Update and question about leashes

Hi everyone,

Cato is growing up now, he’s already 18 months old and 95 lbs.

Today he broke his second leash when we were walking and he tried to play with another dog. It wasn’t anything out of the ordinary he’s just getting so strong that most normal dog leashes don’t cut it anymore.

Can anyone recommend a good hefty dog lead for big dogs that areBFD344B3-ECA2-4050-8AB4-B196BC4F326F.jpeg 63A049B6-89D8-4B37-A001-C357468C350F.jpeg 44F74B02-74AC-43D7-A5D5-5028E148E9BD.jpeg tough and durable?

Thanks very much, have included a few pictures of how big he’s got. Still plays like such a little puppy though. :))

We have 6 foot 1 inch leather leash......good quality leather leash will last you a lifetime. Occasional saddle soap for conditioner ...your good.
Also provides a great grip for those “special” moments our pups our known to deliver! LOL

Biothane is also great ...we use a 15 foot biothane on more of our sniff adventures. I have found anything longer was to much lead to maintain during a walk. It’s fun to let Hoss just poke around and explore on a longer lead. Great product.....cleans up nice. Dirt rinses off easily with water......dawn for the tougher dirt.

Oh Boy.....so American am I......all those funny numbers!!!! Ha ha
Anyway ....all those products look real nice.
The mention of Saddlery is a good sign IMO......sounds specialized.
Nice solid looking D- rings. Me I always like the totally flat leather versus braided ....but I am sure they are both strong. Me vote.....go with a 1 inch or whatever you Uk’er call them. Strong pups we have.....you need the strength.

We use products from this site ....

Activedogs.com

Nice products ......tactical products are excellent...some real nice vests ...for attaching other things like hiking gear !!!

He looks amazing! Wow, what kind of leash were you using before, nylon? I haven’t had any break but we use leather leashes. They feel good, continue to smell like leather instead of dog, and they last.

Hi guys, thanks for your responses. I’ve been using really high quality leather leads from ‘dogs and horses’.

The problem is not the actual leash that’s breaking but it’s the metal attachment that clips onto the collar. It snaps when he decides to pull.

Will definitely check out the recommendations you’ve given. If you have any more keep em coming!

Thanks so much

Nice looking pup! He sure is big.

So where are the leashes breaking? Has he chewed on them and then they break? I’ve never had a leash break. And I have pullers.

Oops we were typing at the same time. Hmm where they attach huh? Do you have a picture by any chance?

One time my husband clipped the leash to the ring on the dog tags and that just broke/snapped right off.

Find a good quality leather leash with brass hardware. My dogs have broken some snap rings at seminars I have attended. It was there clubs equipment though.

Hi, yeah here is a photo, these are supposed to be the best quality leads out there but I guess not.

Here’s a photo of what happened, this is the multipurpose lead from dogs and horses, I’ll leave a link. He’s broken this one and the one with what appears to be brass hardware.

As you can see he’s just yanked one of the attachments right off. It’s lucky I had the other one attached just in case.A81EF124-B905-40C8-98EC-F01A5327CC87.jpeg

Yep good quality hardware is important. One good way of knowing is if it is chrome or looks like chrome it is most likely junk. Check with some of the working dogs sites, might have better luck.

So it’s the actual hardware that’s breaking. The times that it’s broken has it been the same type of clasp?

He looks great, I'm curious if you are by chance using a prong collar in combination with the leash ?

I agree with a leather leash, they are very durable we got ours off amazon for a decent price but since our guy is only around 5 months and we use a front clip harness so he Dosent pull I can’t judge the sturdy ness of the clip, so I won’t recommend mine specifically but definitely look into a good leather one!:)

*Just read that the clip is the main problem aha but yes as everyone is saying look into a sturdy brass one*
