Slightly morbid but necessary question, update and cute picks!

Vinnie's Mom

Hi all, seems like forever since I had the time, energy and internet connection to post. Well, since last post I was able to secure a new van and camper that is travel worthy so our grand adventure is planned for 3 weeks! We have all been busy figuring out how to survive together in a 17 foot camper with me, Vinnie and the cat. And no, the dog loves the cat but the cat hates the dog, I mean that would be too easy right? Well, we all have out "spots" that are just for us now and it is working out pretty good since we spend the majority of our day outside anyway. The upcoming trip brought up a question for me however. I am alone. I have no family, other than the fur babies. I also have health issues. This was the main spark of this adventure to begin with. So I was thinking one day as I passed a pretty bad accident on the mountain we currently live on, what would happen to Vinnie if something happened to me. Well, I ran into a fellow Dobie guy, one of the few besides me in the area who has a Dobe mix that plays with Vinnie at day care. The two dogs love each other like brothers. He agreed to take care of him if the situation was needed. The question now is is there a dog will? As I will be traveling all over the country, I would like to have documentation to this but could not find anything on a cursory search. Do any of you guys have something like this?.....ok, that was the question, now the update. He has been on the new food for a few months now and not going swimming in the pool at daycare and all the tummy issues are all gone! Whew! He is growing up so fast! I am really so proud of him! Don’t get me wrong, at 14 mo he is still a giant asshat. But training with the flirt pole and collar has gone fantastic! We still bark at bikes but it is down to a bark. Not 10 minutes of complete chaos. I listened to you all when you said one day it would get better if I did not give up. Thank you all so much! Part of me did not believe you but I took it on faith and he is soooo much better each and every day! There was a Halloween picture event at daycare that proceeds went to charity so….here is my Halloween sweetie! He really is a total ham!

Not a morbid question at all!

Our dogs would most likely go to my Mom or returned to their breeders while they find suitable homes for them but it's not specifically written anywhere, no, which it should be. Is he micro chipped and does that information reside with a vet clinic? Do you have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact in your cell phone and/or wallet?

Even if you have your own will, he could be added to that. Heck, divorce courts are starting to write dog visitation rights in their contracts!

He is chipped and the vet here has the info but I don't have anyone to list for an emergency contact. Thats why I was hoping to find some sort of document for Vinnie.

Great to get an update! Was wondering how things were going and glad you are starting your adventure soon! Glad you brought up the subject of having a "dog care" plan in case of emergency as I also travel solo a lot and should look into plans as well. Just in case!

Vinnie looks really good and settling down at 14months is a good sign. I'm willing to bet that when you start traveling you find he matures very quickly. They do love plenty of new experiences and learn to rely on you much more! Happy travels!

He is so cute!! I love the markings on his face... he has the full tan around his eyes... it’s really pretty... or handsome I guess I should say!! What a good sport! Thanks for sharing!!

I'm glad things are going so well!

I've honestly thought about the fact that we need to get something on paper in case something happens too so our animals go to appropriate people, rather than to a shelter or into the wrong hands. Probably even something like a medical card with contact info for who you want to be in charge would be a good start. You can put it into your will as well but that can turn into a long time in court too.
This is a boring read but it shows some of the stuff involved.

Do any of you guys have something like this?

It is in our will where Rumor goes if something should happen to us. We also have provisions for her care so no one is taking on a financial burden. Hubby added up annual expenses (food, insurance, medical care etc.) and came up with a formula to figure out a fair inflation rate and her average life span. That figure will go to the person that takes her when we pass.

That's exactly what my Aunt did. She never married, had no children and had a cat that she loved. We talked about it one day and she told me that she made provisions in her will. I said you can't give your cat to just anyone! :nono: They might just take him for the money! I told her that I would make sure her cat was well cared for! When she passed unexpectedly, I was not in a position to take the cat, so my mother did! Next best thing, in my opinion! ;) She had him until he died and gave him a great home. I even babysat at times. :purps: Keeping him in the family was what I thought best!

Having a plan like that in place is imperative IMO. Good for you to be thinking about it!
