So about the pit bull attack

My oldest son was helping an older lady that he has known most of his life. She lost her husband maybe a year ago and is getting older. He was there to cut her grass and do a few other things that she just can't do any longer.
It turns out this lady went to the Humane Society and adopted herself a dog because she gets lonely. My son met the dog inside and everything was fine. Dan (my son) moved a couch and vacuumed behind it and a few other things she needed done. The dog was fine the whole time.
Next Dan went out to cut the grass. He was getting the mower out of a shed, a small one so he had to back it out. Out of nowhere here comes the dog and attacks him in the calf. The dog wouldn't let go so Dan grabbed a rake and pried his mouth open. Mary was in the house and had no idea this happened. Now Dan has to find a way to get to the house for help with this dog right there. Luckily a neighbor heard a ruckus and came out.
Dan drove himself to an urgent care where he got 20 stitches in his calf. The doc left some wounds open because they were so jagged he thought some tissue might die and needed to be debrided. Well one of the bigger places he did stitch up did get infected. So now he is now antibiotics as well has to return to the doc to have it cleaned up every 3 days. They are attempting to get it to heal from the inside out.
I'm really pissed about this. Mary's homeowner's insurance is covering the bills. I feel the Humane Society should. This dog should have never been adopted out to this woman. What were they thinking? This woman is a frail 79 year old, a Yorkie maybe, but a psycho pit bull?
I can't help but just be livid this happened. My son is recovering from some rather large vet bills for Gigi. Now he's gonna miss how much work? Not to mention the pain and suffering the kid has to endure.
I think the HS is going to learn ya just don't piss off momma bear.

I am so sorry to hear this. That is just awful! I hope your son gets better soon. And I hope the HS took the dog back. It certainly doesn't belong with an elderly woman.

I don't know what is going in lately but it seems as if the HS is in such a rush do get the dogs adopted that they're placing them in homes that they don't belong in. Which on the long run doesn't help the animals at all

So heartbreaking to read this @GennyB :( My thoughts are with your son whilst he heals.

What the hell were the HS thinking? It's ludicrous! That's a terrible match and It's totally irresponsible of them to let the dog go with the elderly lady. That's neither fair of the dog, the owner and anyone else who comes into contact with the animal. Unfortunately, your son was hurt and hurt badly because of their poor judgment. Plus adult dogs come with a history, and often not with a great one. Their history has shaped them. He's a problematic dog and should of been matched with an owner who had in-depth understanding of what that dog required.

The fault should fall at their doorstep. They should be made accountable!!

Thank you! He is my Mr Calm, doesn't really get upset or mad about anything. That's not so true this time. His girl, GiGi has been sick. She's been staying here while she recovers so she can get more consistent care. Dan is a chef and can work some weird hours. We decided to take her home last night. Left them both very happy with G snuggled up on her dad.

They didn't at first and I was soooo mad. I found out Mary didn't understand she was supposed to. I'm just happy the dog didn't hurt her. She could have never stopped him.....I shudder to think.

This is a problem! The AR people have such a strong campaign to guilt people into adopting animals it has created a HUGE market. IMO, it's no longer about helping animals, it's a big business run very carelessly without proper regulations. Mostly without any responsibility for their actions.

So heartbreaking to read this @GennyB :( My thoughts are with your son whilst he heals.

Thank you! This could be a long process. As long as he is showing signs of infection, he can't work. So thoughts and prayers are needed so he can get back to work.

hat the hell where the HS thinking? It's ludicrous! That's a terrible match and It's totally irresponsible of them to let the dog go with the elderly lady.

They weren't thinking! I think it has become more about moving animals along so they can make more money!

The fault should fall at their doorstep. They should be made accountable!!

It will cause they haven't met the likes of me! I don't fall for their sad commercials and let them get by with anything just because they tug on my heart strings. I know the truth!

OMG, that's horrible, Genny!! Gawd, your poor son! That could have ended even worse! Thank God he was able to get the dog off him and stop further attacks! Like you, I shudder to think what would have happened if it were the 79yo lady that got attacked!! What a poor match! I pray that your son will heal fast and well!!

That could have ended even worse!

Trust me every possible scenario has run through my mind!

Thank God he was able to get the dog off him and stop further attacks!

I'm not to surprised about that. He was raised with dogs, some problem dogs along the way so he is pretty dog savvy. Thank God he wasn't already cutting the grass or not so close to the rake or even the shed so he could shut the door after he got the dog off him.

I pray that your son will heal fast and well!!

Thank you! He's got his girl back now so I'm sure she will help in that process.

Hmm......I see the dog is back up for adoption. Nothing about any potential problems in his description. That's just wrong!
I'm taking that to mean they will adopt him to anyone. Is it just me? Or should as much history as possible be included....like the fact that he just attacked someone and needs to go to a very educated owner and then some?

On a good note, Dan is healing well. After a bout with the first antibiotic not agreeing with him, he on the right road! Hubby has found some work that he can do so at least he is not completely without income. :woot: Things are looking up!

The past shouldn't be hidden from potential adoptees. They should be given full disclosure, it is up to them if they decide to proceed.

He's a problematic dog and should of been matched with an owner who had in-depth understanding of what that dog required.

^^ This once again!

Next time it could be fatal, that's the seriousness of it all :(

Glad to hear that Dan is showing good signs of getting better and able to earn some income through his healing progress- Excellent news! :)

Oh my gosh, I totally missed this when I was busy one the weekend but how horrible!

I'm glad your son is on the mend and that he knew to get a break stick and could reach it. I've heard with their grip it's nearly impossible to get them off if they latch down.

And I can not believe the humane society would be so irresponsible, not once but now again... That is a very dangerous situation and that dog should only go to a strong, experienced handler.

I've heard with their grip it's nearly impossible to get them off if they latch down.

That's what Dan said. He didn't know if he was going to muster up enough strength to get him off. I thank God everyday since that he did find it. I know he's a grown man, but still my baby. This thoughts of what could have been have left me sleepless. I keep thinking how terrified he must have been and how absolutely terrifying the experience was. I know....turn down the Mom gene, but I can't!

They didn't change anything in the description?? That's terrible! I would tell them that they should at least say it needs to be with an experienced Pit Bull owner. I wonder if they keep it 'low' so not to attract possible people who may be looking for a biter, if you catch my drift.

You may recall my search for Kali. We drove 2 hours each way to go look at a Min Pin that was up for adoption. I purposely asked if the dog was fine with children before we went and they said, Yes. Well, not true! Our daughter and the twins were in town and came with us. When I was talking to the women, (there were 2 of them) the dog was under a table at an outdoor Culvers. The kids were just walking by the table, when the dog growled. :wideyed: <----I literally had this face! I stopped mid sentence and said, 'Oh, she just growled.' I had the kids walk by again...same thing. I held the dog and had the kids just walk past me, don't talk, don't even look at me or the dog ....same thing, even when I gave her a light correction. (No!)

I passed on the dog.

The next day I was very satisfied to see the addition of NO CHILDREN on the dogs adoption page!
turn down the Mom gene, but I can't!
Oh, hell no! Me either! There has been a few, Thank You, Lord!, moments with us too and thinking of what could have happened just gets my blood pressure up!! And it didn't even happen! lol No, being mom never turns off. No matter how old they get.

Genny I know weve talked about this... I just dont have words I can say here on this topic :censored::complain: I can't believe they didn't update the description. Probably because they are "believing" it was Dans fault and not the dog... Ill just keep praying the dog comes into the right owner this time and nothing like this (or worse) happens again! Some people just dont believe a dog will ever react unprovoked... But even if the "provoking" is walking past, it needs to be addressed and handled appropriately moving forward to prevent it from happening again!!!

Next Dan went out to cut the grass. He was getting the mower out of a shed, a small one so he had to back it out. Out of nowhere here comes the dog and attacks him in the calf.

I'm just thinking..........when I got my first Doberman, I'll never forget him nipping me in the calf while I was mowing! A walk behind mower! He was young but I don't remember how young. I was insulted!! lol I couldn't believe that MY puppy would BITE me! :tap: Ok, it wasn't a full on bite. It was a playful nip. But it hurt! And when I told his breeder about it, she said it was something called, "Prey drive." Hmmmm, what was that?:rolleyes: First time Dobie owner! :rtfm: Haha!

It could have been something similar with this dog but much more 'meaningful'! To grab on and not let go is a full fledged attack. But maybe it started as a prey drive reaction? And unprovoked. In any event, its something that I hope the adoption agency passes on to the next prospective owner!

I was just thinking that you or your hubby should call the place to act like you're interested in the dog and ask all of those questions to see if they're honest or try to hide it. I'd be curious to know.

First: So sorry to hear of the severity of the wounds! Sheesh!

Now, this is just getting crazy, and it's what I've talked about a few times here recently: Bully breeds are being adopted out to the least experienced and least capable people! We have adoption events here – some of them a brewery taprooms. It's like "Come on out, have a few beers and make the decision to bring a Pit Bull into your life!"

We all know about the ill-informed hysteria surrounding Pits, but it seems we have an even bigger problem now. It's the opposite camp where it is believed that all Pits and bully breeds are sweet, harmless misunderstood dogs that – if simply loved – can be the right dog for anyone.

This is so true and it can go for Dobermans or many of the other protection breeds as well. Yes they are sweet, loyal dogs in the right hands but they are strong, intelligent dogs who need a strong leader to train them correctly or it could wind up very badly.

I remember a few years ago when our local shelter took in what was supposed to be a young Doberman and the shelter knows nothing about properly placing the breed. I called them right away to see about getting him down to DRM (a Doberman rescue in the state) and they said that they had already promised him to an elderly couple. My friend Lisa (Atti and Demelza's owner) used to work there and ran right over to intervene but it turns out it was just a young dog with Doberman markings but I doubt there was any Doberman in it.

Sigh.

Has your son reported the incident to the police? If not, he needs to. In most places, an unprovoked bite is immediate grounds for the dog to be labeled as dangerous and usually euthanized. The mere fact that they are trying to adopt this dog back out is negligent and quite possibly illegal.

Now, that said. I despise rescues that label every damn dog with bully features as a "pitbull". Pitbull is a breed, one breed, the American Pit Bull Terrier. It is not a type. True pitbulls are actually not common and HA is not an acceptable trait in the breed. In the old days, it would be reason to cull. The vast majority of dogs labeled as "pits" are bull breed mutts, they have even studied this. Because of the lack of quality breeding practices that surrounds them, it tends to lead to unstable dogs. Neither the APBT or bully mutts are for novice owners. Any rescue that adopts them out on a whim should be liable for any damage they cause. Even some of the ones that are brought up exactly right are crazy. Just like we see crazy dobes when they are poorly bred.

If I were you, I would not let this go. I would fight tooth and nail to see the dog destroyed. Yeah, not a popular opinion but a dog who attacks humans unprovoked is a serious liability and borderline impossible to safely place. Most people can not commit to owning a truly HA dog. And I would also go after the HS for medical bills. Involve a lawyer if need be. This dog has no business being adopted back out, regardless of breed.

Do you remember the one poster just a few weeks ago that adopted a young dobie from the Humane Society? He was a college student and his roommate had a young pit. Both males!! What was the HS thinking when they let that happen??? Thank god @Tropicalbri's mentioned that dobie rescue near by and he was able to bring him there. They're not doing these dogs any favors by adopting them out to owners that can't handle them.

moments with us too and thinking of what could have happened just gets my blood pressure up!!

I had to go to the MS clinic today. You go for different test, like blood tests if you are taking certain drugs, neurological test to check progression...you get the idea. When the tech check my blood pressure it was high, really high. She says "been under stress lately?" I just answered yes. I didn't even want to start down that road. Might have a stroke.

Has your son reported the incident to the police?

Yes he has. The result: Mary's homeowner has refused to pay the medical bills. I'm not sure what to do?? Go after the HS? Anybody have any experience with that? The officer said Dan would have to go after Mary in civil court for payment. Dan loves this woman like a grandmother so he doesn't want to do that. He feels like she didn't do anything but want a companion.
We have a meeting with an attorney.

If I were you, I would not let this go.

No worries there! I just pray the BS we'll have to go through doesn't take too long and we can get it done before anyone else gets hurt...or worse.

The HS should be held liable. I can understand him not wanting to pursue the court route with her... It wasnt her fault! She didnt know any better, but the HS certainly should have. Who knows if this HAS happened before, and they arent disclosing it, just like putting the dog back up for adoption now with no warnings??
