Can we talk about food ?

Hi Im a new doberman owner. Any thoughts on a food brand called Acana/Orijen.
I had my dog on Totw pacific stream. Wanted a better food and though Acana/Orijen was good.
I ended up finding a lawsuit going on with them. Have any of you heard of this food?

It really is hard trying to decide what food to use. I have spent a great deal of time doing research and found many foods have had recalls. Don't let the cute little tv commercials mislead you. Our breeder only uses Fromm adult gold dry food. We have taken her recommendation and continued to use it. The Fromm company is family owned since 1904, never had a recall on their dry food. I recently considered trying a different food only because Preacher has had some skin issues. After considering some of the top brand foods I decided to stick with Fromm. Unless our vet thinks his skin issues are food related we will not be making any food changes. You mentioned TOTW, they have a class action suit that was just recently filed against them. Do some research and you will find some big name foods that are questionable.

It's too bad about Acana and Orijen because they were the go-to kibble for many of us, however, I've learned that in addition to the recalls, its protein percentage is way too high for Doberman puppies (under 2 years old). I don't have any suggestions as I raw feed, but wanted to warn you to not fall for grain free kibble either as it shows a link to diet related DCM. Search Taurine on this site for more info on that.

Thanks for all the info. I definitely fell for the grainfree sales pitch.
Also i didn't know the protein percent was to high.
So much back and forth when you google foods for dogs.
She is currently on acana and orijen was on totw. Sorry if i didn't word that correctly earlier.
Would like to do the raw diet. I have not had much time read up on it.

There's a few different raw options too. I use premade frozen raw. There's also dehydrated raw and freeze dried raw. The last two are really light weight and we take them on longer hikes.

We fed Albert Fromm Gold LB until he was just over a year old and he did well on it but it cost a lot more than TOTW, which is what Della has been on for many years now. We feed the Wetlands formula and they both do very well on it so I'm going to continue feeding it since there is so much hype out there these days and I refuse to keep switching from something that is working just because there's a new story on it.

My opinion:
Yes feeding a Grain Free food to a breed that is pre-disposed to DCM. It would be a BIG NO NO for me.

I really don't think they are putting in enough Named Animal Meats and Organs into these foods. Most foods are just cereal and high in Carbs! Most of the Protein is coming from plants and grains! You just don't feed this type of food to Carnivores.

Also forgot to mention. I also think most dog food (kibble and canned and others) just keeps our pets alive and but not thrive!

My i ask what the brand is for the pre made frozen raw??

I use Carnivora, but I'm in Canada so not sure if it's sold in the US. However, Primal is American made and I've fed their food several times. Both brands are excellent quality.
Thanks i can get Primal right around the corner from me. According to the website. Ill give that a try. Which protein is best for a doberman do you think?

When I fed Primal it was Venison, but Kaiser had even more energy from it so naturally I promised to never feed that again :spit: but then I changed my mind and use it for winter hiking. He has a clear preference for red meats so bison is our main protein, but I mix in other proteins too because each meat has different nutrients. Make sure to get the complete meal as it will include fruits and veg too. If you can buy in bulk that's the cheapest way to go.

The best one for a Doberman? Well I would not feed one meat protein forever! Its best to do a rotational meat protein. You could do a week on one then rotate to another.

So I just had someone on FB try to convince me to feed Royal Canin for heart health and to not trust the truthaboutpetfood and dogfoodadvisor websites!!! Yeah that will be a short lived friendship. Sorry not sorry.

So i went to the store around the corner called pet supply. I questioned the owner in the store about Grain free dog foods.
She laughed and said oh that's the trend right now. Don't be one of those people. If it aint broke done fix it is what she said.
She said she has a doberman and has no problem feeding grain free. She said people just go through these selling phases.
She was just laughing and acting like i was a child. It was so strange to be treated like that. I was trying to ask her questions but she just kept laughing so much. I just had to leave. She suggested i buy a food called Zingnature i asked is it grain free? She said yes.
So I needed food grabbed frozen Primal and freeze dried Primal and a dried food called Fromme and left.
Guess that will be my last time going there. She at one point called me a trendy and i was just jumping on the bandwagon.
Crazy customer service.

Wow that is crazy. Fromm is a great brand so you picked a good one. I’m kinda surprised they carry it I kinda put Pet Supply in the Petco category. I wouldn’t go back - what a weirdo.

Zignatures is a great brand too. I used to feed it to my two and they did well on it but then there was some link to it having high sodium content and causing excessive thirst. So I switched.

Zignature is one of the GF's that is in question with the DCM issue!!

My pups are currently eating Taste of the Wild. Today I bought Fromm Gold(pink bag)(NOT grain free) Hope it will be an easy transition:pullhair: suggestions are always welcome
