Potty training question

hi all. Mowgli has been living with us for three weeks now (he is 12 weeks old today) and has been an absolute angel, even with the cats. One of my cats has sort of adopted him and goes everywhere with him. He listens well and from day one hasn’t really had an accident in the house .. we weren’t allowing him into our bedroom because that is the cats’ “room” and we thought they’d be the most comfortable with a space away from him.

He discovered a week ago that he is still small enough to fit through the cat door on the pet gate that blocks the bedroom, and so we started slowly letting him in for a few minutes when we had to go in there and even had him up on the bed for about an hour the other night while watching tv. Randomly he has decided that the bedroom is a second bathroom for him. He hasn’t peed or pooped anywhere else in the house and always goes outside but if I am not paying attention to him for a few minutes he will sneak through the cat door and poop.

Just this morning I brought him in and had him on the bed as I was folding laundry because I figured if I’m watching him he won’t go. He squatted and started to pee right in front me!! I just yelled HEY and grabbed him mid pee and we went outside and he finished..

It has happened 4 or 5 times in the past week and I’m kind of at a loss on how to stop him. When we are out in the living room he will start whining to let me know he needs to go out and pee or poop which is why I’m so confused!! Any input is greatly appreciated.

He's most likely doing it in your bedroom because of the cats access and him not being able to get in there (until now). It sounds like you're doing things right and persistence will pay off.

My guy is 2 and we're still working on him being gentle with the cat

Regarding the potty, it's a new space so maybe introduce him on leash and immediately go outside to pee. Make sure he hasn't had water just before going in to your room. Consistency is key. Also, be sure you've eliminated old potty scents by using enzyme cleaner or vinegar. If he can smell his old spots, he'll keep getting triggered by them.

Was thinking about the exact thing late last night.

New place and consistency. Ragnar did the same thing in our bedroom because it kinda has a frieze (shag) carpet. You have to start over with your mentality of he is not potty trained and watch him like a hawk. Everytime you even think he is prepping to go, take him outside.

One time we were laying in bed watching tv and wife says- is it raining? Sure does sound like it?? We look over the bed and Ragnar is peeing up a small puddle. I started laughing-the wife went crazy.

Time, patience and consistency- you need a lot of this with these guys.

We used puppy training pads combined with a pee post (fake hydrant) placed on top. And every day we moved the pad a couple of feet closer to the door. Then we moved them outside. And then further and further back into the yard. Then we removed the pad and even though he wasn't lifting his leg yet, used the post as a visual marker for where his "spot" was. And then when he started lifting his leg he started peeing on the actual post. This article is a good reference if anyone's intersted: A Dog Fire Hydrant Potty Is Your Lawn’s Best Friend I think there are sprays you can buy to get your pooch to want to pee on the post or in specific spots but we didn't end up needing it.

crate training! They really dont have control of their bladder till their 5 or 6 months old. Sounds like your puppy is exceptional if at 12 weeks old you have let him run free mostly without problems. Rule of thumb is the number of months is the number of hours they can go without going potty. A 2 month old pup needs to go every 2 hours for example.

Luckily my wife's office isn't far from the house so we were able to let him out every four hours at most, morning, lunch time, after work, evening and right before bed.

Crate train and always take the dog outside to potty. There can be a designated spot if you want but always outside and always reward for going outside. Dogs do not no right from wrong they only understand pictures and routines. Potty pads give them the picture that going inside is the right thing. It will cause more training in the long run and to me is not fair to the dog. Just teach it outside from the beginning.
