Peeing and pooping to get attention?

I know what you're thinking..if he's peeing and pooping in the house and kennel, you're definitely not taking him outside enough to use the bathroom..wrong! Apollo is smart..too smart for his own good actually. So here's what happens. He is the type of dog that NEEDS to be crated at night and can't be left anywhere unsupervised or when no one is home. Example: Whenever he is out of his kennel and I am not playing with him every second that he is out, the moment I look away, he poops or pees on the carpet..and this is RIGHT AFTER we come inside from our walk!!! He literally will save up some pee and poop just so if I don't pay attention to him later on, he will poop and pee inside to get me to pay attention to him. I decided to let him play yesterday while I was cooking dinner and the moment I took my eyes off him for a few seconds to check on the food, I walk back into the living room a minute later to poop all over the floor, and yes, I took him outside right before all of this.

The BIGGEST issue right now isn't that though. The biggest issue is that he started doing it in his kennel. He is 1 year old now and knows that he isn't supposed to pee in his kennel. He was crate trained since he was 12 weeks old and rarely had accidents up until recently....he has started peeing in his kennel every single night before bedtime after we put him in his kennel when it's time to sleep. It literally has forced us to have to wash his blankets every night at 11pm and give him a bath afterwards because he smells like piss..imagine doing this every night of the week that late at night when all you want to do is go to bed. We take him out a lot for walks and a bathroom break right before bed. But he will literally stop peeing at a certain point and we will come inside and crate him at night and he HATES being in his kennel/bedtime so recently he figured out that if he still wants to be out, all he has to do is squeeze out any bit of pee left over in his system all over his blankets and that'll make us come back over to let him out again so we can clean his kennel and him....What can I do to stop this behavior?! He is getting exactly what he wants by doing this at night (later bed time and more time out of his kennel) but we can't just ignore him and let him sleep in his piss. I have read that it's called "revenge peeing" and is a way of the dog manipulating the owner. I don't know how to outsmart this dog in this situation. Help.

I would let him sleep in it for a night. It sounds awful, but sometimes that's the way to show him its not going to get him what he wants. Easier said then done- Mischa was doing the same thing and I couldnt let her sit in it either lol.,,

Wow both of you experienced this???

I had a vindictive cocker spaniel - she would chew on my hair brushes and shoes if I left the house without enough play time.

I didn't even know a dog could be vindictive?! Surely not??

I would say it was either medical or marking. If you do not adequately clean an area where he toilets on the floor, he will do it again.

I've never experienced any of these issues so what am I to know *shrugs* I've just never heard of a dog doing something 'out of spite!' Didn't think they were wired up that way.

All I can say about the cocker was the only times she would get into my stuff is when I came home quickly to get something and run back out. Any other time she would be fine never got into anything. Either vindictive or she just reeeeealy missed me and she wasn't liking the little quick pit stop at home.

Oh I definitely believe dogs (and cats) can and will do things out if spite. Growing up, anytime we went on vacation, our cat would poop on my parents bed. Only time he didnt use the litter box! They started having to keep the bedroom door closed if we went away. He would poop on the floor outside their door instead- still gross but not as bad as where you sleep! Never peed, just left little "I hate you for leaving me alone presents". And in all honestly, I think dogs (doberman especially) are smarter than cats. I see it as no difference of a puppy barking and having a fit to get out of the crate- he just realized that peeing is what will get him out.

How did you get Mischa to stop?? I'm getting really sick and tired of him using up all of my laundry packets everyday..:tap:

I agree, I don't think dogs have that thought process. I think what he may be experiencing is reactive behavior to emotional trauma. Steam cleaning a carpet or floor for that matter does not remove the smell for a dog's nose. He smells the past smell and it triggers his brain to mark with urine or feces.
It must be cleaned with an enzyme that will eliminate organic matter, then sanitized by steam cleaning. With carpet depending on nap size, plus thickness of padding and surface beneath the padding it would be impossible to remove the odor without treating with enzymatic treatment first.
I think the odor he can smell and it triggers a physical response in him. If they have defecated a couple times during the day, depending on how much you feed, then it would be difficult for them to hold, save and push a Dairy Queen out to garner attention. I think that is assigning human behavior to them.

Ohhhh yes....you might not believe this but I promise you this happened - when Apollo was.. I'd say maybe 6 months old, there were 3 incidents where we were out having play time and he wanted to do something I told him not to do (such as gnaw on our wooden table, chew up my shoes, or if I told him "kennel time" (which is basically hell for him and the last thing he wants to do), etc. he would get mad at me for telling him "no" and out of spite, I kid you not, he walked over to my newly washed laundry right after I said no, hopped in the basket, made direct eye contact with me, and would pee ALL OVER MY CLOTHES. This happened 3 times and each time it was on my newly washed clothes right after I told him not to do something or to do something he didn't want to do. Another time was when I didn't have laundry out, he walked over to my bed and hopped on my bed and peed all over my sheets while making direct eye contact. You better believe I put him in his place for good after that time. Those "accidents" were definitely not from me not taking him outside, it was him being the biggest brat.:complain:

She hasn't fully. I use natures miracle to clean where she goes (I've also heard apple cider vinegar is good too, and cheaper!) I also took away all bedding in her crate, so theres no laundry. If she goes in her crate, I leave her in it for a bit before cleaning it up. I was advised to leave her until she would have been coming out otherwise, but if I notice she did it at 1am I cant leave her in that until 9 am! Ill leave her for half an hour or so then clean up. Its gotten better since then. She's realized she doesnt like having to stand- other option being laying in her own urine, which obviously she doesnt like either.

I have this pet odor/urine eliminating spray that I use on all his sheets, kennel, and my carpet and it still doesn't stop him...I guess no one has a real solution then huh. It's just that he only does this at night right before bed which means I need to wash his sheets every night before bed at midnight if I don't want him laying in his urine all night and once or twice is fine but every day of the week is too much. Also, I have blankets in his kennel for padding because the bottom of it is rough on his elbows so when he does pee, the blankets soak up the pee so he doesn't see his pee (but the strong smell is still there) so even if I left it in overnight, he wouldn't think he's sleeping in his pee. He has really bad skin right now due to allergies and thinning hair, etc so I definitely don't want him laying in his pee too long..

Crazy thought here and I'm not saying you should do this but would he pee if you let him sleep in the bed with you?? God knows I've created monsters by letting my 2 sleep in bed with me. You should see our bedroom setup - we have a toddler bed next to our bed so that everyone has room. Yes we are nuts!

This sounds very unenjoyable!

I have read that dogs are not capable of spite. I do think that they can follow cause-and-effect. They do know what gets them attention.

I am not saying this would be the absolute solution, but if I were you, I'd start with just letting Apollo sit/lay in his mess all night. Sounds better than him knowing that you will come running when he messes in the house.

I would start REALLY praising and giving treats when he goes potty outside, like when he was a pup. Feed him earlier so by the time its bedtime he is empty. I would also take him outside right before I went to bed, if I go at 2am, we go potty right before. Empty that boy. Exercise tends to release the bowels so maybe a little during the last potty break will empty him.

That's exactly what I do...that is the problem. I take him outside to completey empty himself and he will purposely pee a little and not all of it to "save pee for later" when we put him away. Or he will empty himself and the moment we come back inside, he will load up on water and drink his entire bowl before going back in his kennel.

He has really bad staph infection right now so I am scared to let him sit in anything dirty or it might get worse.

This would never happen in a million years because he is not capable of sleeping anywhere except his kennel when he is forced to be in there..I kid you not, I have never seen him sleep outside of his kennel because any time he is out, he needs to be playing 24/7. He doesn't ever stop moving. I tried to take a nap with him in my bed before many times and he will just step on me. he never settles down and can never just "chill". He always needs to be doing something.

Hmmmm that's interesting.. will he nap at all? Even after exercise? Is he able to focus during training?
