Fed up with my dog and his diarrhea(PICS)

okay so this is a little TMI.. but my dog has had a problem with all any food he’s ever ate and I think in the past 7 weeks that ive had him, he’s MAYBE had about 3 or 4 solid poops.
I’ve taken him to the ER vet(just for them to tell me it was his food), he’s had multiple fecals and at least 6 dewormings and nothing found. He has been on rice and boiled plain chicken for a month now at least and I’m still getting diarrhea. The vet recommended something called forda flora and it’s supposed to help but it’s done nothing. Like I’m talking there is no solidity to his poop AT all. It’s making potty training a mess and I’m literally fed up to the point where I want to give him to someone else. I’m tired. Please tell me what to do. The vet has given me nothing. Posting pictures for those who could use it to help me.
I just feel like I’m messing this dog up or like I’m not doing good enough. And I don’t know what else to do. I can’t afford more vet visits for them to just tell me to try other food or to make sure he isn’t eating anything else’s. I’m ON TOP OF IT. But it hasn’t stopped he has a crate and these two pics he did in the maybe 10 minutes that I didn’t have my eye on him. My carpets are ruined and I would just like some solid poop :(
Not only that, but I feel like he just LOOKS sick? Please tell me if he looks sick to you. I just feel like his face looks sad.

First off, a warm welcome to DCF!

I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this with your boy. You sound very frustrated :(
I’m sure your boy also picks up on your vibes which probably adds to his gastrointestinal upset. Which unfortunately doesn’t help the matter. Stress can bring on diarrhoea.

He doesn’t look sick to me. But it’s just a picture. He’s obviously got something going on and it needs attention.

“The vet has given me nothing!”
Concerning your vet ALWAYS get a 2nd opinion if you are not 100% satisfied. A dog having constant diarrhoea for weeks on end is a medical concern. He should be all over it.

My first thought was an intolerance or sensitivity to a certain food or ingredient.
I’m actually wondering if it’s the chicken :scratch:and his immune system perceives it as an intrusive substance. Like an allergy as such.
Maybe try duck instead? I’ve not had experience with a food allergy but hopefully other members can chime in.

It could be an environmental allergy.

It might be a case of trial and error.

I’m sure you’ll receive plenty of input from other members who have a better understanding of what’s going on.

Welcome from Ohio.
Sorry for your frustration.

He is eating ok?

With a lot of diarrhea I would be concerned with dehydration if he's not drinking any water.
Maybe fast (No food or treats) him for 24hr . Maybe this will settle his digestive tract down. Then in small amounts do the turkey and rice. Brown the Turkey then drain.

Has he been on any antibiotics also??

I would also get a second opinion.

Maybe try Rx Vitamins Rx Clay. It's about $20 Amazon has it.

@Viemarangelrock
I was concerned about the 6 deworming's? One deworming can cause diarrhea and upset the Gut flora. But 6 deworming's is a lot.

Welcome from Florida

The concerning thing for me here is you have mentioned multiple foods tried on him in such a short period of time. It takes feeding the food for a while to determine if it’s the food and a very slow transition to new food with taking a couple weeks to transition completely to a new diet by mixing only a small amount of new food with the old, slowly increasing every few days.

I would NOT use Forti Flora. Find a better probiotic.
It’s possible it is EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic insufficiency). His pancreas may not be producing the necessary enzymes to digest his food. He can be tested for this and an enzyme powder given to supplement his pancreas.

It’s not uncommon for puppies to have soft or loose stools, but rapid diet changes can make it continuous diarrhea as his system tries to adjust to the food.

What food have you tried? Does he have a hungry appetite.
Do you use scented candles, plug ins, aerosol sprays? What cleaning products do you use? Is his water filtered water, tap water or well water?
Sorry to ask so many questions but there are so many things can contribute to it.

His tummy hasn’t had necessary time to settle down and adjust to a food before being switched again. Did your vet put him on metronidazole or just suggest Forti flora and deworming. His stomach is inflamed and needs some pre and probiotics. I use Nature’s Farmacy for my twins supplements. @strykerdobe uses a good company too so you will need to find what works best for him.
I would ask the vet to test for EPI and I would be concerned with dehydration from the diarrhea, also if vet is not trying to find an answer w/o constantly deworming then I would find a new vet.

Also what flea and tick prevention are you giving him, also what Heartworm prevention. Is he getting into food from kids. Does he vomit?

He does not look sick to me, just has a problem that needs to be solved. I understand your frustration, our boy has skin issues and 3 different vets have not found the problem. A lot of trial and error at our expense while our dog continues to have the same problem. I would suggest you look for another vet and hope to find the problem soon. Please keep us updated.

I agree with the 24 hr fasting. After that, 3 small servings a day of rice & shredded chicken (turkey is a great alternative), each day increasing the serving size.

I always keep Probios (Intelliflora) on hand. If anyone gets floppy, they get a dose for 2 days.

Any chance you have mushrooms in your yard?

I was wondering about that too. Now that it’s cooler weather where she lives, I don’t think the cold would support the growth of fungi. There are plants too they may ingest that is caustic to the gut as well.

He eats almost like he’s never had a meal before! He cleans the bowl within seconds. I’ll have to check on the brand of his clean and heartworm treatment, however I am a candle freak and do have at least 4 candles burning when I’m home... one in each room.. I didn’t know that contributed to diarrhea?? He drinks tap water.. I tried taste of the wild it was a red bag, the other bag I tried was Rachel Ray nutrish “peak”, now he eats just plain, white jasmine rice and chicken breasts I get from costco..
I guess I will have to look into a vet however we are going to see ours today because I emailed her last night that I needed to get in ASAP. I’m hoping she will give me an answer.

Dogs presenting with EPI have a voracious appetite and then diarrhea. It’s a malabsorption issue where his body is not absorbing and utilizing the food due to not producing necessary enzymes from the pancreas to break down and be able to use the nutrients in food and it gets ‘dumped’ out through diarrhea.
I would feed brown rice with the chicken but he also needs nutritional supplements added to his meal as well as a good palatable probiotic.
Look at the DogFoodAdvisor site and try to make a good food choice. I would stay away from all these designer foods made with a celebrity name attached to it.
Candles, diffusers, any aerosol sprays, cleaning products, even potpourri is toxic to animals and should be eliminated from the environment, also laundry detergents with added chemicals and scents.

I would find a new vet and ask that your boy be tested for EPI, if it turns out positive, at least you will know it’s treatable with enzyme replacement.

Find a good food and use it for at least 6-8wks to see if he can get settled on it. Also don’t feed a puppy food with this breed. The Cal/Phos ratio is too high in puppy food for large breed dogs, causing a faster bone growth which results in problems later on.
You can also try 1 tsp of pumpkin purée to his meal to help slow the diarrhea. Make sure it is pumpkin purée and not pumpkin pie mix.

I would also suggest keeping a diary. Input and output.

Do you think organic slippery elm would help, @strykerdobe? With filtered water? It won't resolve what is causing his diarrhoea, but it will soothe his tummy in the mean time.

I just dropped him off at the vet and asked for the EPI test. I showed them the picture of his stool from this morning. I will attach it, it looked weird and had a corn looking thing in it but he hadn’t had any corn at all. He vomited shortly after. I showed the vet the picture and I will be picking him up when they call so I will update you guys. I’m hoping they have an answer :(

He just got dropped off at the vet. I’ll let you guys know what they tell me. I told them he’s been on the rice and chicken diet for a while now and they said yeah that definitely should’ve made it solid by now. Hopefully they will have answers or I’ll have to be looking for another vet soon :/

He may have gotten into some garbage and now with vomiting I am thinking as a possibility of a blockage.
Looking forward to what you find out.

Just got a call from the vet for an update. She said she ran a test for guardia?(spell check) And it came negative. She said she didn’t think the EPI test was necessary because usually with dogs that have that they look extremely malnourished and that he doesn’t look it. Ugh.
She recommended a broad spectrum dewormer and a prescription dog diet she wants me to put him on. She is putting him on 10 days of something called metronidazole? (Spell check) for his diarrhea.
I’m gonna give it a shot and if nothing betters in 10 days, I’ll be going to another vet about an hour away that a good friend of mine with a lab recommended.
She’s also going to be giving him his last distemper shot, which I’m worried about upsetting his stomach, but he’s due for it she says.
