Puppy food transition - fresh start

Hi everyone,

So my new Fawn Doberman is 7 weeks old and the breeder was feeding Eukanuba small breed puppy food. I’d like to transition him towards a better option, would someone suggest going cold turkey and giving him the new food, or should I transition slowly?

The options I’ve been looking at (for now) are nature’s logic, the honest kitchen, or PPP. Eventually I’d like to do raw feed, but I’m still doing a bit more research on this topic. Greatly appreciate any input, thank you!

Slow transition to an all life stage food.
A quick transition usually will produce diarrhea.

I give Tyson raw but I mix it with Honest kitchen fruit and vegetable base mix. I like the product. As for diarrhea, I give Tyson a tablespoon of organic 100 % pumpkin puree once a day

Do you mean Purina Pro Plan by PPP? I personally don't care for that one, even though it's a tiny bit better than the other Purina foods that are not good.

I agree that a good ALS food is they best choice and as stated, it's better to do it gradually. When we got Phoebe late this summer I got a 20# bag of what the breeder had her on and transitioned from that to her current food.

I picked up the Eukanuba small puppy food, and will shoot for a month or two to switch over to raw or at the very least an all life stage 4-5 star kibble, but ideally raw.

Any suggestions on whether or not I can add other food options to his current Eukanuba? Ie; sardines, sweet potato, carrots, kelp powder, blackberries, blueberries, asparagus? Should I transition this slowly? Thanks again!

Great tip on the pumpkin purée, thank you. I haven’t seen any runny poop, but it does stink horribly, haha! I’m sure the Eukanuba isn’t great for him.

Be sure to get a fecal done on the puppy.
With really stinky poop and gas in puppies it is usually related to intestinal parasites. Coccidia and Giardia are the biggest culprit in stinky poop.

Always a good idea to get fecal's done on puppies.

We have fecals done on our adult dogs 2x's a year.

I feed raw 9-10 months out of the year. Then feed Natures Logic for December and January. I don’t do a transition and have never had any GI upset issues with natures logic.

So I took him to the vet today and they discovered hookworms, so they put him on Panacur for 3 days, and Albon for diarrhea for 5 days. They also gave him a Convenia injection for little bumps he has on his skin, and what seems to be a ringworm. I'll probably start a new thread on here for this later on if it doesn't go away. Either way, thanks again for the info!

Ok that's good they found the worms.

One thing i would add is a good probiotic to help get good bacteria back into the gut. Because of the meds for the worms and the antibiotic. 80% of the immune system (just like humans) is located in the Gut. Especially when antibiotics (since they also kill good bacteria and upset the micobiome in the gut) are prescribed you need to replace this gut bacteria.
We use Answers Goats Milk everyday when we feed Raw. If there is a local small good pet shop near you.

Good afternoon StykerDobe, Thank you for the info! I am going to look for this goat's milk today, we just got back from the vet and he no longer has the hookworms, now that the antibiotics worked. I'll follow up with you via private message to talk about the food options. Much appreciated!
