The Dreaded Question "Why have you not neutered or spayed"?

I get asked this question at least once a week.

I get it all the time. Some were convinced I was breeding them and called me all kinds of names. I actually had a group of stalkers that were determined to take my poor over bred dogs away from. One in particular went as far as getting physical to take them. She ended up with an assault charge and banned from Petco. :)
I have learned to just say something anal. Like explaining I do my research and read tons of articles from top vets. I like to keep on top of dogs care. Helps keep me from looking like an idiot when I open my mouth. You should try it. ;)

I agree keeping up on dog's care is important and I am pretty well adept at this as I read all the literature our vet gets and discuss it with him at length on a weekly basis, along with working with our patients each day. As far as not looking like an idiot when I speak, hmmmm....I measure my words carefully before I speak and adjust them accordingly to whomever I am speaking with so that even the idiots can understand my point.
Whether they accept it or not is subject for debate given the oft time inability to accept current or new studies regarding animal care and health.
Perhaps my reply to this question should be: How does removing my dog's testicles benefit you?
Unlike what you have described, I have never had anyone actually get in my face and threaten to remove my dogs from me. That would be a very tragic and sad day should someone ever attempt to pull that type of maneuver with me. Being in business I have dealt with a lot of idiots but that type of idiot would only be that stupid once.
Perhaps the adult thing to do is to not respond or engage their ignorance at all because I really don't give two sh*ts about their opinion.

Read through all of this since I'm starting to get these questions from people since Odin is nearly 7 months now. I took him to the vet a few days ago to get his heartworm prevention and the vet mentioned a vasectomy for him if I didn't want to neuter him (which I won't decide on till he's around 2 years old). Does anyone have any insight to this? First time hearing about a vasectomy for dogs.

Interesting... I guess, in theory, you could do this at a younger age since he won't be losing his hormones. Did they say if the recovery time or invasiveness is any different than a normal neuter?

It's actually a less painful and less invasive surgical procedure than a standard neuter.

Just makes me realize that we have a much more accepting community around here. Yes it's pretty standard thought around here for the neuter/spay question to prevent breeding, but that's also because so many are dodos. Those are the "I don't know how she got pregnant, it was accident." Now THOSE I wanna smackeroonie. Ya kidding? Them babies didn't just hop up from the ground. lol

Honestly if I had a male Dobe, I may not neuter either depending on circumstances, but were I confronted with any question I'd just politely say I have no intention to and calmly explain why. Some can't help the attitude. If they continue giving attitude, I'd simply say that it was my dog, my responsibility, but assure them I'd been raising dogs all my life and knew what I was doing. Silence is a great weapon. And the calm look into their eyes. Those latter two things are powerful.

I had my pit Odyssey spayed young at five months old before I knew the benefits of keeping them intact, I believed I was being a responsible owner. I can't say I necessarily regret the decision as she has been very healthy in the following nine years, but I have opted to keep Brinks intact. I have no real reason not to. I have no intact females and he is never let loose or come into contact with other strange dogs. I figure he was born that way, it's not hurting anything... why bother!

Wow that is an Awesome Vet for bringing that option up!
Yes I would wait until 2yrs
Yes they have those for males and a Modified Spay for females.
The whole idea which they get to keep these hormones! Taking away these hormones can cause Endocrine issues down the road. Yes studies say taking away these hormones can prevent some cancers. But also taking away these hormones can increase the chances of getting the more aggressive cancers.

Vet asks whenever we go in, for anything, but I say I'm waiting for him to mature, and they seem really happy with my decision. I think they ask because they want $$$ to be honest.

As for you bri, be like, it's better for them physiologically speaking, to remain intact and I do a lot of training so haven't had a single issue with temperament. But thanks for asking. Then walk away.

I can't recall having the question asked. However, I did have a lady at a dog show tell me that Mack missed a jump because he is intact. It was many years ago and still annoys me. lol He was very young and it was only his 2nd show jumping in the ring. He had ticked a jump last time and was a little nervous about jumping again. He is an incredibly focused, obedient dog. Really can't see how he could be more so without being a robot. lol! We showed twice that day, the next time he jumped got a perfect 100 and beat her dog! lol! So glad that happened as she kinda had to eat her words when she realized who beat her. lol!

What, like his testicles were so big they weighed him down? :lmao:

If you want to be polite just tell them they are show dogs and can't be altered to compete in the show ring.
Ruger is only 4 months so nobody has asked yet. But now I'll be ready with a response: "Because he's rather fond of his balls."
