My boy had a seizure...

I want to preface this by stating this is meant as a documentation of my experience (and my best friend's) incase he has another one, and to assist others who may have similar circumstances. I will update after his medical consultation.

Sunday Feb 20, I was having an afternoon nap with Benson who was across my legs as usual. I woke up around 3pm to my boy having a seizure. Not sure if it started exactly when I woke, or if I woke up because it was happening... Either way, I was frantic.

Without really getting into the horrific images that are permanently burned into my brain now, the just of it is... Neck contorted sideways, choking/coughing, eyes rolled 1/2 way back, legs frozen straight out, shaking violently. Lasted 90 seconds I'm guessing, give or take 30 seconds.

When he started coming out of it, he was super disoriented. He started barking & growling at me, even bared his teeth when I got real close. I gave him space, and he tried to jump down off the bed but his back legs still weren't working. He hit the floor like a deer on ice, pissed & discharged scent gland, and eventually scrambled out of the bedroom after almost biting me when I tried to assist him.

Once he made it to the livingroom onto his bed, he turned and "stood his ground" - barking aggressively and looking sideways at me. It was disheartening, to say the least. But I gave him his space while I tried to phone a vet. That's another story in itself, but I digress. I had also phoned my mother, who lives 300 yards down the street, to come help me.

By the time she arrived, he had "snapped out of it" for the most part but I was still in full panic-mode and he was definitely shaken up. It took him ~60 minutes to come back to his usual demeanor, after comforting and coaxing him to drink. I'm still not back to "normal", if there is such a thing.

At the moment, I haven't taken him to the vet but we are going tomorrow. I just need to find a competent vet who won't take me to the cleaners looking for "possible" medical explanations. And after reading the multiple threads, both here & "another board", I have an idea of where the vet should start looking.

Benson's "profile" - DOB = 09/20/2018 , INTACT, vaccinated up to 2yrs (nothing since), he's approx. 80 lbs but I feel he should be ~10 lbs heavier (he looks thin to me), he's always ate the same kibble/food (I picked it based on the "all meat-products" content) but in the last ~6mos we started feeding him a new (Purina) treat. And yes, his kibble is ACANA CLASSIC RED. Admittedly, I haven't exercised him as much as he needs in the last 6mos. I've had my own medical issue to deal with also.

One other concern is the fact he's had 3 ticks pulled of him last summer, 2 of which were attached. He was not on flea/tick meds, as they were never an issue before. But last spring, we moved across country to an area (unknowingly) infested with ticks. I had never seen one before in my life, I'm close to 50 y/o.

I've been watching him fairly closely for the last 2 days, he seems 95% but there's definitely something different about him. Sometimes now he just stares blankly at me, which both concerns me & breaks my heart because it reminds me of the seizure. He's also been rather "humpy" with me, something he does now & then when we play in the house for extended periods or play more "aggressively".

Please be gentle on me if you feel I've done my best friend a disservice by not having him vaccinated/etc, or that we haven't gone to the vet clinic yet... Thank you.

I can't imagine how scary that was for you :( Hopefully the vet is helpful as I know how frustrating it can be when something is wrong but they dilly dally. Keep us posted on how his vet visit goes! I'm sure more folks will chime in!

Welcome, and sorry this happened. That does sound quite scary and very unpleasant!

I don't have much knowledge about medical issues.

As for the bugs, in my opinion, last summer was bad on bugs! Of course, in this region, we had the cicada invasion that happens like every 17 years; but I definitely noticed several other kinds of bugs were more prevalent. As embarrassing as it sounds, my kids got some chigger bites from either being in the woods or just on grass (I heard they dwell in tall grass). As for dog parasites: I had the first experience in my life with fleas this past summer! Ticks, I have had on my Dobes, but never fleas thank God. Well, that changed.

Well, I don't know if the seizure could be related to the ticks, or not at all. Some here have experience with Lyme disease, which can be tick-bourne but I don't know if that can cause seizures.

At any rate, I do hope a vet will be experienced and get right to the issue for you.

Sending you good wishes!

How scary and I hope you can find a vet who can give you answers.

Don't ever feel bad about that I know a lot of Doberman owners who don't vaccinate after the initial puppy shots and do a titers instead.

We have a ton of ticks here and our boy Albert did have a tick borne disease but thankfully it didn't cause any seizures.

What a scary experience, but you shouldn't take it personal. I think giving him space was the right thing to do so he could collect himself. All the information in your post will be good to relay to the vet too. Jan is right - we only titer test after all the puppy shots were done. That said, if you do live in a tick heavy area now, I'd look into what your options are for protection. Those are great pics of your boy!

Agree. Ours get a Lyme vaccine annually and they're on Nexgard chewables for all of the other tick borne diseases these days.

For sure a full Blood and chemistry work up, also a Full Panel Thyroid Panel (NOT just a T4) which could cause aggression mood swings, seizures, possibility of epilepsy. Other thing it would be an MRI is a possibility of a brain tumor. Maybe a trip to see a Neurologist.

One thing we did for our boy who had a brain tumor. When he would start to have a seizure is to put a towel over his eyes.
We also documented when he had them, how long it was what time it was, what he was doing just before the seizure and what his body was doing during the seizure.

Not going to tell you you're doing a disservice for not vaccinating. We do not over vaccinate! We do not do any 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9way combo wombo vaccines. A Rabies Vaccine should NOT be given with any other vaccine. Same with a Lepto Vaccine. After puppy Core vaccines Parvo/Distemper/Adeno we don't vaccinate any more. We Titer every 3yrs.

Please keep us posted.

Never ever purchase any cheap Flea and Tick CRAP in pet stores!

Just for info from our FDA

Your boy is beautiful....wonderful typical face in that second photo!!! So sorry you are going through this. Sounds as though you did the best you could in the situation....I hate to hear that he seems "different"....I have not dealt with "seizures" per say; but have dealt with Sudden Rage Syndrome, which is another type of seizure. Please let us know what you find out.

My last dog, Alex, was one of the greatest companions I have ever had. A yellow lab that lived ~12yrs… Not obedience trained like my two asshats now, he was a happy go lucky fellow that just liked to be my buddy.

He started having seizures on and off for as long as I can remember. Seizures such as falling over with legs going into full extension while his body and neck bent into flexion- moderately shaking, losing bladder control, frothing at the mouth.

I witnessed this many times, happened prob 3-4 times a year. I would sit down close to him and calmly talk to him letting him know I was there. I am at your side, everything will be alright.

Lasted prob 2-5mins which felt as 30mins. He would come out of it glossy eyed, and stumble/fall as he tried to get up. I would try to cue him to stay down so he could get all of his wits together. Finally he would get up and go straight to the water bowl and drink.

Took him to a trusted vet. Vet did test, looked him over and said he looked fine. He could prescribe meds but that may make him drowsy and change his demeanor a little. I chose not to do meds and just to keep an eye on him.

O’ boy lived a long wonderful life and passed in my arms.

The one thing I did learn is that an animals internal temperature gets very hot during a seizure and there is a risk of too long/too hot, it could cause damage to the brain. So a cooling off towel around the neck to cool off the neck arteries/veins in and out of the brain is a good idea. Just make sure it is not restricting.

I'll start this thread-revival by apologizing for not coming back to update y'all... The seizures never subsided, only got more frequent.

After the 3rd vet visit, he was "diagnosed" with epilepsy. Prescribed something that didn't seem to work, changed to a different med that seemed to help. Initially.

We dealt with the ~monthly seizures, sometimes he wouldn't have one for ~2 months. Up until ~6 months ago... Then it was back to at least 1 every 4 weeks, some months he'd have 3. Occasionally two within 24 hrs. But we "managed" it with Levetiracetam, 1200mg a day.

Then a couple months ago, late October, I noticed he was breathing unusually heavy after minimal exercise. This progressively got worse as the weeks went by, to the point where ~4 weeks ago he was constantly taking short/labored breaths. It was so bad he couldn't/wouldn't lay down on his side, and if he did he would have raspy/phlegmy breathing then get up & start coughing. Two vet visits later, he now has DCM...

Vetmedin & a diuretic to help the heart & decrease fluid build-up in his lungs, respectively. These also helped, initially... Some days he was ~75% back to normal, but now the medication isn't enough. He's constantly pacing, whining, extremely labored breathing, and barely lays down. It's so bad he stands in one spot with his head down or swaying, with his eyes half-closed for minutes on end.

Well, tonight was the night I had to make the hardest decision of my life. My best friend of 6 years and 20 days is gone... He was my life, just about everything I did revolved around him. It feels surreal him not nudging my leg for attention, or bringing me a random toy to play with him as I sit at the computer typing this. :( I feel lost.

Sounds like an easy choice, whether to continue to let my dog suffer from a lack of oxygen and decreased blood-flow or end his suffering... But I hesitated twice in the waiting room. I felt his heart slowly stop beating after I gave the nod to the doctor and she started the injection process...

His mate that I got for him last year is already searching for him, even though she was present when he took his last breath at the vet. Another Doberman lost to DCM...

Goodbye "Bub". I love you.

My heart goes out to you... such an emotional roller coaster to go through... i give you credit for the strength and love you gave him.. so very sad..

I'm so very sorry for your loss and that is the very hardest decision we have to make but when the quality of life isn't there anymore, it's the most responsible choice. :sorrow:

So sorry you are going through this. DCM is the name of the breed. Wishing you peace and healing now Benson is at rest.

It is a good thing that you thought of his quality of life and not your emotional needs. That sounds harsh..not meant to but its meaning is very true. So very very hard to make that decision and watch them slip away. It absolutely crushes you to the core, not another feeling in the world.

Not gonna lie…it’s gonna hurt and will be grief for some time. Take in your other and love and play with her deeply. I really hope you are able to peace and solace.

Btw…there’s nothing wrong with talking to Benson, he is there- you will be able to feel him sometimes.
