Soon to be new Doberman Owner :)

Also arranged for delivery of Eden dog food. Decided to go with that as the reviews where very good

I’m happy to hear that! :)

I feed the original cuisine but there’s others available. I do add a little warm water to the kibble to soften it slightly.

My girl gets excited every single day for her Eden. I do take out one spoonful though and add fresh to mix it up. Either asparagus for probiotics, sardines for Omega oils or blueberries for antioxidants.

Learning so much on this Forum.

Tell you a quick funny story.

Had Mother's Day at my house and I grilled hamburgers and BBQ chicken. Ragnar was the highlight, everybody was taken aback on how fast and how big he had grown.

Ragnar impressed many of wife’s family members because the last time they saw him, he was somewhat unrefined with his obedience. He is so much better and obedient now and yes....I showed him off.

I overheard the table conversation of, “man, how does Don know so much about Dobermans???” My wife and I looked at each other and at the same time said- “Doberman-chat.com”. My wife said it calmly and I gave the ole Tiger Woods arm pump as I said it!!!!

I am not as educated as a lot of the other members but I am much smarter on Dobermans now than 8months ago.

People look at me funny when I explain that I joined an online forum for Dobermans. The response is usually, "just be careful, there are some weirdos out there" or, "there's a forum for dogs?" - I never tell anyone that I also joined a cat forum

So its the 2nd day and the first night was the most nerve wrecking.
It wasn't so bad. I tired Bella out, took her outside, she did her potty and then I put her in her bed in the pen. She slept for a few hours and then whinned. Let her out, she wanted to wee. and then back into her bed.

She remained asleep until 6am where we got up, played, pottyed and then she went to sleep again.

From first impressions she is very clever, stuborn and knows how to get her way :) Shes not fearful but anxious on first encounters with anything but then after seems fine. If she is not sure she comes running to me.

Last night and tonight I'm sleeping downstairs on the sofa so at least she can see me. I think from tomorrow I will go back upstairs.

What I like is she sometimes gets a crazy urge to want to cuddle. Like wants to get on my lap to lick/kiss my neck and head and put her head under my chin while really playful.

She will be 11 weeks this Sunday and weights about 9.4kg about 20lb.

I leave food out for her all day and remove it around 8pm. This was my understanding with puppies.

When do I put her on a schedule? My old Dog (at Rainbow bridge) we fed 2 times a day. 1 in the morning at 7am and the other at 5pm.

b.t.w Have also ordered Eden and once that arrives will swap foods over gradually by replacing 10% with Eden and continue through 10 days when it will be 100% Eden.

Finally she loves to eat anything in the garden. This includes bringing in stones! twigs, grass and flowers. Is this normal for a puppy?

thank you all

In puppyhood, it may be okay and I am getting kinda ticky here but.....be aware that you should not go to crate just because she whines. If you do this then every time she wants out, she will whine and it will become problematic.

Yes, if she has been in the crate for a while and you suspect she needs to potty then let her out for sure.... you don’t want to start a cycle of her pottying in crate just because you don’t want to react to her whining.

I did go to the crate when Ragnar whined but I was absolutely sure to the bathroom it was. After he went, I put him back into crate and let him out on my initiation not him whining to get out.

Now, at 8months, if he has been in the crate for a while napping, he will whine a little bit to tell me he is ready to get out. I hear him but I will purposefully wait until he is quiet and then go let him out on my terms.

Sounds kinda harsh and controlling but he hardly whines for anything now.

Just to let you know, I slept on the couch for two weeks when I crate trained Ragnar. The family was unsure of a new Doberman puppy in the house, so I kept the late night noise to a minimum.

They shouldn't free feed. To set up your alpha status, they have to learn that they rely on you for their food/survival so make them work for it by asking them to do something before eating. Actually before giving them anything. You can put them on a schedule right away, though puppies are best fed 3-4 times a day. A lot of ppl say Dobes do better with a routine, but this will also depend on your lifestyle. I am not much for routine but my hb kinda is, so Kaiser goes with the flow fairly easily.

Just like a human baby, they will put everything in their mouths that they shouldn't! You have to monitor that very closely. You don't want to blockage! Nor do you want them to get used to eating rocks. It can get into a habit that is hard to break.

I also agree with @Kaiser2016 about feeding free.

She’s gorgeous! You must be over the moon :)

I would set a feeding schedule. I’ve never left food out all day for a dog. Because her tummy is so tiny you can feed her 3-4 small meals a day (preferably at the same time each day)
Weigh out the food. I also feed Eden and trust me when you weigh it out it really doesn’t look much at all (quantity) but it’s a good quality food and the quantity will definitely look less, but that’s fine.

Below is a guide for Eden...

Remember to increase the food portions in accordance with her current weight. Once she is settled on Eden, keep an eye on her weight to determine whether the suggested feeding amounts are right for her.

Thank you all for the advice.

Viemarangelrock: so if Bella about 10kg I feed her 115grams for the day divided by 4.
So approx 31 grams each.

I also have to introduce Eden with current Ian's right? Not straight swap.

So far sooo good :)
Shes very loving and loves to be hugged and then showers u with kisses(little nips not pressured on neck and ears). Then curls up to snuggle and falls asleep.

Must say Eden quantity amount is alot less than what Ian's say to give a day.
450g v 150g

80% meat/fish 20% fruit and veg and NO grains or cereals.

As a result the quantity that needs to be fed is often less than half of the quantity of other dried dog kibbles making daily feeding costs much lower than they first appear.

Yes, mix it in with the Iams and gradually increase the amount of Eden over the next week.

I actually feed Tara, my girl who’s 66llbs 10% more than the ‘recommended.’ Just keep an eye on her weigh and increase if you feel fit.

Remember, most dog food labels contain cereals and fillers. Why? They add ingredients to help your dog feel full, but provide little nutritional value and usually these products are cheap and easy for manufacturers. In fact, some common fillers in commercial dog foods are so cheap, they will irritate your dog causing allergies or sensitivities.
