Welp! First day of the school year, new home, job, etc

Peace Doberman Family,

There has been a lot of positive things happening in our lives since my last post.

Firstly, we ended up in a situation where we had the opportunity to purchase a home from my dad, and rent out our last home… my dad is a disable Vietnam veteran, and he is starting to experience some early stage memory loss, it’s not severe or rapidly progressing. However, since my parents divorce over 18 years ago, my dad’s kinda been on his own being the macho man he once was. Bills were becoming overwhelming, etc. So, as a family we decided it would be best to make the purchase and assist and support dad with moving into a Senior Living apartment (it’s very nice and up to speed!). The only draw back with the move is; we no longer have the yard space we once had, my dads home (our new purchase) is a twin home/town house… we have very cool neighbors, almost every other house has a dog, people are friendly and for the most part they know or know of me given the fact my dad lived in the house for years, and I visited regularly. In addition to that, all of the children are going back to school, wife works in the school system, and I am starting a new position and will be out of the house more, so of course I’m thinking about Vito.

Vito already has a passive level of separation anxiety, he’s gotten used to being able to run around a yard, I’m thinking of adding a XL sized kennel to the back of the house, just so he feels he has his “own space” somewhere outside, I will continue with his walks and exercise as usual, and be intentional about getting him used to his new environment(s)… any tips or ideas to help along the way, I appreciate as always! I’ll post some pics of Vito over the Labor Day weekend!

Good to see you again - Vito is looking so handsome! Congrats on your new-to-you home, sounds pretty ideal for everyone involved. You don't say how long you've been there already, but I imagine Vito will acclimate just fine. Good idea about the XL kennel outside. Do you have a little bit of fenced yard for potty time and all that? It might take a while, and I can't recall how old Vito is now. I don't have any tips that come to mind right away as I've not been in this situation, but one thing I don't do is make a big to-do over leaving or coming home. In other words, when he knows you're leaving for the day, no kissy talk, "be a good boy while I'm gone" etc. Just go out the door with no glance back. (it's hard!) Same coming home, he's excited and jumping and squealing with delight, just walk past, put your things down and ignore him until he settles then a quiet pat on the head. The more excitement you involve when leaving the harder it is for him to see you go and the more excitement you give when you come home, the more he might feel like he was right to miss you. Separation Anxiety is really hard if it gets out of control and everything I've read says to make leaving and coming home as un-emotional as possible. My dog doesn't like being left alone either and gets vocal (whining/barking) but that's the extent of it. If the weather is nice I leave her outside with a beef bone, but inside she ignores any chews (raw bones aren't allowed inside for obvious reasons). So if Vito has a favorite SAFE chew that can distract him for a while, that might help.

Nice to see you again! Congrats on your new home and finding a nice place for your dad too.

I'm retired now so I don't have to go out too often but when we were working, we just made it matter of fact and they looked forward to their nap time.

Elroy has a bit of separation anxiety too but he crates fine if we want to go out for dinner or something.

Hey there! It’s good to be back. We’ve been in the new house for 7 days. Vito is 19 months old. I’d say he is adjusting fairly well. And all he does is his whining, a few moments of barking, and he goes down for a nap (big baby). We do have to go out and get a few more safe toys for him, thanks for that reminder!

Hey Jan!

Thank you, we just have to consistently work on not giving into the excitement (especially the kids), so I’ll be working with them even more on that.

Sounds like everything is falling into place nicely! Good on you for taking care of your dad. And the pictures of Vito look great! 😍
