Things That Go Bump In The Night

MLR

Novitiate
Do any of you have dobermans who are afriad of things? Hercules is afraid of water, the dark and he is espcially afraid of thunderstorms. This morning was the start of our spring rainy season and it was thundering. Hercules hit the deck looking up at the cieling all worried like we were under attack from outer space. The absolute worst for him is when we have the hot balloon festival here in July. I can't walk him anywhere near the airport which is close by. He starts shaking and barking at the balloons. He is absolutely freaked out by them. He looks up at the sky for a week or two after the festival is over before he goes outside just to make sure there are no invaders coming to get him.

We've been fortunate not to have any of our own with fear issues. I've always used thunderstorms as a time to do a little indoor obedience training to keep them distracted. Of course with a close lightning strike they would startle, but recover quickly and refocus on what we were doing.

We did however have an issue that took us a little while to figure out. Couldn't figure out why our Zeus was non-stop at the fence carrying on.
Turns out there was a plastic shopping bag hung up in the neighbor's hedges, and even the slightest breeze would rustle it. So he probably thought something was hiding in the hedge. One good gust of wind pushed the bag out of the hedge towards him, and you'd swear there was an 8' grizzly bear on his tail.........he ran, barking over his shoulder at it ....it was hilarious!

Ginger isn't scared of anything....lol
Daphne is scared of loud noises; thunder, loud truck or car, fireworks.
Int he spring and summer if I hear thunder in the distance or know we are Going to get a storm I have to give her some Benadryl BEFORE she starts panicking or its down hill. One day I was gone and a storm hit and when I got back home she had wedged herself under my bed wayyyyy back in the corner. The poor girl was still trembling......I felt so bad. So now when I know it's going to storm I don't leave the house or I take her with me.

The shopping bag bear is too funny Panama. It remminded me of one time when I had both dobes in the car and a shopping bag was blowing along in the wind in front of us. Chloe went into defence mode on the spot. I thought she was going to jump out of the window and go after it until we finally got past it. I guess she though it was going to attack us if she didn't stop it.

All my girls were afraid of storms. I thought Logan was not, but he is!!! We had 2 thunder storms so far today and both times he made a b line for his house!!! We took the top of his crate off and put the bottom in our walk in closet.....he now thinks he has his own room and loves it.....

My little 10lb poodle Muffit was not afraid of anything...One day I walked in the kitchen and here is Muffit hanging outta my Dobie Brittney's mouth....I'm thinking OMG then I notice.....Muffit has Brittney by the mouth... Brittney had tried to eat her spagetti and that was one thing she learned real fast not to touch!!!!

Oh my, Dobiegirl. I don't know what I would have done if I had walked in on something like that. Good thing you know your dogs. lol. That's pretty funny though that the little one isn't afraid of the big one.

Neither of my dobes are scared of storms but Max the BC sure is... He gets so scared that we have to clean up after him... No lie... He is one of the smartest dogs I know, and potty trained since we got him at 8 weeks... he only had 2 accidents in the house his whole life... including potty training...
But as soon as he smells that storm comin its over... He shivers, whines, and hides at my feet...
Romeo and Jewel look at him like he's nuts... but as soon as New Years eve or fourth of july come... I have 3 dogs acting like chicken s****!

Both of mine are afraid of heliocopters; I forgot that one. We live close to the airport, like I said, and in the summer time both dobes will run for the house when a heliocopter flys over the house when they're outside. Oh, and if the power goes out Hercules sticks to me like glue with a real worried look on his face, even if I light oil lamps.

Our Sheltie is scared to death of thunder storms too and I'm afraid she's going to get Boris started on it too since she always runs to him (her mortal enemy) for comfort when it's storming. So far Boris hasn't picked it up, but I always wonder if that stress could rub off from one dog to another. Our GSP was terrified of storms too, but as he aged it almost completely went away. Maybe that was because his hearing was going in his golden years too though...

Speaking of helicopters, they just set up a new LifeFlight base at our airport a few months ago. We're only a couple miles from the airport so they fly directly over our house in route to Duluth and it's so loud that it scares the heck out of Boris. I can only imagine what it's going to be like in the summer when our windows are open...
Last night we were sound asleep in bed (Boris in between us) and the copter came over at about 2 am. Wow, Boris was all over it and growling/barking so loud we all spent a little time getting back to sleep after that one. At least I told the Hubby that if anyone ever tried to enter our room uninvited at night I don't think they'd go far after hearing the roars out of Boris. :)

haha this is great.
My big bad boy Phoenix is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, he will jump over couches and other things to get awayfrom it. But other than that nothing

ANd Penny and Orion are not afraid of anything really, Orion doesn't do new people so much til he gets to know you but he is not afraid just abit skittish. :D

That's so funnly about the vacuum cleaner apbtmom76. Same here. All I have to do to get them out of my hair when I'm out in the kitchen is grab the dust buster and turn it on and my two great big ferocious dobermans run for the other end of the house and stay there until I turn it off. What wusses.

LOL! That's funny apbtmom! I used to have one dog that did that too. I think it was either the Boxer or the Dalmatian, or maybe both....

Boris goes in his crate when we vacuum, and just watches passively.

For those of us who can't view videos, is she stalking and attacking the vacuum cleaner apbtmom76? Because that's what it looks like. lol

both MLR. SHe will stalk it then bite it and try to "kill" it. ANd Orion is pretty much Minkey see Monkey do. lol

I wish my guys were afraid of the dark! They all could be passed out under the blankets all around me... then the stupid neighbor dogs will bark in the right 'alert' pitch and my blanket flies out the room! Anytime of the night.

And I am fortunate now not to have any dogs that are afraid of thunder or fireworks, my GSDs were. And as for planes, Karma is hilarious, she notices everything and is aware of everything. She is the only one at the dog park i ever see that watches the planes... and even in the car she will watch birds flying above.

Her biggest issues are vacuums and that vicious ironing board!

I laughed so hard I almost spit my pop out picturing you being startled awake and you covers flying out the door hrd2gt. :D

Ernie is pretty much fearless - other dogs growl - my boy throws down and literally launches at them. Which wasn't so wonderful when he was 12 weeks old and Chipper was the adult. Hasn't phased him though... so, here is the short list: The chain saw... and once in the 4 wheeler - a rock hit the bottom and banged really loud - that sudden loud noise scared him from going down that path for a while. That's it. Not the vacumn, not the car, not other people - nothing. We did fireworks, nothing. Thunder - nothing. Really loud wind blowing - nope. I would have thought the bang would have scared him of guns...nope.
It's been the one thing I have loved about him from day one - nerves of steel - it's how he got the name Ernee - "Iron"....
We got the oil changed today - hubby got out of the car - mechanic slipped in and sat down. Ernie stuck his nose in the guys ear - the guy hit his head on the side of the car getting back out...lmao

LOL MLR, thats how it is too... its like they all jump up at the same time... and fly off the bed and the blanket goes with them!! sheesh...
