Whining is the current theme song of my life

After reading through this thread, I'm thanking God I never had a whiner. I couldn't take it.
I was concerned when we first brought Rumor home because she made some of the strangest noises I ever heard coming from a dog. She had some bizarre moves to match. Now at just over 3 years old, she is the quietest dog I have ever owned.

I remembered she was in training for service for you, but didn't know what lines she came from. I like to hear there are still some quiet ones out there!

And by all means teach "quite".

I chuckled when I read that.....both boys know quiet....but it is the command to stop barking. I swear at times Bam doesn't even know he is whining. We can come in from a walk.....he'll lay down....and...along with a lot of sighing....he's whining.

I'm experimenting as all this got me thinking and there is definitely a "barrier anxiety" involved. So we have about 7 fenced acres. I've been practicing recall off leash, so I go do a chore like sorting firewood and Asha is free to wander. She gets several hundred feet away and I call, she comes running and gets loads of treats (kibble). Today I left her inside our fence and walked out the gate closing the gate so she is not with me but can see me, just a couple of feet away and here it goes: Whine, high pitch bark, whine whine whine. The further I go the higher the pitch. She stopped for a breath (and to run down the fence line) so I started returning to the gate, she whined and so I turned and walked away again. I did this for some time, whining/yipping "drove me away" and silence got me to return. It wasn't perfect, but it was an interesting experiment. Being away from me and even out of sight was not a problem with no barrier (she wandered off, I didn't leave her), but putting a fence between us, with a clear view of me being right there was extremely stressful for her. This thought came up because I realized she never whines when loose in the house (except for when her food is being fixed). I will continue the gate exercise to see if she can learn to "call me back with silence".

It will be interesting to see what your outcome is!
Since this thread started, I have become more aware of the boys whining...LOL.

Bam got in trouble a bit ago and DH put him in "place".... he went to his place spot...dropped down...and the whine stared...and until today..I couldn't say if he has always whined when in trouble/place.

Lordy am I in for it now. I think you’ll get a good laugh out of this story:

Ravenbird mentioned barrier anxiety and I never really noticed that much because our walks used to be hell on earth and now they are quite peaceful. But holy crap the ungodly sounds coming out of this dog today when we went out as a family to walk him was something to behold! My husband was walking him as my two small kids and I walked ahead, and he sounded like he was a human man-baby yelling for us to get back (or for my husband to move quicker). This WEIRD “AHHHH-AHHH!!!!” sound. Mind you, he normally walks just fine and responds to leash pops or leash corrections fairly well, but today, he decided to scream like he was being murdered via multiple stabbing. I have the most dramatic dog on the planet. It’s official. It was even worse when applying spacial pressure. Usually walking into him on our walk gets him to focus back on us if he pulls ahead. Today, it made him yell and thrash around like a 70lb toddler having a temper tantrum. And the weather is beautiful outside so we had quite the audience of neighbors. We switched to see if it was just a reaction with one of us. Nope. Happened when he and I switched. He just didn’t like us being “too far” ahead. Walked behind him, not a peep. :wtf: This boy is going to drive me into an early grave. :weird:

Okay..maybe that's not so funny.

I'm feelin ya there.....oh boy am I!

Bam's developed a crazy rebel streak......yesterday at the dog park.......he had a fit ....that was off the charts looking like he was a rabid yodeling mad dog.

I knew he wasn't being hurt....I knew he wasn't being aggressive...the woman who walked to the fence and scolded me for bringing an aggressive, attack dog to a family dog park.....didn't know that..OY.

Hopefully the neighbors KNOW y'all and know it was all "Dobe drama queen" stuff!!!

Haha! Mine is a similar situation! And a perfect example of whining for a reason. Sometimes we have to figure out what that reason is.

Last night, about 9pm my husband, daughter, and her twins and I were all in the sunroom, gathered around the table in front of the fire enjoying the evening. We had already fed the horses and brought them into the barn. The evening was more or less over for any chores. So we were just relaxing. Buddy started out in his bed in our bedroom. When we all were seated in the sunroom, he kept walking in and out of the sunroom. Sometimes whining. One time even barking! Thinking he needed to go outside again, my husband let him out through the door in the sunroom. He came right back in! Okaaaay. I moved his bed over to my chair and told him to lay down. He did. For a short time. Then he was up again. The whole time things are going through my head. Does he have to go outside? Is his water bowl filled? Is he in pain? Is he concerned that our daughters cat was on her lap?

After realizing that every one of his needs was met, it finally occurred to me!

He wanted me to come to bed! :tap:

I told everyone, I know what his problem is. :speechless: Anyone want to wager a bet? :martini: LOL

I went into the bedroom, laid on the bed and turned on the television. Buddy grabs his blanket and went into his bed and was quiet. :wacky:

:groan:
He just didn't like that his schedule was off-kilter! On a usual day at this time, I would be laying on the bed relaxing and watching TV with him in his bed on the floor, right next to me. He just couldn't understand why I wasn't doing the 'normal' thang! SMH

He did that whenever friends were over and we were in the breakfast room playing cards! He'd come in, look at us, whine or even bark. I knew he was saying, "Hey! It's after 10pm, you should be in bed!!" I would tell him to Go to bed!~ And he finally would. :D

I dunno. I sure hope so. Because we walk the 2mile area twice a day and he doesn’t normally make a sound at all. Added the rest of the family (which we cant do more than once a week) and all hell broke loose. I woulda sworn someone was going to call us in for animal abuse given his sounds. Makes it really hard to correct behavior when his response is clearly over the top to us and not so obvious to onlookers that see us giving a tug or walking into him. I especially dont want to be a nuisance to neighbors. And he is LOOOOOOUD. The echo is impressive quite lol. Quiet command be damned. He just did not care.

Scary thought, isn't it?

I was half worried we were going to have animal control there to take Bam*shudders* Our saving grace is the fact we used park a couple of times a day for months (until Bam started coming unwound on us) and there's a fire station right there, often the guys will come out and watch us work with Bam and Mo.......so at the very least we had some kind of "wittiness" to the fact that WAS NOT normal behavior for Bam...and we weren't abusive.

Exactly...it's kind of one of those times ya gotta do what ya gotta do..for the everyone's sake and HOPE the ones who are watching the thing unfold...aren't going to over react....or maybe even have their own history with a pet ( or kid) who kinda went bonkers for a bit..and under stand the actions you have to take!!

Ah yes, that sound. I call it the torture chamber. I too am surprised no one has called the cops to investigate what goes on here, because it does sound like we must be skinning someone alive.

Can’t mess around with their blanket time! We save his blanket for when we are trying to watch TV downstairs. We were still busy after dinner cleaning up and he just stood there staring at the basement door. Then it escalated to whining, and then barking. I thought something must be wrong down there, let’s check it out. No, turns out we were just disrupting Dear Kaiser’s evening plans!

Damn, they can tell time so well!!!
Mine do the exact same thing. Bogie irritates the crap out of me when he thinks it’s time for me to go to bed. The pacing, the staring, the yips and finally the nose nudge to get me moving. They get on the bed and wait for me. After 5-10mins if I don’t come to bed, they come back out and start the routine all over again. They try to herd me into the bedroom while I get water and snacks to take to the bedroom.
They seem to be very capable of training us. Lol

Let's up the anti on this a little bit.

Anybody a got a "motor boater"?
(NO not the Wedding Crashers kind!!)

I have my feet resting on Bam's back, he snuggled up against my recliner...and it feels like I have a foot massage gadget there....that sounds like a small motor boat:

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
*shift, sigh*
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
*snort, shift*
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

He and and Mo snuggle sleep.....until Bam starts "motor boating" and then Mo goes looking for another spot.
