New rescue dobe

Well we've officially named him Toby. This poor guy has obviously had some kind of terrible life. I got him to let me get a good look in his mouth today and his incisors are worn down to nearly the gum line. My best guess would be from chewing on his chain or rocks or something. :(

Toby let us dremmel his nails today. He was a good boy. We did Twilight's first while he watched so that may have helped. He's getting more comfortable. Yesterday he needed moral support to go down the deck stairs to the backyard but today he's doing it by himself. He walked beautifully beside Twilight on our morning walk and has eagerly eaten his breakfast and dinner today. He's even holding his head a little higher and wiggling his butt a bit when we come home!20180925_220326.webp 20180925_112237.webp

We had a wonderful breakthrough this morning. Toby and Twilight played together in the backyard. Twilight is much faster and has tons more stamina, but Toby has some get up and go for short periods. They would chase around the yard and play together for a couple minutes then Toby would run for "base" under the kids playset for a breather. Then they'd be back at it. They finally both came back in the house and collapsed :)

Such a sweet boy and I'm so glad he's settling into his new forever home so well! I agree that they all turn grey at different ages but Della started showing some grey under her chin when she was about 7 or 8 and her litter mate had a grey muzzle a couple years before that. Della is 9.5 now and she's showing a lot more grey on her muzzle in the last year.

Oh my where to begin, I took toby for a check up on Monday. The vet confirmed that he is at least 7. He has some gingivitis and arthritis. He also had a double ear infection and whip worms but was otherwise healthy. We got some ear medicine and a joint supplement for him. Then on Tuesday night he started randomly yelping. I couldn't figure out why. It continued throughout yesterday. So, I texted his vet last might who recommended that I bring him back in for an exam. It turns out that he has a slipped disc in his neck. He is still at the vet getting a cold laser treatment to help with inflammation and he'll be coming home this afternoon with muscle relaxers, antiinflamitory meds and pain medication. He'll need to be kept on low activity for a month and switch to elevated feeding dishes. After he's allowed to leash walk again he's supposed to use a harness. I guess God gave me this broken dobe because he knew I'd fix him and love him :)

Just catching up on this thread.
Bless his heart. He must of been in a whole world of pain. You’re his saviour!!

My husband recently purchased new raised bowls in this wood frame. I believe he got it from EBay. A lot sturdier than some that you see on the market.

Toby is doing great! His neck is better but he's still stiff in the joints, but age does that I guess. Twilight gets along with him great but she really wants him to play way more than he's interested in doing. I have to separate them sometimes because she just won't leave him alone. Toby loves his new people especially the kids. He's a snuggler and wants to touch you at all times. He is a true velcro dobe. He follows me everywhere. Twilight is about to start her second heat and I think he can smell it because he won't keep his nose out of her hind end! 20190201_151523.webp 20190128_201914.webp
