More questions about ears

So the vet that cropped my puppy's ears is quite a distance away and he still has to get his stitches taken out...Can/will his regular vet take the stitches out even if he doesn't crop? Is it important that he goes to the same vet that did his ears? If it is, I will drive him out there if I need to.

The vet said 2-2 1/2 weeks until the stitches are removed, I've read somewhere on here that it isn't usually that long. Or does it just depend?

Also, his ears have dried blood on them. At the moment they're taped to a cup, do I just leave the dried blood on there? I don't want to put anything on them as far as ointment or anything goes but am I supposed to "clean" them?

I really appreciate the help! I know i ask a lot of questions. People ask me if he's my first puppy, although he is my first puppy I've gotten cropped and my first dobe, he isn't my first puppy...but I'm WAY more particular and helicoptery with him than i was with my others. I've read on here that "they're not dogs, they're dobermans" and if that isn't the truth lol

You can call the vet that did the Cropping and ask.

I would not take the dried blood off.

Usually it takes 7-10 days for the stitches to be taken out. Depending on how they look.

No worries on the questions!

I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to drive far to get this handled. I'd be the very same way.

Well, that is a good question – whether a different vet would remove the stitches even in they weren't the one to do the crop, and they don't even do crops.

It seems to me that they would be quite qualified to remove the stitches as it's a procedure that probably even a layman could do. The big question in my mind is: If they don't crop, are they anti-crop and thus wouldn't want any part of it? Or, would they simply not want to get involved in a procedure that another vet had done?

I would simply call the vet of your choice that is closer to you and ask. They will say either yes or no.

Only way to find out is to call the vet closer to you. Some vets will not touch a procedure they didn't do (and some that are flat out anti-crop).

I have learned that anything more then 10 days for stitches (unless they're in the bell and need just a few more days), you take a chance of stitches getting embedded, and causing a problem. (infection, abscess) JMO

I cant offer you any advice on the ear cropping questions but I can tell you that you have found the best possible place to ask all the questions you want and get realibile insightful answers with no judgement. I honestly do not know how I would have gotten through the last 4 months if I did not have this place to ask questions, look up stuff, rant, rave, and just have somewhere where the people all know exactly what I am going through and offer understanding and support. This is an amazing community of Doberman loving people! Trust me, the questions are just beginning with the ear crop stuff, wait till the end of puppyness and the doberteens set in :woot2: Just don't forget you now have this place to go to and in the end every second will all be worth it!....at least that's what I keep hearing.....fingers crossed:)

Ragnar had his first abdominal obstruction surgery at a Emergency Vet Hospital. I was inexperienced and did not know better- know I do. Jeesh that was expensive.

Anyways, my local vet gladly took out his abdominal staples.

They should have the expertise to take them out but may be anti-cropping and give you a rash of shit about it.

Another concern about using a new vet is that they may charge for the time whereas your original vet would do it as part of the initial surgery cost. But if you have to drive far there’s a time and fuel cost too so you’ll have to take that into account.

Any vet should be able to remove stitches.
Some of our past Dobes still had stitches for a few days when we got them. We went to our regular vet and they removed them. This is if the ears were healed.

This is seriously the best place ever!!! I really do appreciate all the help, it's nice to have a place with knowledgeable people who don't mind giving advice, and without being condescending!! I'm glad all of my posts and questions aren't getting annoying, I always want to do the best thing for him and I just don't have the experience and knowledge with the breed. You guys have been great!

Yes it is free at the vet that cropped but, I'd have to take off work and everything if I were to take him there. Which is fine if necessary, but I'm going to call his regular vet tomorrow to see if they will!

This was me two years ago....

I asked a different question every single day. I had so many questions that I wrote them down and spaced them out through the week.

Nobody got annoyed that I recall. Really cool how some of the core members are still around answering the same questions per every newbie.

Could I clean the inside of his ears? They look so dirty, and I saw a picture of another puppy and there's arent nearly as gross looking as his. They don't smell or anything like that, he is shaking his head though, could it be due to the cup?

I would feel fine with cleaning the inside of the ears. I've always used a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

Shaking the head: If he's had the cup on for several days, I'd be surprised if he is shaking because of it unless it's starting to cause some mild irritation. Don't worry about that, I'd say. He might be shaking his head due to buildup inside the ears.

@L7weenie, did you clean the dried blood/wax build up from your pup's ears while the cup/sutures were still in place? My pup's ears were cropped 8/22, sutures to be removed 9/3, cup still in place so far20190827_111455.jpg 20190827_111447.jpg . While the charge nurse tells me they look okay, the "dirty" look is driving me bonkers but I don't want to interfere with the healing process. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cropped ears can look kind of nasty in the early stages. Honestly, I questioned Oji's early on. The bottom of the bell gave me pause especially. It's okay. Dirty looking (as in dried blood) is not a problem. What you don't want to see are signs of infection – inordinate swelling, discharge, too much smell.

Once the cup comes off and before the first posting, you can clean the ears up some.
