New Dobe mama

I have a 12 week old girl. I also own a Shorkie,Winston. He’s 2.
Xena came to me on pro plan puppy. He was not runny but soft. Winston on 4health, salmon and potato and he does great.
Xena loves it and it fixed her poop right away.
From my understanding from what I have read on here, it is OK to feed her adult food? Which would be great so everybody could eat the same thing.
I know it has 25% protein. She weighs 25 pounds.

I even tried putting in a little of the pro plan in with the 4health since they sent me a bag of it and I was going to use that up but even a tiny bit in her stool back soft so I know that is what it is.

So is it OK to leave her on the salmon and potatoes since she is doing so well on it?

Hello! And wellcome to the forum!

Imo, if she's doing great on that kibble, then I wouldn't keep on trying to feed her pro plan, as it doesn't seem to sit well with her.

Adult kibble is fine for dobie puppies, and 25% of protein is also good. I'm not a huge fan of potatoes, lentils, and legumes in general; as they've been linked to taurine deficiency which could contribute to DCM.
That being said, if the potatoes % is very low, I would still keep feeding her that!.

Draco (my dobermann) is fed a fish-only kibble, because he's intolerant to pretty much everything else, and he gets runny poos lol.

Curious to know brand/flavor of PPP and what the protein % is? I would like to compare fat and caloric values to determine if maybe the catalyst for runny poo. It has been a subject on here that too many calories in a daily feeding will cause runny poo.

I’ve seen as low as 24% to high of 35% protein with kibble. I generally like between 26-28% but that’s me. I say if he is good to go with the 4Health Salmon and it pleases the entire household then stay with it. It can be so difficult to find the right food or isolate the issues of a Dobermans sensitive stomach. What I may do though…is to add an egg, or yogurt from time to time. The growing process and demands for a puppy’s development is more than an adult. Research that some and learn about it, you can figure that out and be confident of staying on 4Health.

Good luck.

Welcome!

Would a Shiorkie be a Shi tzu (forgot how to spell that) and a Yorke cross/?

Draco Dobie's advice above seems good. I think that many, if not most, kibble dog foods today are considered "All Life Stages". This, in contrast to the trend some years ago of having puppy formulas.

I agree, keep doing what is working for her. Suggestion of an egg or yogurt is a nice one too.

For taurine, if that is any concern for you, the stuff can be bought dirt cheap on Amazon if you wanted to supplement. I use it and buy something like 250 1000mg capsules for I think $13 ish dollars.

Welcome from Minnesota and congrats on your new pup!

Many of us feed "all life stages" so yes, adult food is fine as long as it isn't too high protein. If she's doing well on the 4Health, I'd keep feeding it. PPP isn't a great food so you can do better.

We'd love to see some photos of your dogs.

I give her some plain yogurt with her food like once a day. Sometimes a little can food mixed in with food.(one or the other at one time)

I do not know the percentage of potatoes?

Lordy your dogs are adorable! I hope you will continue to share their story here! I am interested in how they get along/grow together.

Well a research comparison shows that the soft poop is not a calorie issue- unless you are feeding different amounts.
PPP- 387 Kcal/cup
4Health- 397 Kcal/cup

So I am thinking it may be a chicken allergy since the 4Health main ingredient is fish.

Regardless, glad you figured it out.

Well, right now, she is absolutely torturing him and his tail!!! it does not matter what I do with her and try to get her to stop. She will not and I am afraid she is going to traumatize Winston.! he is such a good dog and is very calm and does not bother anything or anybody and definitely is not used to this! I plan on putting her in puppy classes next month starting the 13th and hope I can get some help with it because she grabs his tail every second that she is around him and pulls out mouthful of fur!

So should I not worry about the potatoes and just keep them on it?

Yes, Winston is a Shih Tzu and Yorkie

You are in charge, you can indeed stop her. Puppies have to learn that they are not allowed to disrupt other pets. I had a puppy act like this and I simply put a leash on her and kept her out of reach of the other dog. Always always take up for and protect the pet that is getting unfair treatment, no matter which one it is. Every moment is a learning experience for your new pup and if she learns that you "can't stop her", she will continue that behavior.
