Wow, that's a compelling account.I had two red dobies I got from a guy in Fl. Mother and son was told she was around 8yrs and he was around 5 yrs. Good loving dogs, but the mom was showing her age with weakness in her hind end. She had to be put down about a year after we got the pair...They were inseparable, to the point where I took him with us to have her put to sleep, and let him be with her at the end. He seemed fine...within a week he was dead. I was getting ready for work on the night shift and went to check on him and he was on his belly head on his paws...gone. SHOCKED does not even describe how I felt/feel. Just passed quietly in his sleep. Anybody have any ideas about that one?

Holy Cow! 16 years ! I've never heard of one that old! Bless her heart!I think this has to be the oldest Doberman I've seen to date. Quite encouraging.

"Happiest 14th birthday to Cala and Ruger, who are two of three puppies from my Viva (UAg2 BJF Renejade Debt of Honor, CD RA MX MXJ EAC O-EJC NGC TNE ASCA CD BH FFB TT ATT WAC CGC) x Silas (Ch Destiny's Man On A Mission CDX, SchH3 and some titles I'm forgetting) breeding. The third littermate, Rylee, died at 11+.
Let me see if I can remember all the titles. Cala is:
USJ, URO2, ARCH BJF O'er the Hills N' Far Away, RE, OA, NAJ, RATO, TT, WAC, CGC. Cala is OFA hips good, elbows normal, and though she has not been echocardiogrammed in years, she's pretty obviously cardiac normal. She is PDK4 negative.
She has packed a lot of life in these 14 years, and an unholy crapton of attitude. Obviously she's the oldest Doberman I have ever owned, and I got into the breed in 1981. She about half hears, sees very well, and is still doing her best to terrorize the squirrels though honestly, the squirrels kind of look at her and scoot a little forward these days; their own version of the pity clap. Here's a video I took this morning where she was way, way more focused finding the best spot of grass than paying any attention at all to me. I was TRYING to get her to show off how well she still moves. And as is typical, she was having none of it.
Every day is special."

Not my Dobe. The lady that started Barn Hunt, Cala is hers.what a great dog you have!!! loved the video, she looks so peaceful and happy Hope she has many more birthdays!!!
I agree though! It has been said that Borong the Warlock died of a broken heart.I have read in more than one book that Dobermans (and who knows, it may be true of other breeds as well) sometimes die of grief when their fellow Doberman family member has died. That's the way it was worded in the books. Who really knows the emotions of an animal, or if they're capable of such emotions.
I don't think Kali would last long without me. Since Mars past on she goes absolutely insane if I even leave to check the mailbox across the road. That's just when she's outside and can see me I can imagine what it's like when I leave the house. Although I've been told by people that the noises that come out of her are horrendous when I'm gone. Who knows how destructive separation anxiety can be to a dog internally. As far as your comment about what emotions dogs are capable of I personally and firmly believe we underestimate what they feel and how they think greatly.Borong's career ended when Henry Frampton died of a heart attack. It was not long after that Borong died. The many who knew how close Borong was to Henry thought the great Dobe died of grief over losing his human companion.
I saw this first hand with Della after we lost Boris. As far as your comment about what emotions dogs are capable of I personally and firmly believe we underestimate what they feel and how they think greatly.
I lost Lexi suddenly on 10/7/2017, she was only 8 years old. She woke up fine, did her favorite thing ran in the back yard. On her way back up to the house she stopped half way I went to her and she collapsed in my arms. I did CPR but was not able to bring her back. We are not sure why she died, it could of been cardiac related or a stroke. She was part of the family and will be missed forever.

Interesting, My male lost his littermate sister a few years ago and I expected him to grieve or something but I didn't notice a single change. She did pass away slowly over a 6 month period so maybe he had time to get used to the idea. Also he is VERY attached to me and our kids, so maybe that bond kept him from having too much grief.I had two red dobies I got from a guy in Fl.
