Rock eating dobie owners???

So duke upchucked a rock about the size of a half dollar today. I noticed yesterday afternoon he had thrown up basically his food but I had just gotten him a new bag so I was thinking it was the food( couldn’t understand why as it’s his normal food, just my first thought anyway) so I didn’t give him anymore of it and later comes diarrhea only one accident still in my mind thinking the food didn’t agree with him for whatever reason until today when he throws up this rock. He acts normal no change in behavior but I’m wondering if a vet trip is in need, I’d just hate to not go and ended up with a huge issue later on. I’ve seen mention of others, whose dobies have eaten rocks but unable to find a thread.

Eating rocks as a young'in is common in dogs ... I've had a few that did it...and it easy to break the habit with a good scary NO every time they approach any...as far as the VET goes if he throw it up I'd say you're ok, if the eating and "business" start up as usual...if not you need and x-ray. Hope he's ok.

There is something about rocks that they like especially at a young age. Like they're swallowing it to taste what it is because it's available in such abundance. Gotta break that habit ASAP. Reach in to remove the item if he's too fast. But it's better to prevent that behavior so they don't help themselves to unknown objects on the ground.

Usually if I catch him I make him drop it or go in and get it if he just flat refuses to cause he’s forever trying to eat stuff, I’m assuming he ate the rock during his yard time (our fence wraps around the front and back) as that’s the only time he’s out alone, I guess he won’t be getting anymore unsupervised yard time. He had to dig it up we don’t have gravel or rocks in the flower beds or anything. Our yard is always maintained in the fall and aerated and fertilized before spring so the yards almost a golf course in the summer, so there aren’t many if any rocks in the yard. But duke can go back out around the burn pile in the far back of the yard also where the fence meets the neighbors. And I’m almost willing to bet that’s where I’ll find a nice new whole in my yard :banghead:

The breeder and hubby weren’t on the same page with the whole letting her go deal. So I made the choice easier on them and decided to wait on a pup. Double edge sword as I got amped up about getting her And I for sure would love to avoid the puppy stages but I don’t wanna be in the middle of thier marital affairs over Zoe.

We had a planter with rocks in it and our girl would take them and carry them around lol. Never caught her chewing or anything, just walked around with it and would leave it somewhere for me to find. She did that around 4 months old, doesn't do it anymore.

@Tropicalbri's you've dealt with this, right?
Unfortunately yes I have. I will try and dig up the X-rays that showed the rocks in his stomach. They were just a tad smaller than a golf ball.

I still have to watch Bogie like a hawk because he will get the small pearock and swallow it. I am constantly telling him to drop it. He started when he was 3 1/2 to 4 mo old. I removed all the river rock from the yard so he would not swallow it anymore.
He doesn’t do it if we are somewhere other than at home.
I try to keep them busy all the time when outdoors so he doesn’t have time to grab a rock.
I put a basket muzzle on him when outside and that prevented him from grabbing the larger rocks but he figured out how to get the small rocks with the muzzle on.:pullhair:
If you see them swallow a rock get the h2o2 out and dose them so they will throw it up.

It’s a major worry for me because at almost 2yrs. old he still tries to eat them.
Biggest thing is to train them to drop on command.

That one rock is huge. Is it in his stomach?

Are those his intestines full of poop?
Rock is in his stomach. Gave h2o2 and he finally got it up. Poop in his stomach is canned cat food and kibble. He managed to get the cats food and you can see the crushed bones in intestines from the cat food.
