Snow hike

Vader has worn booties before, and removed them every time. I only have 2 left! He seems happier without them. He's only been cold a few times, usually when we are going slow and stopping to chat. He feet never seem to bother him.
Yes we have to cinch them down pretty tight on the ankles or they will lose them in the snow. Our rule of thumb for boots is 0 or below and they go on, otherwise they can't keep their feet on the ground long enough to do their business. Lately if it's -5 or so and they're just going for a quick potty we don't put them on.

It looks like it could be saprophytic fungi growing up the side of the tree in bracts.
I love all of the moss and fungi out in the woods - in fact I've collected some and made terrariums with it. So far so good. We have a few trees with the entire trunk covered too and it's very cool.

Agree, it's so cool. A lot of fungi are symbiotic in nature and give nutrients to the tree like the mychorrizhal fungi.
I like the ones growing on the dead host trees. I have gotten some Spanish moss growing on my Japanese Fern trees. I picked it up from the trees, mostly Live Oak trees around Ocala, Fl.

Yes Mushers Secret is a very popular paw protector. I actually need to order some since Albert's paw pads are getting torn up with the rough snow.
Thanks! Nero didn't like the boots the first time we tried them on but since we live in the suburbs, I want to protect his feet against the salt and ice so we can still go for walks with less worry.

They put salt down so thick here in Cincinnati that you sometimes hear Oji's paws scrunch through it. I do wipe the paws with a wet towel to help keep any hope alive of our floors surviving.

Same here, even though we are on top of one of the largest supplies of free sand in the nation.......Stupid Michigan.

In Alaska all the roads were covered in gravel. Free, and doesn't destroy your car.

Same here with the thick salt on the roads. The county gets their allotment according to how much they used the prior year so toward the end of winter they're dumping it on dry roads to make sure they get what they need for the next year. You would think it would be on an "as needed basis instead. Of course that would make more sense so it's not going to happen. LOL

Living out here we don't have to worry about salt where the dogs go but if we do have to use some sort of ice melt it's the pet safe stuff.
