New Doberman Owner

:dc: From Sarah in the United Kingdom.

Yes, I agree. Crate from the very first night. The crate imitates a den and will teach pup that's a safe place for him. Yes, you'll probably have a few restless nights but it's worth the wait, trust me. He'll soon settle as the days pass.
I would also recommend putting him in the crate (short periods) whilst you are at home. Go about your daily routine, hopefully he should settle nicely the more you do it. You want it to be a positive experience for him, so no time-outs or punishment in his crate. That'll cause a negative feeling with the crate.

As for up on the furniture. My previous boy lounged quite happy on the chair or sofa. My current boy doesn't go up on the furniture. It's just a personal preference.
Kobi has a hammock style/raised bed which he loves. Yes, he did try to jump on the sofa but with a quick "ah,ah!" he has learnt that the furniture is a no go.
What I will say is, if you do decide that it is ok for him to join you on the sofa, it's important that YOU are the one that sets the rules and YOU are the one to invite him up.
You want him off the sofa? You must teach him the "off" command. Be firm but fair with him. Don't confuse him with lots of words, keep it simple..."Up" "Off" "Down." He may try to test you from time to time but stay calm and make sure he carries out your desired action.

I always say, "start as you mean to go on!" Puppyhood is just the perfect start for you both.

I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing pics of your boy!

Oh. Doberteens is totally legit. Lol. I think most dominant/working types go through it honestly. Both my husky and pit did the same crap. But after the doberteens pass, they are the most amazing dogs as long as you keep them in check. My pit was so stupidly loyal that after he matured, he wouldn't even accept treats from strangers, no matter what they were. Poor checkout people at pet stores thought he was broken.

And just a couple years ago a young girl a town over was murdered on a popular biking/walking trail. Not particularly common this far out of the city, but it still happens and seems to be more prevalent than ever.
Still trying to figure out where your at. lol You definitely DON'T live in Detroit if your a night walker! lol So I guess you meant metro Detroit. ;) edit: No I'm not a weirdo stalker...just a stay at home mom. :thumbsup2:

It's easier to just say Detroit since everyone knows where it is lol. Currently, I'm in Richmond (but before that Taylor and Detroit) and Ive always been a night walker, even in the city. But I'm probably crazy :)

Hi from a fellow nightwalker. :D I'm a guy though so it's a lot safer for me. We live in a "safe" part of Cincinnati, but right on a route where all sorts drive through.

Hey, the Dobermann was designed to protect its owner on night walks, right?

Indeed they were! And I'm more often than not armed as well. But I'm nocturnal. Or a vampire. Whichever. I despise walking during the day, too much commotion, too many people, too much traffic. I intentionally walk the least lit areas, away from the main road. Maybe I just have a death wish ;) but I've NEVER been disrupted while walking Kaizer. Even when he was "tiny" I'd walk by the one bar that happens to be on an otherwise quiet side street and no one would approach me and once you round the corner after the bar it's pitch black, very few houses and one side is rail road tracks/vacant property, kinda eerie back there, but I like it. I also walk the cemetery at nigh though lol.

Hi from a fellow nightwalker.
I don't know if you would classify me as a night walker but I get up around 3:30-4am every morning and the first thing I do is throw on some clothes and walk the dogs. It is dark, peaceful and eerily quiet. My flashlight has a taser on the end of it and I carry my S&W 380 as well. Seldom do I see anyone else.

I really should carry too. I'm not a big guy, and I'm middle-aged. Then again, I can see if a cop ever interviewed me out there at night they'd run me through the ringer if I had a weapon.

Personally I'd rather give someone my wallet than be forced to shoot them. Now if I were female then I'd certainly be more worried about sexual assault. My view would be that a potential attacker would pick someone who isn't walking a Doberman or two. So anything else is really just for peace of mind.

That happened in my neighborhood right on one of my walking routes – a few punk gantsta' wannabes who drove up in a car pulled a gun and got a guy's wallet. Fortunately, that seems to be an uncommon thing in this area of town but it proves it can easily happen. I guess it would weigh on me some, but I really don't think I'd feel bad about killing someone who pulled a gun on me.

It would also send the right message to violent criminals.

I'm on the south side of middle aged....that's why I figure most people would think twice before approaching me with a Doberman or two at my side let alone a taser and 380. But I am realistic that I am a lot more fragile than I was 6yrs ago and I need equalizers. Lol

Really though, I always think that if someone wanted to rob me, they would not be too deterred by my Dobe except for the noise of barking. They could just stand out of leash range and point the gun at me and demand I place my valuables on the ground.

Yeah, I know it's :sign1: :D

Oops, guess I am the thread crapper. Sorry I was drifting. Hahaha

OMG!!...Don't apologize!!...'Tis the way of a forum...I just HAD to make the joke, because...well...I just HAD to!
I've jacked threads so many times it's ridiculous! Please don't think I was even stating an opinion...sometimes I just think I'm funny...sometimes I am actually funny! I never know until I try!

Yeah, I've never gotten bothered much by things going OT. In this case, we're not talking about like baking cupcakes or something. We're talking about personal security.

Lol. I'm horrible at staying on topic sometimes. Blame my add ;)

I would most definitely shoot anyone who threatened me in any way with a weapon. No hesitation. But I think you have to be familiar with Detroit area crime to get that reasoning. They kill people for no reason. They kill people who cooperate. There are SO many women missing its mind blowing. Detroit area is a really a major human trafficking hub. I'm also 5'3, 105 pounds soaking wet, look young and am not nearly as agile or strong as I used to be, so I like to know I have equalizers as well.

As for cops - some will give you a hard time no matter what. Others could really care less. But as long as you're doing things the legal way, you shouldn't have much to worry about. I suggest becoming VERY well versed in your states carry laws if you want to carry. For instance, in MI, I can't carry a taser unless I have my CPL. But I CAN carry a gun, openly, without a CPL. Weird, right?

And dobes really are crime deterrents. Friend of mine was nearly jumped years ago while walking his dobe. He had him on a long lead and the dog had actually already turned the corner, so the would be muggers didn't know he was there. As soon as they started approaching my friend, the dog must have sensed it or something and came tearing around the corner going absolutely ballistic (non security trained dog, mind you). They took off running. He's positive that dog saved his butt that night. And he's NOT a small guy.

When I lived in the city, before I got dogs, I used to get approached a lot. It became unsettling since I lived in a high crime area. After dogs? As long as I had one with me, they left me alone. I don't get it, but people are really afraid of huskies as well. But in all fairness, my boy was super sweet, but I don't doubt he would have turned cujo if need be. Now, the girl who was killed a town over while walking her dog, she had I believe she had a border collie, who apparently ran off when the girl was attacked. So just having any dog is not a deterrent.
