Skin bumps on 11week old puppy

Hi I just picked up my first doberman last week. She was 10 weeks old when I got her and the breeder told me she had cradle cap which is the bumps all over her neck and spread on her body. And that it should clear up on its own. The next day I took her to the vet to have her checked out making sure shes all good. The vet said it was fine just to give her a bath and really scrub her down with a mild puppy shampoo every 3 days till it goes away. So I gave her 1 and it did seem to help alot. But she still has the same thing on her neck head and chest again and small spots of it on the rest of her. It doesn't make her itch and everything I've read says your not supposed to give dobermans baths that often. Not sure if anyone has any other ideas or has dealt with this issue. Side not her ears are posted and I just change her posts on bath day.

I'm no expert, but it could be food allergy, not skin related. In other words, bath & skin treatment won't matter if it's what she's eating. Is this a blue or red? Seems like anything other than black has a higher rate of skin problems. Sorry, I have no answers, just these thoughts.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll get more input on this from others.

She's a really dark red more brown than anything. I'll have to check that out. I didn't think about her food. She goes back to the vet next week, so hopefully they will know or do more than say give her a bath.
Thanks it seems to be a very helpful and informative place for doberman owners and I know I'll need that!

WELCOME FROM THE UK, I hope you find the answer to your little girls skin problem soon,
:ntmy:

That does seem like a lot of bathing. Did they give a medicated shampoo? Sometimes those things work, other times they seem to create a new problem. For such a young pup, I'd focus more on food and environmental to keep her immune system strong and healthy. What about scented products on her bedding? That can irritate their skin like it does with humans who have those sensitivities.

The same thing is happening to my red dobie too! Did you figure it out? I’m trying to find a solution.

I've been battling this issue with my black and tan dobie since 2019. I got her in August and by October she had the same bumps/rash. It usually lasts from March til November. I've feed freeze dried raw, Darwin's, Ollie's, Victor and Biljac (picky eater) please don't hate on me....the original breeder suggested biljac and she has been on this for months with and without the rash. I really think its the environmental exposure and the heat (I live is SC). Scratching and licking just got extreme, so vet gave a steroid injection, next step is allergy testing. Benadryl 75mg BID was no help

This was helpful, I also think it has to environmental. I just feel so bad for my pup, I really wish I knew what the cause of his allergies were.

This is when my girl was 4.5-5 months old. It starts as small bumps on her chest, progresss to inner legs then outter hips, shoulders and elbows and of course hair loss where the bumps are located.

I literally just went through this! I hope this helps, but my girl had bumps like that, started at head neck, and moved downwards slowly! We went back and forth because one of the spots got infected and so it was all overlooked as to what the main cause is! So in short: we found out it was mites!!! There’s so so many different types of mites, and swabs can miss it (as it did for us the first time) so my suggestion go to the vet and tell him you are concerned it might be mites, have him swab many areas not just 3/4 or to skip and give you meds (we had 3 pills, one each 2weeks). It could be any type but I suggest if you’re feeding dry food, it could be food mites, and a reaction to them (our initial mite) switch to a brand that specializes in avoiding mites, they’re not dangerous however some dogs have an allergic reaction. It can also be any kind of skin or grass mite (I’m translating from German ) and shampoo with anti mite shampoo, wash EVERYTHING with mite killing laundry detergent on as high of temperature as the fabrics allow, anything that can be washed, freeze it for 48h if you can, the rest spray down surfaces, couch etc with mite killing spray (in Germany pet stores sell all of this But im sure Amazon will have it) don’t forget the car too 🙈 I forgot it the first time around. I also suggest „insect bombs“ for mites, for the house, and by mite killer/ prevent for the yard and spay yard too, make sure It’s all save for pets. Treat all pets with the shampoo and spot on that also kills them, and I added a mite killing collar to have a constant and less harmful for skin „killer“ and to keep my oldest from getting them. Some mites will also live and bite humans so be careful. Best check your heads if you see reddish bumps as well. (We’re not a host and they will die off, but they can infect us as well by accident) make sure you keep spraying everything and washing as much as you possibly can. The best way to view this is to think of it like live or fleas. Many doctors actually don’t know too much of mites, which is why ours was missed , and only through luck of having switched vets did he discover it! I’m of course no doctor but if they don’t really have a clue, the bumps look exactly like what we had. Our mite thing started with food mites..it got better then the same thing again..but different. Turns out they started living on her and the thought was 2 mite types. One reaction to food mites (which will not live on skin and hence swab will not pick it up) the second a type of dermatox mite, we didn’t swab and just went by vets suggestion to save money as her suggestion was to skip the test, the treatment is THE SAME for all mites. So regardless of her just reacting to food mites or having a other type you’ll want to change a brand that pays attention to it. (We feed a German brand now called wolfsblut) and clean everything for a little while. I hope I could help ❤️
