Skynyrd at vet getting stitches

Thank you for saying this. Im in tears and my family is like he will be fine. I feel like Im doing him wrong by not doing anything but I know that that is not necessarily true. I appreciate your words of encouragement

I feel your pain. I really do. It's scary and it hurts to see them in pain. But you're doing everything right. As long as it's clean and you sprayed it with the antiseptic and wrap it, keeping it clean is the best thing for him. For me the hardest part is cleaning it. It's hard for me first, because it gets me queasy LOL second, because I feel like I'm hurting them. I don't know if you remember that horrible injury over my horses eye? I called the vet out on a Saturday. Yeah emergency call and on an off-day. I think it cost me two hundred bucks just for him to come out but it was so worth it LOL I told him I don't think I would have ever been able to clean it like he did.

You didn't notice anything foreign in the wound when you were cleaning it, did you?

How much Benedryl would I give him? He weighs 90#? Can I give Benedryl since I already gave him some Meloxicam?

I didn't notice anything obvious but is was pretty deep so kinda hard to tell. I tried to clean it really good before I wrapped it.
Im with ya on the eye injury! Eyes gross me out! Lol

I would wait for a couple hours after your first dose of Metacam. If you have enough metacam (Meloxicam) just dose him again with that.
Benadryl is 1mg per pound.
If he is that tender with his leg I would be concerned that he may have injured one of the bones around his elbow, the ulna, radius and humorous. There is the coronoid process where the ulna forms the joint and it has 2 bony protrusions. It’s possible he may have injured those.
He will definitely need an X-ray to rule out any fractures.

If he is still uncomfortable with his leg, I would get him to a vet as soon as you can though.

Maybe he is just sleeping it off...can you check his temperature? If your whole family comes to a consensus that he’s ok - other than not walking - you could be ok to wait. Is there no 24 pet hospital nearby? Maybe call your regular vet on their emergency line to see what that message says?

How is Skynard today? I was thinking about him all last night and concerned about a bone being scraped or chipped.
Hope you can get him seen quickly as they will need to anesthetize him to examine and do radiographs.

So I took him to the ER vet at 4am. The puncture is very deep, down to the tendons and ligaments the vet said. The actual laceration is not that big. They flushed it out and cleaned it really good. She said she didnt want to stitch it closed bc of how deep the puncture is. She wants to leave it open to drain so an abcess doesnt develop. She said not to wrap it or put anything over it. She said do warm compresses like twice a day. She said she didnt think x rays were needed. She we could do them but that she was confident he did not need them done. Here is the list of the medications she put him on.

Im supposed to go to my normal vet in 3-5 days to see how he is doing and if we need to switch antibiotics. If he is still limping then we can do x rays

I asked her why he was limping so bad and she said that dogs have different tolerances for pain. She did say that he was limping more then she would have expected. I think she was basically saying he was a drama king! Lol

Well he has my sympathies. If I had a puncture down that deep I'd be limping too!

We decided to take him at 4 bc we figured nobody would be there at that time and he wouldnt have to wait on the floor for hours. He definitely was better this morning but still limping really bad. I knew I wouldn't feel ok until I had him checked. The one pain medication makes him sleepy so that is good. He's been sleeping all morning.

I don't know what was in it but it was like a miracle. She went from acting like her back was broken, all scrunched up, to actually walking normal!

Yes I was shocked. I had to carry her down the stairs to go potty in the morning and then carry her back up. I gave her the pill and left her inside while I went out to the horse barn. My husband petted her and she yelped. By the time I got back from feeding the horses she was out of her bed waiting by the door for me! Like an hour later! I carried her down the stairs and we went for a short walk and she did really well. So maybe she was being a drama queen LOL

I was tempted to take one of those pills myself! LOL

Glad to hear the vet was optimistic about it healing on its own. That’s a great sign! A Doberman being dramatic
