A true behaviorist has a college degree. A trainer can also get a degree, but not from any college that I know of. They usually have titles and references to back up their training experience. They also usually have their own dog that is trained to give you a demo if you ask to show how experienced they are in dog training.

I would also ask them questions like "if you run into this problem with a dog you are training.....what would you do to fix it". Or even a question like "what qualifies you to be a dog trainer? Where did you acquire the information you have to train dogs?"

There is a school that trainers go to in order to get certifications. I was actually looking into it to become a dog trainer! It is just like going to college just based around your dog

I have met many more trainers that are top quality in my book that don't have any certifications under their belt than trainers that do. I find that people use the certifications to "prove" what they know about dog training. The proof, in my opinion, is in how many titles in obedience and or schutzhund the handler has on dogs, client referrals, and how he/she handles my dog in front of me on the fly. If they can't handle him/her or can't show me what they can do for me, or can't show me a dog they are working with or one of their own...I would never consider them a trainer.....no matter the certifications. Just my 2 cents.

i am not saying you have to get certified...You stated that there wasn't a place I was just saying that there is...I have been around trainers all my life so I understand your thoughts behind it. I wanted to go to the school because they have some really great classes that I could learn more with.

Just curious because eventually I would like to complete my schooling, but not what I originally enrolled for....lol

I also find it very difficult in the local training facilities to have anyone that claims to be a "certified" trainer to be well versed in the different training methods and the theories behind them. I would be very interested to know what the school you were referring to teaches and what all they cover. I might be interested in looking into this as an option some day for continued education! I doubt they do online classes, but do you know if they do?

It is called Animal behavior college. http://www.animalbehaviorcollege.com/dogtrainerprogram/?id=413 they actually do online for most of it until you have to put your dog through training with the mentor they find for you. They seem like a really legit school
