the Dogtra Arc after I had the educator mini for several years. I thought it would be less noticeable because how the electronics curve with the dogs neck. But I found that it is big and bulky compared to the educator. Its almost like Jaspers neck isn’t wide enough to meet the curve of the collar. Ill take a picture tomorrow.

I also noticed that the waterproof rubbers that cover the charging ports fit on more loose than the educator. That makes me worry for when Jasper starts swimming in the summer. I also find with my small hands the remote is too big for me to turn the knob without holding it in one hand and adjusting it with the other. With the educator mini it fit in my palm and I could reach everything.

It works well, but for me the educator is better. All comes down to personal preference. But once this Dogtra dies Ill be going back to the educator.

What do you all think about this collar? It has one review and it's a 1-star and the review sounds terrible. It's the Dogra iq though, and that collar has won praise here on DCF. Is this a lower model than what you all have used? It does seem pretty cheap and it's lower price than most every other collar.

Dogtra™ iQ CLiQ Remote Training Collar and Clicker : Cabela's

I don't know if you saw but that collar is low to medium power. Its aimed more for smaller dogs, or sensitive dogs. I agree that 100yds is not nearly enough, especially in emergencies.

The educator pro has been our go to collar. Up to 3 dogs if I need which was a possibility. Tone, Vibe, Stim with a bunch of varying settings for the stim. I bought this version over other educator collars for a number of reasons but having a stick remote was one of the big ones for me as I prefer it.

@MyBuddy I just looked and saw that educator makes a mini one now. I wasn't sure if you were in the market but thought I remembered you talking about it at one time.

I think so since it has the clicker and plastic probes. Ours are the IQ's but they're effective with our dogs.
I think the other factor is that this is a Cabela's review and most of the dog shoppers there need a longer range when they have hunting dogs.

Thanks, all.

My Sport Dog SD 440S has served me through my previous Dobe, and thus far with Oji; but the transmitter needs a battery replacement – at least I hope that's what's wrong.

I've replaced the battery twice in the receiver (collar) but now I'm seeking a transmitter battery. It's a real problem to try to make sure I wind up with a battery that will work. Many reviews of batts. not fitting in place. Batts. range from $20 - $35. One comes with a new back plate for the transmitter, a gasket, and a screwdriver! Makes me wonder if it's to address the battery not fitting.

Anyway, too many unknowns, and I've Gorilla Glued the collar in a couple places, and it's missing a screw where a corner broke off, and the transmitter is missing a rubber button/gasket so I have no ability to use tone anymore.

So I'm considering buying a whole new shebang.

I see the current Sport Dogs actually appear to be the very same basic physical shape and design as what I have! I see a Sport Dog with a 500 yard range for $159.00.

From personal experience I would not get an e collar with a range of 100, even 500 is a little short IMHO. If you intend to use it in off leash situations they can blast out of range so fast! I have the Dogtra Arc 1200m, and it makes for peace of mind that you can ALWAYS reach them. Mid range in cost.

I agree. And that top range is you holding up the remote in the air, away from your body in an open area with minimal interference. Even having your remote on your belt will lower the range. They explain this this in the dogtra manual.

I forgot to post the picture. I fit the collar tight enough to where it doesn’t move around his neck. He gets really good contact, but there is a gap that for some reason drives me crazy. To me it makes it more noticeable than if it laid flat like I thought it would. Maybe it will get better when his neck gets a bit wider, but I doubt it. Not a big deal but its not as “stealthy” as I wanted.

I see what you're saying, and if I recall, you said it's the length of the body of the electronic unit that causes it to stand away from the neck. I wonder though: What length of probes are you using? Could you use shorter ones and thus have the unit sit closer to the neck? The Dobe's very short coat probably calls for the shortest probes.
